senpai I just bought an old LGA775 based computer I will turn into a home server
what OS should I use? I run Xubuntu on my thinkpads and it probably works for this as well, but is there some distro that works better for home server use? I know Debian is more stable but my intention is to just have a torrent client run on the computer 24/7. so it's more like a network storage system. I could do more with it but with a core 2 duo 6750 there's not really much more it can handle

What does /g/ think of software patents and how can they be fixed? Unlike copyright law that was made with the basic intent that you cannot make money off a product or work you did not create like a book, patents always seem to be used for more sinister purposes like hold back any competition or innovation.

Don't believe what the marketing people say. Too often they say that their patents will practically murder their competitors in their sleep, occasionally adding that generic "Mwahaha!"
Usually you can get a way around but too often that involves doing actual R&D when management rather prefer to talk about the R&D they do that nobody else in the company has seen any traces of. Remember that "GIF patent"? Massively overblown. Mind you also a classical licensing disaster by Unisys et al. but that didn't matter much to them. I remember back then one guy proposed replacing the LZW algorithm with a non-patented alternative but was promptly shot down by guys who had a genuine mission to saddle up for.

someone help
I just nuked my home folder by accident and shredded my backup
I ran the following command in the wrong directoryfind ./ -exec mv {} ./ \;
which was ran in my home directory
I've got a bunch of files scattered now and I'm trying to piece it back together.
Can you help me rebuild my home folder by telling me the location of files that I can't figure out where they go?
I managed to clean up most of it but folders like firefox and I would imagine a few dot folders are still unknown.
anyways for starters can anyone tell me where the tmp-localhost folder goes? It's got an xauth-1000 file inside it
next I am going to try to rebuild the firefox folder
