What does Linux need to get normies to begin using it? Clearly Microsoft and Apple can't self destruct hard enough to deter most users.

After going through all my shit in Arch, what can I learn from installing Gentoo?

Of course this is my last step before I just jump onto Debian or Ubuntu again. The idea is to learn Linux.

Is that pic real? Looks /cyberpunk/ as fuck. And if you want to learn linux just read its source code.

Looking to use a chromebox and a couple external hard drives as a simple local file server, anyone done this? If so how did it perform?

i use an ecs liva mini pc with an external hdd and plex. works bretty good. at first i had problems with the ext hdd going into sleep mode and not spinning up after no activity for 10 minutes, but it seems to have magically fixed itself after a while. go for it, but be prepared for some unexpected problems

Better off w/ a dedicated NAS. Been using Synology for a couple of years now and they're very good. Stay away from WD like the plague, although their Red HDD's are good. (what I'm using)

Be honest /g/. The FX CPU's have aged extremely well.
>8 threaded
>Strong multithreaded performance because of dedicated cores.
>Cheap
>Easy to overclock by 20-30%
>Can still play modern games and edit reasonable well.

If you bought an FX-8350 in 2012, it's still completely usable in 2017 for both work and games, and likely will be for a while yet.

You're deluded.
They were mediocre when new
>>
And if you bought a i7 2600 or even a i5 2500k if are still reasonably well off and still WAY BETTER OFF than any of the bulldozer/piledriver procs.

Ryzen is going to be the line that ages well. The FX meme has to die.
>>
>>60937554
No it didn't. I have a FX-6300 @ 4.3 GHz, shit single thread performance, shit at emulation, shit at CPU-intensive games bottlenecking my fucking RX 480. Thank God I have a R7 1700 coming next week, cant come soon enough.

Earlier, I posted a thread saying I was looking for a good tiny mini PC type thing to use as a headless personal web server and to run a Deluge daemon to download torrents to my NAS.

I was looking at the MINIX NEO Z83-4, but others in the thread said the Raspberry Pi would be a better fit.

I've been researching the Raspberry Pi, and from what I can gather, it seems pretty good, except I keep reading that it's difficult-to-impossible to get true gigabit speeds from the Ethernet port. Considering that I'll be using this for torrents, I would really want that Gigabit Ethernet.

Is the Raspberry Pi really a better fit for my needs than something like the MINIX NEO Z83-4? Any other recommendations?

Why is this happening? I tried changing the sub encoding from 1252 to UTF-8 in VLC, but that didn't change anything. Is there a better encoding language I should use?

I'm finally getting around to creating the one I've had floating around in my head for ages. I was going to go the HN-fag route of finding the best language/framework/stack etc but I realised that's pointless, just write it in fucking Python 3 and then port it to a more efficient language when it becomes slow. Gonna use the hug microframework for routing and other simple shit so I just write the JSON<->database calls
>>
>>60937267
I fucking hate the whole current microservice craze. I have to manage a lot of them plus have to depend on other teams to keep theirs running which they never do. It becomes fucking hell as the number of microservices grows and the dependencies become more complicated.
Plus you want to kill yourself when someone fucks up the connections between some components on some level down the flow and tells noone about it. I'm a fucking developer and not a slaveOps to deal with this shit.

Is there anything wrong with the MSI B350 Gaming Plus? I called MSI and was told it had the same stats as the MSI B350 Tomahawk but slightly different heat sinks which can accommodate larger graphics cards.

I'm planning to program a simple experiment in hive mind swarm intelligence for fun, I've used Java AWT for a physics engine in the past and it was complete fucking cancer. What does /g/ think of using swing? All I really need to do is have a menu and some sprites moving around. I'm open to using other languages, I just don't know where to start.

>>
>>60937212
If you really want to use Swing, have you considered Java FX?
>>
It's pretty much impossible to tell what you're talking about, but if you're trying to render an animation you probably want a proper graphics library and not a gui toolkit.

If you want something simple to learn on and you're already familiar with java you should look into processing. Punch "processing boids" into your favorite search engine to see simple swarm intelligence examples with code snippets.

Damn it feels good. Don't believe the memes--MacBooks are /ourlaptop/.

>I never thought I would be saying this as a long-time Windows/Linux user, fyi
It wasn't until I received it in the mail this evening, unboxed it, and experienced the MacOS/device hands-on, that I finally understood what I'd been missing as a Windows user this whole time.

Any other anons feelin' /comfy/ tonight?
