I stood in front of both a standard 1080p set and a 4k next to it. I am such an asshole that I put my nose an inch away from each screen for 5 minutes. Studied the greens, rain forest, the stupid tiger footage, dolphins etc. Conclusion. It is a scam. There is absolutely no difference visually. I said VISUALLY. Now, there may be a technical difference, PPI etc. But in the end, I did not notice a difference between a Blu ray playing on a 1080p HD screen or a 4k disc on a 4k screen. Sorry. It's overpriced horseshit.

For media consumption, 1080p is fine.
For desktop use, 4K is much nicer for large amounts of text.

Hey /g/, I'm planning to start my Bachelors degree in Computer Science next year but I can't decide what college to go.

>University that is top 100 in CS
>pricey as fuck

OR

>Community college that is very close to my parents house
>the college fee is really cheap

My question is, do company care if I graduate from a top college?

>>60952575
depends on the unis. which top 100 cs uni did you get into? don't be a pussy about saying it no one is going to dox you
>>
>>60952575
Do the community college path, at least first.

Most people I attended university with (I did electrical engineering) took all their general classes and some engineering and CS classes at the local community college. Cheaper and usually the classes are more lax, at least for some cases.

I went all 5 years to university, only reason was because I went almost entirely free. If I could go back, I would have paid a little extra to go to the community college. The university I went to had a trash math and sciences depts., yet the engineering dept. was excellent. It would have made my life less stressful and I would've graduated early.

Jobs never really cared about where you go to school. They were more concerned what specialties and courses you chose in college more than anything. For instance, the EE program had courses and focus areas including VLSI, robotics, microwave tech, etc. That usually determines where you land your first job.

College doesn't matter, only the networking you do
I dropped out of college years ago, now work at a fortune 500 making 100k+ thanks to people I met doing my own research and going to conferences

So I've got this Voodoo 3 2000 pci and I'm thinkin of building a kinda retro matx box around it. I've got a old opteron 170/matx board/4gb ram packed away somewhere so i figure i could just reuse them. Thing is that I read somewhere some time back that higher clocked cpu's (Opteron is clocked at 2.0 Ghz) can damage the older voodoo's cause they get fed so much data they can't handle it and overheat. So is this right or will my voodoo be ok with the opteron?

Getting a degree in Math is much better than CS these days.
>>
>>60952112
A computer science degree will get your feet in the door for internships. Internships will get your feet in the door for a job.

If you go to graduate school for computer science, computer science with a minor in math will help you since academia generally requires heavy math knowledge. Not so much in the industry.

Wizards assemble !

Advanced users of GNU/Linux (and I mean advanced), remember to try Source Mage GNU/Linux. True source-based distribution, and (in contrast with Gentoo and Arch) is:
Free from obfuscated and pre-configured code.
Fully committed to GPL, uses only free software (as in freedom) in their main package.
With even the documentation licensed as FDL.
Without 3rd party patches, sensible defaults or masked packages.
Doesn't need obfuscated python libraries, only bash.
Use clean dependencies as they came from upstream developers, which by the same provides instant updates.
Can heal broken installs.
Can also use flags.

Do you like Arch Linux's AUR? Do you like Gentoo's portage (or ports-like) package manager? With SMGL's "sorcery" you get all that. Making new spells (packages) not found in the grimoire (repository) is easy http://sourcemage.org/Spell/Book

Bash hackers welcome! Come and join http://sourcemage.org/
