I have recently aquired a thinkpad x230 and a 2014 macbook pro

the macbook technically has better specs but do I really want to fight macOS to get the functionality I want when I can just play with arch a bit on the x230 and I've got a very fun computer

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
