https://www.engadget.com/2017/03/15/chrome-57-throttle-background-tabs/
>If you use Chrome as a primary browser, you'll know that it can be a resource hog that eats up too much battery. The browser's latest version was designed to solve that issue by throttling background tabs using excessive power. According to the Chromium blog, background tabs are responsible for one-third of Chrome's power usage on computers, so keeping them in check will minimize the browser's impact.
>Chrome's Page visibility API checks tabs after 10 seconds in the background. The new feature will leave tabs playing audio or maintaining WebSockets or WebRTC connections alone, since the API considers them to be in the foreground. However, it minimizes all the tabs the API considers to be in the background unless it's absolutely necessary to run them at full capacity.
>The Chrome team says this new mechanism can lead to 25 percent fewer busy background tabs. Since their goal is fully suspend those tabs, though, their work is far from done. Chrome 57 has been out for a few days now. You can download it anytime, especially if you're always on the go and would like to limit Chrome's impact on your laptop.

> websites will play "silent audio" to keep working
So my computer died on me early this year...
GPU got fried and now I'm left with an ancient relic from 2009. A pre-built ancient relic from 2009.
It was at this point that I decided to build a computer for the first time, learning what parts to look for, what's "hip" on the market nowadays, etc.
However, I didn't want to simply throw this one away, as I've seen people on Youtube take old computers and then revive them to fit in with the current year.
The only problem is, I simply don't know enough to know what parts of my computer are salvageable and which parts I should simply replace. It's even harder because, being the fact this computer is so old, there's hardly any websites that suggest what's upgrade-able and what's not.
Here's what its got:
>HP Pavilion Elite e9120y
>CPU: 2.6GHz AMD Phenom II X4 910
>Memory: 8GB 1,066MHz DDR3 SDRAM
>Graphics: 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4350 (R.I.P.)
>Hard drives: 1TB 7,200rpm
>Networking: 10/100 Ethernet; 802.11 b/g/n/ wireless
>Optical drive: Blu-ray drive; dual-layer DVD burner
>Operating system: Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 (64-bit)
So is it worth saving, or should I just scrap it and start from scratch? Thank you ahead of time for taking the time to read this. And sorry for the long post, I have problems with quantity and tend to overwrite a lot.
>Why the fuck are you posting here and not on sites like Reddit?
Because I'll take being called a "faggot" here any day over dealing with the hot, political mess that Reddit's going through at the moment.

Computer is pic related.
Replace video card with Rx 460
Add 128/256gb ssd
Add another 1/2gbof ram
Think that would be ok for lower end games and shitposting.
>>59418649
Sorry forget the ram
Looks good.
Hey /g/. I'm that anon, if you remember, who was freaking out about my last interview yesterday. Well I just got word today I've been accepted for this summer as a swe intern in Menlo Park! I don't have much to say just had to tell someone!
I guess AMA if you would like?
>>59418313
What's your internship specifically?
>>59418354
Haven't been put on a team or project yet. But as a software engineer intern I'll be writing code and have access to their entire codebase.

spinrite is the best hdd recovery tool on the market and if you dont have 90$ to spend, you can always torrent it
usage is simple
1. burn the spinrite iso onto a cd
2. boot into it
3. select either recovery or maintenance
3. let it run to completion
there is lots of documentation online if want to know more about it

>Data provided by the Department of Homeland Security shows that searches of cellphones by border agents has exploded, growing fivefold in just one year, from fewer than 5,000 in 2015 to nearly 25,000 in 2016.
>According to DHS officials, 2017 will be a blockbuster year. Five-thousand devices were searched in February alone, more than in all of 2015.
>Within seconds, he was surrounded: one man held his legs, another squeezed his throat from behind. A third reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone. McCormick watched her boyfriend's face turn red as the officer's chokehold tightened.
