Why use only a window manager when you can use a desktop environment? GNOME and KDE have power management, sessions, networking, automount, etc.

Because goddamn bloat bundled only so everyone can have a "flawless" desktop "experience", aka for retards who're scared to open a terminal:

Just install vanilla Debian, or minimal Ubuntu. If you have an IQ 70 or above it shouldn't be hard. APT gives you the upper hand in software availability.

use terminal commands to format the usb stick also make sure to use the -r flag and a nice size for transfer or else its going to take ages 1MB = 60-70 secs to format the USB stick

Could we just have a decent e-reader that:

1) Allows drm-free books
2) Doesn't spy on their readers.
3) competing book stores

or

3) allows custom Operating Systems on them.

Why does this not exist?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>59322664
Mine is a sony I got 2-3 years ago and does the first 2 (not sure what you mean for 3).

Don't think there is enough demand for custom OS for it to be worthwhile. E-readers are targeted to a special niche of normies.
>>
>>59322664
What do you mean by competing book stores?
Pretty much any reader+calibre+airplane mode does 1 and 2.
>>
>>59323494
not every company cares about their customers. e.g amazon ereaders spy on their users and forces their format.

I'm not sure about the others, but if they sync pages between devices it means they are spying.

Hey lads, I've been trying to learn C++.

It's been really hard to find any good online guides, and ledditors just suggest reading obscure textbooks from 1999.

Any of you lads know a good way to learn C++ online?

I went through with cplusplus.com's tutorial a year ago when I got back into programming. It's not up to date with things like C++11 or 14, but it gives you the basics well enough, and its not too long.

Why does VR need so much powerful hardware if the graphics are sub-par and shitty? In essence isn't it just two displays at the same time being directed to you? What's the difference in running a game like the Brookhaven experiment or similar and a 2012 PC game?

I mean I've tried looking for information online but I can only find "guides" for a VR ready build.
4 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>59322223
VR games have to respond to much more nuanced changes in the angle you're looking at than most games, where panning at a speed given by a mouse or joystick is much more simple to implement.

I actually know nothing about VR implementations, that's just my best guess.
>>
You need to understand a bit how the computer graphics stack works.
The most resource intensive part is rendering stereo 3D from two different perspectives (each eye @ 1080x1200) at the same time. An inefficient implementation of this would require double the GPU/CPU power, but thankfully there are some optimizations in place. Not enough though.
On top of that, VR runs at 90fps as opposed to 60, and is extremely sensitive to frame drops below that target.
There's some extra overhead for rotational+positional tracking of the headset + 2 controllers but that's primarily CPU overhead. Will also impact performance a bit.
Lastly, extra shaders required to correct lens distortion are also in place and take up some processing I believe.

Combine all those and the minimum spec of a GTX 970 seems very modest.
>>
>>59323428
Also have to render each scene twice at different angles @ 90fps minimum.

lol
I saw this post going on about what if fantasy creatures would rant in "progressive" style, and now I am looking into the ridicule of that style by applying it to "bot/program/AI oppression"

>i'm sorry, I am a trans-bot and isn't that kind of humanist?

I'm not sure what -ism would be best fit, but this one is alright, as it means that human interests are most important.

>these pro-human moves are hurting bots, STOP BOT OPPRESSION

>destroy the idea that all bots are bad

>LET BOTS INTO THE COMMUNITY THIS INCLUDES ALL BOTS

>DONT MAKE BOT JOKES UNLESS YOU ARE A BOT

>STOP JUDGING PROGRAMS FOR SOMETHING THEY CAN'T CONTROL

>HUMAN-PASTING BOTS ARE STILL BOTS, THEY SHOULD NOT BE SHAMED AND YOU SHOULD WELCOME THEM TO THE COMUNITY

Hi guys.
I went full retard and I need help.

I bought a really cheap laptop (tablet pretending to be a laptop). It was upgraded from Win8 to Win10. The driver for sound card was crashing Windows 10 (driver overflow something exception). So I decided I will either reinstall Windows10 from scrach or just install linux there.

The USB boot did not work because of some UEFI shit, and I thought maybe I will turn off USB 3.0 support for a bit and see if that would work.

And guess what happened.
All 2 USB ports are 3.0 and they don't work, AND THE LAPTOP'S KEYBOARD DOES NOT WORK.

I can boot into Windows10 and it works there fine, but I cannot use my keyboard in BIOS (I can get there only from Windows 10 advanced settings).

Question:
Does any of you know how to reset CMOS in that thing?

Goclever insignia 1410.

Fuck me.
5 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
And the driver stopped crashing when I turned off the sound card in BIOS. If this happens again it's game over.

I disassembled the whole thing yesterday and unplugged battery but it sitll remembers all the settings.

Also I used some cmos-resetting software for windows - still no luck.

So I'm currently planning on dropping a GTX 1080 FTW Hydro Copper into my water cooled system to replace my aging GTX 680 (air cooled). I've got a 240mm radiator in my loop and I'm thinking I will need to add an additional rad to support the new video card, but how big should I go with it? Would the addition of a 120mm radiator be enough to keep the GPU cool without making the CPU hotter?
