Why are even "lite" Linux distros incapable of competing with windows xp in terms of performance and resource use? What is it about Linux developers that makes them so inept?

The same that makes Windows and macOS devs inept.
They have very very high end machines and assume everyone else does, too.
XP was tested on a bunch of really shitty machines (by today's standards).
I'm sure you can put two and two together.

Is there any reason to write POSIX shell compliant shell scripts instead of bash scripts?

If you need to run on environments that may only have a simple POSIX shell and not bash, sure.

Otherwise no

So right now I'm running a Raspberry Pi 3 as a basic file server, and DNS server for my house. It works fine, except when there's any real amount of I/O it shoots up in temp.

Rummaging through my shit, I found my old Phenom II X2 550, and mobo and I'm wondering, will it work as a better file server? It's going to take up more power naturally, but am I going to get that much of a significant boost in performance using it as a headless server?

Please, you don't even need that thing to pull them out. Also, those roots are ridiculously anemic for a weed. Dandelion roots around here look like skinny carrots. Just get a knife a cut the root underground from an angle and pull. Easy.

Why are PC gaymen such degenerates and how can we get rid of them?

>>60588015
It's because these pc mustard race normies wanted console gaymes on their anime viewers. They converted a lot of console plebs, but didn't realize that the person and his taste doesn't magically improve, he just presses F instead of X now.
>>
>>60588015
>Why are PC gaymen such degenerates
Mostly this >>60588548 but also the Dunning-Kruger effect causing them to become progressively stupider every four years or so as a new generation of gaymers enter the wild world of computers to be trained by the previous generation.
>how can we get rid of them?
You can't. Consoles will die to out to subscriptions to proprietary Steam-like services and things will probably get worse from there. Install Gentoo and pretend they're not a thing.

I have recently aquired a thinkpad x230 and a 2014 macbook pro

the macbook technically has better specs but do I really want to fight macOS to get the functionality I want when I can just play with arch a bit on the x230 and I've got a very fun computer

Because Linux is an operating system.
>>
I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!
>>
>>60587742
Because linux is just a kernel. Java/google botnet/linux is very different from GNU/linux.

On every single linux distro my HDDs stay off until I access them. Why is this acceptable?

Believe me, I turned off everything and googled for centuries.
