I m currently using Archlinux and Windows 10,
/g/ seems to like it alot.
Distros don't matter Anon.
If you haven't figured that out by now AND you're running Windows 10 Gentoo isn't for you.
>>60310262
I have a low opinion of Gentoo GNU/Linux.
Gentoo is a GNU/Linux distribution, but its developers don't recognize this; they call it "Gentoo Linux". That means they are treating me and the GNU Project disresepectfully.
More importantly, Gentoo steers the user towards nonfree programs, which is why it is not one of our recognized free distros.
>>60310324
Indeed, but Gentoo is definitely the best.
>>60310388
Sorry daddy, but I like Gentoo. Maybe send the devs an email and ask them to rightfully place GNU at the start?

Buy new components and resolder them to the board?

Well it would be a great option if I knew what that exact component was
if a cap is this busted then there's probably something else already borked in the circuit somewhere else. have fun.
y'all niggas only talk about laptops and building destkops from scratch. are there Any ressources for buying a destkop/tower pc for cheap? there's at least 5 threads on laptops/chromebooks every day, but it seems no one buys tower pcs anymore, why is that?
post destkops in low price range, anything between 150 and 400 will do for me desu. I just don't want to get ripped off by the tech industry jew, help a faggot out please..
Go on eBay and buy a used dell optiplex that fits your needs.
>>60309893
Buying pre built is a sure fire way to get ripped off anon. What is the purpose of the desktop?
>>60309934
>Buying pre built is a sure fire way to get ripped off anon.
So even as someone with close o zero knowledge (I upgraded gfx card, RAM and some other stuff on a tower.. a decade ago) you still think it would be better to buy individual parts?
> What is the purpose of the desktop?
I mostly browse the internet (30+ open tabs in chrome cuz I'm autistic), do university work and play old videogames.
The only "newer" games I want to play are Civ 6 and others in that league.. I suppose for that you'd need a decent CPU, GFX and about 8gb of RAM? Does that sound realistic?
I also still have a laptop (where I'm posting from now) that I will use mostly for downloading/playing music/travelling after buying my destkop.
Why are there so many Windows useds on /g/?

I have a windows workstation that I need to change the subnet mask on.
I'm not a Windows guy, so I don't know if there's some place I can do this other than the "view network connections" GUI, but I only want to set the subnet mask manually, I want the IP address and gateway to come from the DHCP server.
It seems like once I move the radio button selection to be able to enter the subnet mask I want, I need to enter a static IP also, which I don't want to do.
Any suggestions for how to go about doing this other than installing Gentoo?
I don't think you can do that. Even with DHCP clients on Linux, the best you can do is ignoring the gateway and other options. But for the IP configuration, you can't separate the host address and the netmask (or peer IP on a peer-to-peer link).
I hope you don't want to set up a network with different netmasks because that literally at least breaks all the software that relies on broadcast traffic.
Why can't you just set a different subnet mask on your DHCP server? Even the crappiest router should allow that.
>>60309862
I'm inheriting working on a network for the local city hall.
There's an in place surveillance system (with lost credentials, years ago) that operates on 192.168.2.x, and all the workstations are on 192.168.1.x
If I set a static IP on a workstation in the 192.168.1.x range, and a subnet mask of 255.255.248.0, the workstation can interact with everything on the workstation network and all the cameras on the surveillance network.
The mayor wants to be able to view the cameras, but I don't want to set him to having a static address, because the credentials for their domain controller have also been lost, for years, and I don't know how to avoid an IP conflict happening.
>>60310003
The cleanest solution would be to put a router between both networks (assign an IP from both subnets to a port and enable routing between them), but that would require messing with the gateway.
With any Windows Server from at least 2003, you can reset the domain controller password as long as you have physical access with at least a Win2008R2/Win7 install DVD.

it can't emulate n64 or psx right. so you'll be stuck with nes, snes, genesis and older things.
