This is sort of /x/ related but since the way it happened to me was /g/ related I'll post it here.

I think there's this sort of subconscious collective will of the species. For some reason the human race is focusing more on tech right now.

Yes, tech is growing. Machine learning is a big boom. But wait, I didn't get into tech because of the memes. I did so altruistically. I decided to create web sites for my family members so that it may help their financial and intellectual endeavors.

I ended up staying because it sort of glued on me.

But it's not just that. Have you ever had that feeling that just a little after you discover some thing, everyone else also does?

When I was younger I discovered 9gag, and a few months later 9gag boomed and became all cancer-ridden. The same happened with the local chans from my country.

The thing is, I looked for these things, including tech, on my own, and not led by some demagogy or some other thing and, just a little time after doing so, everyone else also did.

Have you felt this? That you discover things just before something actually booms?

Carl Jung had this theory about the collective unconscious. Some theorists based on these ideas said that the rise of homossexuality is the collective unconscious' drive to preserve the species by diminishing population growth. Why couldn't it to the same in relation to tech, in a way that only It knows how it will be helpful?

So my grandmother recently died and I was cleaning out her basement and found this old thing. The monitor was nowhere to be found and it doesn't appear to have the traditional VGA hookup.
What do?

So I've been thinking how to reduce the botnet risk surrounding IoT devices after they get hacked and I could use /g/'s help.

What can we do to mitigate the damage Pajeets can do to us with IoT? I couldn't care less about the idiots who buy the damn things so don't tell me "let the user suffer" because you're not telling me anything I don't already know.

One thought I've had is physically limiting the bandwidth used by a device. Is there a way to do this that would make it impossible for a chinaman to remotely increase the bandwidth limit?

Assumptions:
*People are idiots and some will buy IoT decivices like networked toilets
*Pajeets will likely be programming these IoT toilets despite not knowing what a toilet is.
*These toilets will be used as part of a botnet to DDOS critical services that lives depend on.

Limitations:
*The retards who purchase IoT crap isn't going to know how to configure a network. Configuring QoS is not an option.
*This will have to be something that comes with the device.

Anti-limitations:
*Changing industry standards produced by standards bodies is an option.

If the tech giants had their way you wouldn't be able to take a piss without them knowing about it, and what liquids you've consumed for targeted advertisement.

Put your iot stuff on a separate vlan so it can't backdoor the rest of your network.

I thought something like this would be useful since there are always threads about going to college and getting employed and such.

>What are certifications?
Becoming certified is the IT equivalent of getting a degree. There are lots of certifications that range from being very general to being more specialized and vendor-specific. A+ certification for example covers computer hardware in general and proves you can fix computers as a technician. CCNA certification proves that you can properly use Cisco routers and switches to set up a real network. There are also certs for things like penetration testing or webdev. Basically anything that employers would want to filter out retards for has a cert.
>How do I get certified?
You get certified by passing official exams. How you attain the knowledge to pass these exams is up to you. You can go to a school, or you can read textbooks, or you can watch youtube tutorials. It doesn't matter. There are businesses that exist just to issue these exams. All they care about is your money, not how you managed to pass or if you even do. It's basically a lolbertarian's wet dream.
>What certification should I get if I want to be a programmer/sysadmin/PC repairman/whatever else?
Use the attached image or ask in the thread for advice based on the specific thing you're looking for.

http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/business/crtc-wireless-code-cellphone-1.4161711

>The era of having to pay cellular providers to unlock your cellphone will end this year.

>As of Dec. 1, cellphone customers can ask their provider to unlock their phones free of charge, the CRTC announced Thursday. At the same time, it said, all newly purchased mobile devices must be provided to customers unlocked.

>"It's a big step forward," said Rose Behar, senior reporter for the tech site MobileSyrup in Toronto.

>Telecoms often order locked phones from manufacturers that are programmed to work only with their service. Then they charge a fee — typically $50 — to unlock the phone if a customer wants to switch providers.

>"Essentially a locked phone did keep consumers tethered to their service provider," because they faced paying a fee to flee, said Behar.

>"Now there's going to be so much more flexibility in being able to jump from plan to plan, from carrier to carrier. That will likely spark more competition."

Anyone know if this will affect us Amerifats? I'm sure the big carriers will probably at least try to force manufacturers to start making a different model specific to canada so phones sold in America aren't unlocked.
>>
It should've never been allowed. It's like locking PC to Comcast or another internet provider.
>>
>>60920537
Vote with your wallet and buy already unlocked phones. From Best Buy, I got a Motorola X Pure last Christmas that works on any carrier. I love it.

Please help a retard, /g/.
My shitty windows 7 laptop updated, and once it restarted it said that it failed to configure the updates, it's reverting the changes, and to not turn off the computer.
Only problem is that was two hours ago, and the update spinner and asterisk keep moving, but my mouse is completely unresponsive. Should I just ride this shit out, or restart? I'm pretty positive that my computer made a backup before restarting, but I don't want to fuck things up more than they are.

So I went ahead and turned the thing off and turned it back on. Started to do the exact same thing, so i turned it off one more time and started it in safe mode.
Guess I'm just going to have to let it run through its update all night.
