Is Debian just for servers ? I'm thinking about installing it as a nice light programming environment (mostly C and Python, but I want to try new things like Go and Rust too), but I keep seeing this "for servers" meme.

It's not just for servers. It's a stable distribution that doesn't have new packages unless you go testing or sid. It's a good base distro for doing whatever you want on it.

Since I've been called a shill simply for posting sales stats from http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/

I have NOT included any intel figures except for the g4560(it was either that or the 1400 alone).

As I said, YES, Ryzen sales are going somewhat well
and
YES, Amd's marketshare is somewhat expaning.

BUT the Q1 marketshare comparison posted around is deceptive, because it reflects the initial launch hype figures more than anything.

As you can see now in Q2 the sales are going flat if not declining.

And yes, intel is still outselling 4x or 5x across the whole lineup and segments and it's not my fault.

Pls comment.

So why didn't you stop the Mexican kid from taking your laptep?

I'm currently shopping around for a new laptop. I've got my eye on a couple of 13/14 inchers due to daily transportation etc. It seems like everywhere I look I'm being told to invest in a hybrid, either as a detachable or bendable ultrabook.
Until now I've suffered with my lenovo flex 2 (loud fan, shitty processor, random shut-downs etc) and I've not been impressed with the touch screen feature.
It could just be that I've not made the most of it and the overall shittiness of the laptop marred my experience of the 2-in-1, so someone PLEASE EDUCATE ME; does anyone actually ever use the hybrid feature and is it worth it?
Ps I already have an iPad and barely use it lol

In my years and years of using computers, I have YET figured out how to make a damn good high quality recording.

Here's what I'm trying to do. I want to record a video that is native 640 x 480. I want it to be as crisp as it can be. I want it to be scalable to modern resolutions, despite it being 4:3. I want it to be capable of being seen at 16:9, like on youtube. If I have to, I will just keep all the empty space outside it black so I can retain maximum quality and viewing space without making it too large.

The thing Im recording is about that size, but when I use something like dxtory, it just scales the image up to the size I want when I clip the areas. The video comes out worse for it, too. When I use anything else, like OBS, the quality also sucks despite me turning the settings to as high as possible. Why in 2017 there is still not a single solution for doing a raw recording of something? Or can someone at least tell me what I'm doing wrong.

So I built a new computer, specs are:

Ryzen 5 1600
MSI B350M Mortar Arctic
Zotac 1080 Ti Amp Extreme Edition
G.Skill 16GB 3200MHz Dual Channel RAM
WD Blue 500GB SSD
Toshiba X300 5TB HDD
Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4 CPU cooler

When I go into the BIOS and set my overclock settings, the motherboard cycles a few times before booting into windows, in which MSI Command Center tells me my CPU is still clocked at 3.2 and my ram is still at 2133. I have tried numerous setting in the BIOS, manually changing the timing on the RAM as per the SPD, manually changing voltage to the CPU and RAM (to about 1.35 each), but I have had no luck.

Cinebench scores in pic related, I feel like my PC is underpreforming even concidering the overclock isn't working. Maybe I have a bad motherboard? the BIOS is up to date on the mobo.

I am really lost on this one, any input or ideas?

they told me that while the board does support XMP, they do not provide tech support for it and to contact G.Skill. I am guessing the same applies for the CPU overclock

>High end motherboards are now coming with embedded wifi chips
The gamer shit was bad enough. I do not want to pay for a wifi chip, I do not want wifi capability to be there, at all. I do not want to deactivate it and find the damn thing is still sitting there emitting its carrier signal for whatever asinine reason, or turning on whenever it wants to.

This needs to stop.

So I just bought this after my n5x fell for the bootloop meme and gotta say its great for the price so far. My only gripes are that it seems like it charges way slower than the 5x despite them both using usb c and the heat this thing generates seems like it might be a problem if I have it in a case during the summer

Any of you guys try this out?

Nah, it's not going to blow your ass off, it's just particularly weak to pressure and susceptible to bending due to its all-plastic construction.
It's a perfectly good phone though really.

>What is Matrix?

Matrix is an open and decentralized instant messaging protocol.

https://matrix.org

>What can it do?

Matrix functionality includes text chat, audio and video calls, URL previewing, file uploads, encrypted messaging, and more. It's organized like IRC, with one-to-one "chats" and multi-user "rooms" available from any one server.

Matrix is also federated, meaning the users from one Matrix server are capable of participating in chats and rooms on others.

Coming from another service entirely? Matrix also has protocol bridging to popular services like Discord, IRC, Rocket Chat, Slack, and XMPP.

>Who is it for?

Matrix is for everyone, but the layout and feature-set might be most familiar to anyone coming from Discord or IRC.

>Where should I start?

Banter City has a guest-accessible general room at:

https://matrix.to/#/#general:banter.city

People are worried about what kind of AV they should get, what sort of firewall settings, how to harden their OS so they don't get hit by the ransomware wave.

Anybody here doing the sane thing and just making backups?

I like vipre antivirus. If you can afford it, 5th gen firewalls like Sonicwall, Baraccuda, Cisco or Watchguard can filter virus in the TCP/IP stream.
You can't harden against cryptowall or wannacry far as I know. They run as user mode processes and dont require admin. They only access what the user can access.
Since they're targeted at Windows, not running windows may help. Another would be to virtualize your browser so if infected there is no general network capability. You will need the more advanced firewall to create seperate networks to handle your needs and a seperate security network.

I use shadowcopies every hour and could do incrementals on the same timeline or potentially use a constant replication. Another great idea is to host your data on a SAN or NFS platform and snapshot it on whatever schedule you are comfortable with. Keep your email, databases and user data as seperate mounts as these only target user data today anyhow.

Biggest plus would be blocking users from general internet surfing and training them on how to be stupid. Most of these attacks are using forms of social engineering to trick people into running them. We had a cryptowall infection which was tied to a facebook ad. Simple to block most of the internet from people but perhaps not practical.

I used to work for Barracuda. It's a load of garbage. Never trust definition-based AV scanners to work reliably.
