Prove that linux isn't an endless wasteland of knock-off software. A perpetual amalgam of copycats. A never-ending abyss of imitation.
They wouldn't have to copy them if they did it right in the first place. Seriously it's not that hard to make something multi-platform.

Cadence is run on linux. Pretty much the best circuit simulation software available.

explain domain names to me
what is the incentive for a site to add to the front of the domain rather than just after with a /
like sometimes their "store" page will be store.website.com
rather than website.com/store
to me as a user i always thought the / route was better cause you can usually remember it and style it specifically
like ESPN usually has espn.com/sportnamehere/pagehere so if you're looking for standings or todays scores you could easily type it and navigate there
ping website.com
ping store.website.com
notice anything?
>>58964059
so its entirely just to have different servers for each webpage?
>>58964059
But, subdomains are usually hosted on the same server...

No.
The days of stuffing your computer with all sorts of shit is generally over.
>>58963897
this is mostly true. exceptions include audio or video editing with dedicated (internal) sound hardware, SLI rigs, large water cooling loops, or some ancient build with a ton of mechanical hard drives (maybe internal RAID)
otherwise there isn't much in there that's going to fill up a bunch of space

Commercial desktop software is always a lot better than FLOSS stuff.
Photoshop > GIMP
Sublime > vim
Sketch > inkscape
Dash > manpages
etc
If good software is free, it's usually because it's developed by a large corporate and releasing it for free is in their better interests. I.E Xcode is free and (mostly) good so that devs are attracted to iOS. VirtualBox is free so that people are attracted to the Oracle virtualisation ecosystem. Jetbrains provided Android Studio, a variant of IDEA, for free so that people would realise how much better it is than Eclipse and consider other jetbrains products in future. Chrome is free to encourage people into the google ecosystem, collect demographics data, etc. Linux, GNU tools, LLVM etc are free-as-in-freedom but they are also very useful for commercial entities for reasons other than direct sale, so they attract real paid work by commercial entities.
Truly free software, where there is no commercial incentive for anyone to improve it, is generally trash. This includes basically any GUI-based desktop software.
The reason is simple: Good desktop software requires a huge amount of effort to produce an excellent user interface, focus test it, refine, polish, and update it. It's unsexy work, and any programmer would prefer to move on to something more interesting. So the only reason to make a good UI is if it will sell copies. For FOSS, no-one wastes their time. It's better to just put some slapdash gtk+ buttons together and call it a day.
There's nothing wrong with that, but please stop claiming that LibreOffice can somehow replace MS Office, or that Linux Mint Whatever Edition could be a substitute for OSX, or that GIMP could be used instead of Photoshop. It's just silly.
So, what desktop software do you use in your workflow? Have you ever taken a look at the FLOSS alternatives? Is there any way that good free desktop software could be made?
amen Richard
> Photoshop > GIMP
thats true but probably mostly because of how bad their user interaction design is
> Sublime > vim
uh how about you compare it to notepad++? or vscode? there is no reason to use sublime anymore and i bought it :(
desu i never used it much, the theme is shitty. The only good thing about it, is that it's fast.
But not even well designed, if I accidentally open a 400mb .exe file with it, it will choke on it.
rest i dont know, but the main advantage of open source is that in general there are bigger communities for open source software projects, more tutorials, more help, more forums...
for example I think blender is good enough for 99% of the people who want to make 3d models
>>58962904
I don't want this to be another text editor flamewar but
>how about you compare it to notepad++
N++ is okay but it can only be extended with binary C++ plugins. Sublime can be scripted in Python and there's a huge ecosystem of packages. You can integrate Clang for semantic C&C++ completion, for instance.
>vscode
It's another webapp in a webkit shell... no interest in that. Sublime is native code.
>the theme is shitty
I use the light theme
>bigger communities for open source software projects, more tutorials, more help, more forums
Not really. Google "maya forum" vs "blender forum", check the number of results.
>blender is good enough for 99% of the people who want to make 3d models
Blender has a pretty nasty interface. I tried it before when I was making a 3D game and needed some basic models, it was a fucking nightmare. I ended up using a trial of Modo, which was a ton better. I didn't buy it but if I were serious about 3D it would be well worth it compared to using blender.
