Anyone here work as a software developer?
I'm looking for a career change away from finance but I don't want to take a big pay cut. I'm currently making about $30 an hour.
I'm pretty sure I could get an entry level position. What is a reasonable salary? How rapidly for people generally move up? Do you actually like it?
>>60802418
Software dev here making $35/hr with 5 years experience. It really depends on the company and if they have spots open to move into. If you're smart and know your shit, you will move up fast, but that comes with more responsibility which comes with more stress and getting shit done put on your plate.
But it's a great career, can be super comfy if you find the right role and it's not going anywhere anytime soon
>>60802535
Thanks for answering.
Do you ever develop anything on the side?
That's another reason I wanted to get into it too. I'd like to work for myself at some point. My current skills don't translate over to anything.
>>60802418
I'm an intern and I make 24$ per hour this summer after 3 years of CS, got a year of school left. 30$ is definitely a reasonable starting salary if that's what you're looking for.
Anyone else happy to see Intel getting blown the fuck out by AMD?
Yes.

Hey /g/,
What's it like to work at a computer store? What's the bare minimum of tech literacy needed to sell and operate effectively?
I ask because I am looking for a job and saw the local computer store is hiring, I am just unsure if I'm a big enough computer geek. Sure I browse /g/ and care about developments in computer hardware but just wondering if I'll get laughed out if I don't know about the latest soundcards or routers.
>tl;dr: it's LTT the store ethics
I knew a few people who worked at a Micro Center. Basically, it's not about the computer parts at all, and you will get mad super-fast because stores like this just relied on getting money than promoting sensible computer practice
You're gonna hate it once these computer stores want you to push shit Intel chips and leftover house fires
>>60802313
You don't need to know shit about shit if it's a retail chain. They will train you on what they want you to sell and give you buzzwords with which to sell them with. Shit when I worked for Best Buy they told us "sell to the customers needs" but apparently every single person needed a $2000 laptop to email their grandkids and use facebook.
>>60802808
I wish I had a Microcenter near me. They're so much cheaper than best buy and I hate ordering things and waiting 2 or 3 days.
why doesnt linux cost anything???? not storage or bandwidth too???
Fuck off.
>>60802256
Because nobody would pay for that trash.

How would I make a 64 TB server? I found motherboards max at 10 and 8 sata ports.
>>60802151
Use the pci-E lanes then.
>>60802151
SAS HBAs with SFF-8087-to-4x-SATA breakout cables. Those are pretty cheap, actually, the large number of giant drives you'll need will be more expensive.
Remember to use ZFS or Btrfs with proper redundancy. You wouldn't want one drive being a bit flaky to take out 64TB of stuff.
>>60802151
You obviously use a SAS card like a real man
>need new laptop for uni
>buy reasonably priced Yoga 710
>enjoy it a lot until i notice something
>shift key looks like fucking this
What do? Can I remap the shift key to the up arrow? I like the machine a lot and would like to find a solution, opposed to returning it.
Bump
Honestly just looking for a keymapper that is compatible with Win10 at this point

I'm too distracted by the optical illusion dots between the keys.

I just found out that cyanogenmod died after not paying attention to my phone for awhile. What would be the best rom to replace it with? Using a Moto G falcon xt1031.
LineageOS is CyanogenMod with a new name, use it.

So, I accidentally plugged my mic into my sound card's line in, and my PC BSOD'd after a DPC Watchdog violation error. Upon restarting, Windows won't recognize the sound card (doesn't show up at all) and attempting to install the drivers for the card just yields an error message that my sound card was not detected.
I can't think of this damaging the hardware somehow, so does anyone here have any idea what happened, and how I could fix it? Working on a few things now, but any help would be much appreciated.
My sound card is the following:

I'm planning to reinstall Windows on my laptop. Which is better: Windows 8.1 or Windows 10? My laptop doesn't support Windows 7.

This can't be true unless something is locked down in the BIOS shirley?
Just Snagged an old 2007 MacBook pro off of eBay for 50$, it works fine, but the OS is so outdated and useless with anything internet related. There is also a password already attached to it. Is my best bet just a factory reset? Or should I use it as a cup holder?
>>60801626
Password attached to what now???
>>60801626
>but the OS is so outdated and useless with anything internet related
Wrong.
t. Mac OS X Tiger user
>password
If it's a firmware password I believe you can get past that by removing the PRAM battery, if you just mean the account on the OS has a password, there are multiple ways around that that you can easily find by using your search engine of choice.
>>60801626
>There is also a password already attached to it
If it is to the user account you can still use the computer, it is to the EFI/boot you basically got a $50 paperweight.
