Stupid Questions Thread.
Sometimes stupid questions get stupid answers.
Not kosher or halal.
Is it possible to attach a virus/trojan/malware/ransomware to an .mp3 file or similar? I downloaded an album off of a filehosting site after specifically requesting it to be uploaded from a person, which makes me massively paranoid of their intentions.
I tried googling it, but got everything from "you're fine" to "UR COMP HAS AIDS LOL".
What programs are better than VLC for viewing visual media?
>>61499829
MPC (CCCP if codecs are still a problem) and MPV.
And almost everything.
>>61499823
Scan it with malwarebytes or upload it to virustotal.
Its clean? its safe.
I have this old intel thinkpad x130e that i want use as a linux machine and i see people her shilling gentoo. How hard is it for a linux noob to learn it and where can i learn how to use.
Install source mage gnu/linux instead, is perfect and more easy to install

I remember a year ago, there was a guy peddling a forum with hacked accounts e.g. Netflix. I lost the website, anyone know it?
INB4 go buy it
go buy it
Pirate what you want to watch like a respectable human bein/g/
A friend once asked me to watch a video with her that she was going to display on her computer using Netflix. I declined, saying that Netflix was such an affront to freedom that I could not be party to its use under any circumstances whatsoever.
It's actually not bad. Comfy af.
>>61498791
The aspect ratio on it is actually GOAT tbqh.

Are fingerprint authentication solutions on smartphones more or less secure than using a PIN?
>PINs can be shoulder-surfed by people nearby
>some fingerprint sensors are laughably easy to bypass with a bit of gelatin
There's no absolute answer. In some scenarios it's worse. In others it's better.
>>61498547
fingerprints should be used as usernames not as passwords reeeeeeeee
biometrics are usernames not passwords
>"hahahaha fuckin NORMIES using VLC to watch NORMIE SHIT!! Download MPV TO WATCH anime fucking VLCFAG
Why should I care about what media player I use? They're all the fucking same.
I don't see a damn difference between VLC, MPV, Windows 10 Media Player, MPC, and QuickTime, all on the same file
Is this the biggest meme to happen on /g/?
Pic related, it's the face of every faggot on this damn website where media players matter.
Damn, you're actually butthurt over this.
Use what you want retard. Some people like full customization, some dont give a shit. This is a technology board, meaning people like to tinker and have full control which is why mpv is so popular here.
>>61498484
Use whatever you want then.
I don't get why you get so upset just because someone on an anonymous image board wrote a post saying "install X video player"
>>61498484
>I don't see a damn difference
I'm sorry you don't have a 20/20 vision like the rest of us here so that you can enjoy the visual improvement from using mpv. I bet you even have terrible font rendering but think it looks okay.

How long until bigger companies start doing this?
Why not just wear a ring with the chip in? Less chance of infection. Or a fob like everyone else.

If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC
CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560/G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming
GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM
General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.
If I just wanna add two sata cables to my system for some more drives(not raid) is this alright

would i be getting the full individual-drive speed
I got my monitor to 75Hz (lowered the res so it would allow me), and damn, the difference is really there. I wonder what a 144Hz or 240Hz one feels like
I managed to snap a pin on my USB 3.0 header on my motherboard. I've got a bit of wire used for vaping and pushed it as far into the male end and snipped it to a size that is making contact but I can still pull it out with pliers incase. good idea or not?
USB ports are working perfectly and have been for a while. Just want opinions on my bodge fix

ITT: Reasons for and against installing fedora

The best NSA bot out-of-the-box!
SystemD fully compatible!
Just works!
I'm installing Fedora because everything else is shit. Ubuntu will eventually become polished once they get off their asses over there. Until then, I will be using Fedora 26 once the ISO finishes downloading.

I use sh. It's nice to not need to install bash to use my scripts.

I use actual programming languages instead. I like portability and non-cancerous/less cancerous syntax and semantics.
>need some fast file manipulation
>boot up fish
>need something a little more complex
>write a python script so i can actually do it without wishing for death or having to google for every single retarded arcane weird syntax detail
when would i use bash script
