So my dad gave me his old Laptop. Is an HP G42-372LA. The specs are:
>CPU: Intel Core i5-M450 @ 2.40 GHz
>RAM: 8GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 532MHz(It originally came with 4gb)
>Storage: 698GB HDD (Tried to install Linux Mint on dual boot but only allows 4 partitions by some reason)
>1366x768@60Hz screen
It has some overheating problems (the fan is running at a lower speed) and the battery only has 20min of life. Plus, it's running Windows 10.
Should I sell it in this state? Or fix it and keep it? What do you think?
Speccy
Can you get enough from selling it to buy a used or old stock business laptop?

>Should I sell it in this state? Or fix it and keep it?
Really depends on how badly you want/ need a laptop I guess.
If you decide to fix it up and keep it those specs seem to be perfectly fine for just shitposting/ light web browsing the only thing that will hold you back is that display resolution my man.
If you decide to sell it in it's current condition or fixed up a bit (heating problem/ fan fixed) I would then take the proceeds and put it towards something else, so really it just comes down to how badly do you have a laptop.
Also as >>60713508 says, if you can afford it when selling take the proceeds and purchase a used business class laptop, most of /g/ will bitch and whine about Chinkpads but if you get the older ones their tough as nails I've had mine for 4-5 years now without a single problem.
What proprietary software do you use /g/?
Office 365
Chrome
Win 10
>>60713321
absolutely amazing data conversion software. reads and writes from anything to anything. extremely stable. dedicated support team who will personally troubleshoot technical issues for you. can renew free licenses indefinitely as long as you are not making money off of it.
i normally hate proprietary software but FME gets 5 stars and 2 thumbs up from me. SAFE is a shining example of what every software company should be
macOS, Sketch, Adobe shit, Affinity Designer
Anybody have a solution for this? I've been trying to play morrowind for over a day now but every time I play, this happens in about 2 minutes. I'm also terrible with computers, so any help in layman's terms would be appreciated.

Yeah it's a shit.
>>60712443
I'm still amazed that after 6 years of developing their tech, and 4 years of asking for gibs from investors, they still haven't showed their prototype. Whilst Microsoft started developing their AR tech much later than Magic leap and have deputed a prototype last year. Abovitz is a pretty good snake oil salesman I'll give him that.
AR would be cool if it didn't have extremely limited FOV, shit resolution, bad latency and tracking, tether your head to your PC, etc...
It'd be nice to have an infinite number of virtual displays while working.
Post your output of the 'lsblk' (with -f flag if you want) command. Also, general storage thread.

Okay, how about this:
some of the things
What am I in for if I actually use this? Is it as hard to install as it looks? What are the benefits of using it over another distro such as Arch or Debian?
An experience.
No it's not you literally follow a step-by-step tutorial that has been written to accomodate even the drooliest of users
Easy interface to very much fine grained control over the software you put there.
Also no systemd. But if you care about not running systemd and you like either Arch or Debian there are derivative distributions like Devuan that achieve the same.
Follow the handbook, do everything with the defaults (suggestions) they give you in the handbook.
The gentoo package manager does not install pre-compiled software, it installs all software from source by automatic-compilation (although you can specify flags). The package manager is very "safe" to and requires you to manually edit certain files (but it's easy).
It's a very solid OS if you know what you're doing (or if you juts stick to defaults).
>>60711940
not really hard to install
just follow the handbook and select a desktop profile if you dont want to twinker that much with the use flags. Besides these and the compile time it is same as arch linux
What's your preferred software?

What role does the capacitor play in an AC producing power plant? I understand it functions kinda like a rechargeable battery, but how does that reduce cos phi?
Do you know the difference between real power, apparent power, resistance and reactance and W vs. VA vs. VAR?

Good for you, monkey-boy.
Do you consider MyDigitalLife forums and the tools promoted on their site to be trustworthy? I'm considering installing Windows 10 LTSB using an ISO from their forum and activating it with MS toolkit from their forum, but I'm scared of Russian botnet.
I figured that if I were to just pay for a Windows 10 Pro Key from some place like Kinguin and use a clean ISO from Microsoft I would be on a botnet, but a botnet with hundreds of millions of other people rather than being a in a pool of a couple thousand if I use an MDL iso and activator.

Join an active project community there on Gitter/IRC. I'd suggest NixOS since it's a cool project, and a novel idea that might take off.
