Nonfree media codecs because I need muh movies, tv shows, videos
Recent versioned, stable software or stable rolling release
Good package defaults so I don't have to configure everything like Arch/Gentoo/etc

Got a cpu/Video question. I'm thinking of building a kinda retro pc with a 3dfx voodoo 3 2000 pci and I heard that real fast/high end cpu's can cause older grahics cards (such as the voodoo 3) to die cause they get fed so much data the chip overheats or something like that. Would a opteron dual core 2.0Ghz cpu be ok for this? I don't wanna fry my voodoo 3.
Why would you do such a thing... Why not rice a case with modern hardware
>>60934684
that makes no sense
why don't you just use a glide wrapper anyway, are there some games that don't like them?
>>60935010
why would you shove modern hardware into a shitty old case with terrible airflow
are you desperate for attention perhaps?
Looking for a new monitor under $250
What would /g/ recommend? I've been looking at this one by Samsung
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Curved-27-Inch-Monitor-C27F398/dp/B01CX26WIG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497657616&sr=8-1&keywords=samsung+27+inch+curved+monitor
pls help
>>60934668
I just bought this one myself. It's decent for the price. The "game mode" makes everything too sharp and I don't understand the response time options. It just makes every moving object have ever so slight trails.
>>60934996
Thank you for the input. I'm going to go ahead and buy it. I currently have a 21.5 inch basic hp monitor so this will be a decent upgrade for me .
Hey /g/
Did I get a good deal on a Thinkpad T530? Got an SSD to throw in it. Not decided on a distro. Gonna be used for web dev, school, and graphic design.
Also got a 4GB stick of RAM to throw in the second slot if not occupied.
I dont really know, you should've gotten one for $180, this is a little much in my eyes
>>60934698
There were some at auction that sold a for a bit more, but I overslept and missed them :(
>>60934698
A bit more that $180.
Like $196 or something
rate my distro, my /g/angstas
you're black, I see

Hey guys noon here, since you guys are computer experts I just have a question.
I'm setting up a lan party with over 30-40 PCs and I wanted to know if they would all turn on in my house.
I don't have, electrical training so I was wondering if it's possible or if the power would go out in my house, I would appreciate any information on anything related on the subject.
Thanks!

Probably not. Most homes in the US have a 100A service if built before the '80s, 200A in most newer buildings.
Assume 30 gaming PCs with 600W of power each, that's 18kW. Which is ~150A total, or 5A per machine. Don't burn your house down.
Yesterday my niece has asked me to install some sort of Korean horse racing game on her laptop, but everything seemed sketchy about the website, downloads and the installer.
The game seems to run fine in my WM, but it still smells fishy.
I started digging around and this is what I got:
-It's some sort of private server because the original server has closed years ago.
-There's a Russian dude working on it all alone, running the game on his own server and reconstructing the game from scratch.
-The guy can't make any profit on it because he doesn't own the rights for the game.
So why would anyone spend so much time and resources on this if there's no profit to be made?
Could this be used for a botnet?
Is this even safe for the target audience?
Could the guy access files etc. on the clients computers?
The game's website:
aliciagame(dot)com
>>60934586
just install it for her and let her deal with any consequences. why do you have to be some kind of superhero?
>>60934586
i bet your niece is 8 years old
>>60934618
maybe he likes his niece? maybe he doesnt want her to get in trouble? dont you like helping others if they dont understand stuff or are you so alpha that you dont feel like helping?
Your main hard drive just failed. How fucked are you?
Very fucked.
>>60934581
My main data storage is on the cloud with replication. They wouldn't even alert me if one of the backing drives failed.
If they suffered a huge failure, I still have cloud snapshots.
If they suffered a catastrophic failure, I still have a local copy (but it's probably a month old)
>>60934581
gotta redownload 2tb games over a slow ass connection but my data is safe

If premium laptops cost so much why don't companies at least bother putting some good specs into them?
intel has monopoly on cpus and rise the price as they will which effects laptop prices
when amd makes their mobile chips things may change
