That aside, I think the standard lossy format has been won by AAC (the new MP3), and of course the real MP3 which might die off. Opus is obviously superior but it feels a lot more niche. Just transcode

Basic is the best programming language.
You can squeeze it in 4KB, it tells you the line you are, it's easier to understand, and have powerful branching tools like goto and gosub.

Hey /g/, I'm looking for a new laptop for University, I want at least 8gb of ram, I prefer intel but if you find an AMD one that's good, recommend that too.
Its mainly going to be used for school work, and a little bit of small video games (Binding of Isaac, Rocket league). I can run the games on low, I don't really care.

Alright, I'm going to build a freeNES. Is there any glaring flaws with this build? I'm hoping to get 2 of the HGST drives with one running as a backup of the other. Is the Pentium going to be fine for just simple file transfers with the drives running ZFS?

Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

For just 1920x1080 gaming probably not unless you can get a deal on one. Or you know you want to play some game that needs a 1070 to play on maximum quality. All the prices are still a bit fucked up due to crypto mining.

a lot of updated software will run on XP, but not on 2000, so you may have to find some older version of stuff.
security-wise, it's not patched anymore. this begs the question: does anyone make malware or exploits specifically targeting it anymore? XP exploit that don't work on patched XP might work on 2000.
