Currently worthwhile CPUs:
>G4560 for budget builds (<$500) unless G4620/i3-6100 is heavily discounted
>i3 & i5 aren't worthwhile. Get Ryzen 5, drop down to G4560, or up to i7
>No R5 1400 unless discounted
>i7-7700k is good but pricey. If over budget: consider locked 7700; not chasing 4.8Ghz+ capable when you weren't gonna overclock, or get R5
>Cheap Z270 board is still good for faster memory in games w/ locked 7700, but aren't for overclocking (VRMs suck)
>R7/Xeon for compute/multitask/mixed use
Currently worthwhile GFX cards:
>RX470 , RX480, 1070, 1080, 1080TI
>1060 is worth considering over a 480 if same/cheaper in your country, or you just play games it's better on for the price. 1050Ti is for mITX builds
>470 is all you need for 1080p
>Wait for RX 580 in a few days
>Nvidia GPU + Ryzen has issues in DX12/Vulkan atm
>Budget builds: consider integrated graphics over a card weaker than RX470, unless price/performance is better (discounted/used)
>Vega comes in May
General:
>No brand/model loyalty. Parametric filters on pcpartpicker can help
>Consider SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't worth it just for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity as a scratch disk
>Save money w/ mATX case/mobo, and if patient by purchasing your parts individually in flash sales

I'm hoping you gents can help me out a bit. I'm trying to piece together a secondary PC to use as a dedicated streaming/encoding PC and double as my home server. I already own a decent gaming PC that I can stream from, just really want no additional CPU usage on it so I can crunch together a really high quality encode without affecting gameplay using OBS.
I currently own all of the peripherals, including GPU, I will need for this, just basically need a CPU, motherboard, and RAM capable of decent quality x264 encoding (720p60fps, ideally on OBS's medium or slower presets). The fly in the ointment: I own a functional Z97 motherboard already, but it only has a locked Pentium in it (long story.) Bottom line: LGA 2011/2011v3/shoot for a good ebay deal on a 4770k and hope it's enough? Or do I go Ryzen to make this happen? Ryzen seems to be almost impossibly good for the price. Thanks for the advice.

Get an R5, or an R7 if you have the budget. No ifs ands or buts.
>/v/ recommends a 390 because it has 8 gigs of RAM that games never use and it's "future-proof" and "finewine"
>can barely keep up with the 970 in benchmarks
>can barely run 2017 games on medium settings
Is buyer's remorse a common feeling when using AMD?
own a 390 its fine, guess you are playing grim aaa shit that isnt optimised.

I found the problem.
I find your post hard to believe as I just finished Ghost Recon Wildlands in 2K with the High preset. Freesync was on and never noticed it not running smoothly either
Oh, and I have a 290x with only 4gb of ram. We need the rest of your systems specs.
Mass effect Andromeda ran just fine on max settings at 2k with no AA. Battlefield 1 on ultra at 2k is fine as well. WTF are you playing?
alright. I'm going to finally bite the bullet and see what the rave is all about.
what linux should i switch over too /g/?
i need something that's user friendly enough for an advanced windows user yet something that will help me grow and learn more about computing in general as i dive more into it.
so what will it be?

My man, go for Adobe premiere CS5 and get your time back.
Kdenlive is trash too. I got a workable sideshow out of it, but I've ended up just cutting up videos elsewhere and then merging them together manually.

hey /g/, what causes a Ram Error (Intel 3 beep code) when the RAM is perfectly fine? (tested in another computer and it works perfectly fine)
could it be a short? both computers have the exact same motherboard and processor aswell, it worked fine in my last case but I took a old computer case and re painted it and it worked fine in the old case, but in the new case it just beeps 3 times then shuts down, I tested it outside the case and worked fine
>inb4 not your IT service
genuinely curious what the fuck is happening and why for future builds/customers aswell
Motherboard is fucked. Return it.
>>59929844
it's old (Intel DH67GD)
Dust in ram slot or anything else related to contact points in that slot. Did you tried to use alcohol on ram stick before inserting it? Help sometimes.

TempleOS is a basic Cheese Pizza, not much on it but its all that you need.
gentoo: flour and tomatoes, a the leg of a cow
arch: wad of dough, can of sauce
ubuntu: 3 large pizzas fresh out of the oven, but someone laid a giant turd on all of them.

Explain yourself, aren't you supposed to be tech savvy?
I don't need all three at the same time, but the heart of your point is good. One ought to be perfectly comfortable with any OS.

Perhaps it is broken? 10 years is a wild beating for a small hard drive.
Thicker than needed but not thick enough to turn down.

Hey /g/, how reliable are wireless keyboards? I've never used one before, but a friend recommended I look into one of these for my living room setup. Anyone ever used one before? Are they normally battery operated? charge based?
Before you ask, yes I have a decent mechanical keyboard. This isnt for my computer, its for a living room Smart TV.

Welcome to Techmoan OP
I am staying in a friend's camper trailer right outside his house. My internet connection is total dogshit out there, to the point where it will cut out every few minutes and I'd have to type the password back in to get back on(I'm currently borrowing a desktop inside the house). I'm THINKING that if I take a spare router he has lying around and put it out there, it might serve as a sort of range extender, or antenna. Is it possible to do that? And, if it is, how would I get it set up to do that? Is it easy or kind of a pain? Really want internet in my own little space out there. If you know of any other ways that might improve my connection or speed out there, I would love to see them. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Really desperate here.
just get yourself one of these https://www.amazon.com/Alfa-802-11b-Wireless-Original-9dBi/dp/B001O9X9EU

Look up a tutorial on DD-WRT and how to put it on an old router and turn it into a repeater
>>59929434
all the repeaters we've ever had at work were total dogshit (i didn't buy them), is dd-wrt actually good at it?
