Windows 10 setup won't detect the flash drive I want to install Windows 10 on.

I've done the basic troubleshooting, the drive works fine.

I have
- small flash drive with the bootable installer
- a 128GB flash drive that I want to install Win10 on.

It displays the small bootable drive in the list of devices, but not the larger one.

I've reformatted to exFAT, NTFS, FAT32, kept it not partitioned, converted between MBR and GPT. It's still not showing up. I've attempted it on a couple different devices, each one booting the smaller one and not seeing the larger one.

The drive itself works fine otherwise.

This setup is for a specific use case and requires Win10.

I think coding is interesting. I've dabbled in it since the days of QBasic for DOS, learned C, C++, HTML. VB.net...

But I find it hard to get motivated to actually code anything serious. Aside from making a website, I can't think of any program to write, that someone would actually want or use. Games are out the question for me, since I suck at art. I don't want to make some shitty web browser, or image editing program, or document editor, since all those markets are taken over. I really dont want to make some shitty social media cancer either.

Is there anything worth coding?

Define helpdesk for me.
I do "IT" at a small company. Which amounts to: doing nothing until someone bitches something isn't working.
The old IT guy was a drunk and asocial. So people are happy with me.

Help desk like a call centre? I'd stab myself within ten seconds.

I'd look for a job where you can actively move around. I usually have one or two places I can go to to "check" things. Which lets me get some activity away from a desk and keeps people from bitching at me.

Please don't. Until you get some professional experience, your contributions are going to be pretty much worthless and a waste of time for whoever reviews them.
A better option is to start your own shitty projects and let other people review and shit on them. That way at least you'll learn something.

Democrats do this too. When I was an Obama voter I got an unsolicited invitation to some sort of indoctrination event. Nobody there had anything in common and we were all trying go figure out how our names had been chosen. Do you think hacking is ethical? If so, why?
9 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>>60982799
That makes no sense, hacking is not an inherently ideological act and as such, asking if it is ethical or not makes no sense. Hacking is simply something people can simply do or not do, for a huge variety of reasons.

It's like saying 'is breaking into a house ethical' -- people's answers will vary greatly depending on if they are burglars, immigration officers or a father saving his kidnapped daughter. An action described vaguely, as you have with hacking, will vary wildly based on intention.
>>
>>60982799

The price keeps increasing because the official reason is shortage of nand. But most likely reason is because artificial shortage.

Something about disc drive factories going away, driving their price up by shorter supply thus increasing SSD prices. They will continue to increase for a few more years

I have a file server that currently has an 80GB boot drive, and 2x 2TB drives in RAID-1. I cant afford any big upgrade right now, but need a little more space. I have quite a few SATA laptop drives, so I have decided to run them externally via SATA to USB3 enclosures. I will get a 4-port USB3 PCIe card, and run them off of that, so 4 additional drives will be my limit. I would much prefer a RAID-10 array (4 drives), but will consider 2 separate RAID-1 arrays (2 drives each). I was hoping /g/ could help me decide on the configuration. Heres what I have (all SATA 3Gb/s):

2x 250GB 7200rpm (non-matching brands)
2x 250GB 5400rpm (non-matching brands)
3x 160GB 5400rpm (Hitachi + models exactly the same).

My top options are:
1 - buy a 4th Hitachi ($12.50) and RAID-10 the 4x 160GB drives
2 - RAID-10 the 4x 250GB drives (even though no models match)

If I go with option 2, should I try to set it up a certain way. for example:

[ 7200 mirror 7200 ] stripe [ 5400 mirror 5400 ]
or
[ 7200 mirror 5400 ] stripe [ 7200 mirror 5400 ]

Pic not mine. Also, file server thread

I'd go with snapraid and then some sort of drive pooling solution. Or if you want to go with paid software, look into unraid as well.

You can save space by just using parity drives instead of a mirrored configuration, and you can have all your data in one pool, even with mismatched disks. Keep in mind that only the largest disks can serve as parity drives.
>>
This isn't making much sense to me.

