seriously, how are people so stupid as to get their computers infected? It's easy.
Step 1: don't be an idiot on the internet and download everything you see. YOU are the first defense! So don't fuck it up.
Step 2: USE a basic firewall that is separate from your computer. Most wifi access points with built in router functionality will do the job. If not then just buy a basic router NOT a network switch or hub unless they have router functionality built in.
Step 3: Use a GOOD adblock. Adblock + has gone down the shit hole for a long time due to having white lists.
Step 4: Occasionally run something like ComboFix and ccleaner. Personally I just go through on a live CD and manually delete temp/junk files rather than running ccleaner. I use something called ERD or "Emergency Recovery Disk". I have no idea where it came from except the fact that I ripped it off this computer shop I used to work at. It's kinda old but still useful. Basically it's a live CD of windows startup repair but with some modifications such as the addition of explorer, a version of MSE, regedit, and some other software. If anyone is interested I may post a torrent link.
Step 5: DON'T BE A IDIOT AND DOWNLOAD EVERYTHING YOU SEE

Just curious as to why you use a Linux OS as opposed to Windows, OSX, OpenBSD, etc..
For me, it was simply dissatisfaction with Windows. The recent security exploits were the last straw, and I got myself a lightweight Debian-based distro. The available software in a fresh install is impressive, and I've grown to enjoy using the terminal. Managing packages is also a welcome change from the clustefuck of installing/removing software on Windows.

Don't like GUI and going through menus
Don't like touching mouse, when I use my PC/laptop my hands should be on keyboard and ubuntu LTS (for stability and LTS) with i3wm gives me what I want.
When I used windows, I really didn't care much about security, I mean, If you don't have brain damage then you should be fine. But I was encouraged to use Linux by aggressive Windows updates, requirement to reboot after certain software and updates.
I just want to use my computer for crying out loud.

For me, it was annoying pop-ups, and the annoying way Windows makes you update. Also, how basically everyone says that you need to disable those critical security updates just to make your system usable. Fuck that.
Lack of customization and lack of freedom, also. In general, the operating system just kept getting in my way.
I haven't used OSX or macOS, but I can't imagine any reason why I'd dislike it, unless it's anything like Windows.

Tx for all the feedback yesterday! I think we are all clear that we need to block the webcam! Be it by using a webcam cover or a piece of tape... Even if I can't turn off the microphone, at least I don't need to talk when online... But I can't be invisible while in front of the webcam! It's crazy we are at this point! Oh! I lowered the price! tx to the OP saying 20 bucks for a piece of plastic was too much!. hopefully $5.99 is more reasonable... It cost $4.23 to produce it... I work as a software developer and I never saw any good female coder that isn't ugly as fuck.