It also seems like cheaping out might actually be costing you more.

Why are you running them externally? Are you out of SATA ports on the mobo? Physical case space?

I'm guessing you only have 4-SATA port's on mobo in their based on LGA775 mobos.

Do you already have all the SATA->USB3 enclosures/adapters you need? Those things cost money themselves. If you need 4 of them that's already like $40+ (depending on if you go with an actual physical enclosure) or just a USB3->SATA cable.

For comparison a 2TB WD Red drive is like $80 USD. A 'refurbished' 1TB drive can be found on newegg for $31+USD.

If you do lack the ports, you could also look at buying a new mobo.

Is that shitty Optiplex/cpu going to support USB3 speeds and enough performance for software raid?

Are you considering that the core2duo and PSU might end up costing you more money due to power efficiency?

Whats the actual workload/performance requirements? Is it running in a company or hosting your TV shows. Are you able to ghetto mount the drive in the case or does it need to be professional.

In my experience with USB storage for SATA drives isn't great. When I tried it, things like S.M.A.R.T. stats didn't get passed through and the speed was horrible (this was a USB2, but only a single drive so it should have been enough, was a cheap Chinese adaptor though).

Also I don't know how well USB3 would handle the bandwidth being access on multiple devices simultaneously and I'm guessing a cheap drop in 4port USB card wouldn't help.

PCIe add in SATA cards are also an option but have also been bad in my experience, get heaps of dmesg error messages. Once again these are cheap cards not the $120+ ones.

Trying to shoehorn RAID10 into this is just silly.

http://www.bitsandchips.it/english/52-english-news/8509-skylake-x-14-16-18-core-will-utilize-mcc-die

"A lot of users don’t seem to know that Intel – for almost 10 years – use three kind of Die to produce its own Server SKUs in order to maximise profits: LCC (Low Core Count), MCC (Medium Core Count) and HCC (High Core Count).

For this reason we have to wait a little bit longer to see 14, 16 and 18 core variants of Skylake-X SKUs. These CPU are based on MCC Die (Up to 20 Core), while 6/8/10/12 variants are based on LCC Die (Up to 12 Core). Intel has always used only LCC Dies in its HEDT SKUs, until today.

Intel will have hard times to tweak the MCC Die in order to stay inside the TDP supported by LGA2066 Socket (140W, max 160W), and that’s why we could see a new revision of this socket (Intel engineers are still thinking how to solve this situation)."

tl;dr Intel announced high core count CPUs for X299 without even thinking about how they would work. Amazing knee-jerk reaction.

a bios update will be released, this is nothing.

Unless mobo makers have a time machine and predict all future CPUs for that socket they just release bios updates to ensure compatibility with future CPUS.
>>
>>60982703
Way to miss the point. We're talking power limitations, not compatibility. Considering how much of a house fire these chips are, the higher end parts may be just too much for the current boards. Can't fix that with a BIOS update.
>>
This was a problem with many AM3 boards too. Whilst they would technically support the 9590, you could expect the VRMs to burst into flames under load.

The screen doesn't turn on, after I disassembled it, I found out that the connector of the cable marked in pic related is broken and doesn't have any pins to connect it in the motherboard.
Any idea what is the name of this cable so I can order one online?

boolean if size/speed is an issue, a string if it's not, it also gives you the ability to store other values such as "not specified" or something

Would you consider yourself an Android "power user?" If so, which apps/functions do you use to get the most out of your phone day to day?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>60982483
I'm the very opposite of a power user. I hate phones and I resent having to have one at all. I really, really resent the fact that I have to learn so much about this shitty, useless, brain-damaged platform to rip out the operating system and flash lineageos in a convoluted, device-specific manner just so I can avoid intense surveillance. "it doesn't report any information back to the organization that wrote the OS" should be a baseline feature, not something I have to go to a lot of trouble to set up. (Apple has the exact same problem, they're just less crass about it. And don't let you do anything about it.)

Phones exemplify everything that's wrong with modern technology.
