Let's get a thread going about movies that actually got technology right.

I'll start it out with "The Social Network".

That's a classic.

Let's talk Desktop Environments (NO WMs PLEASE). I'm looking for a desktop environment for Linux, and sadly, it seems that the older generation desktop environments were more functional and feature-filled than Gnome Shell and Unity. Now I'm trying to decide between Linux Mint MATE and Xubuntu. So what do you guys use and why?

TL;DR
What DE (NO WM'S) do you guys use and why?

Unix General - /uxg/
Thread: 0001
Last Thread: N/A

>What is Unix?
Unix is a multitasking, multiuser computer operating system that exists in many variants. The original Unix was developed at AT&T's Bell Labs research center by Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, and others. Since then, Unix research been wide-spread, with notable contributions coming from institutions such as University of California at Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Purdue University, and others as well as private institutions like Sun Micro-systems and Hewlett/Packard.

>Why Use Unix?
From the power user's or programmer's perspective, Unix systems are characterized by a modular design that is sometimes called the "Unix philosophy," meaning the OS provides a set of simple tools that each perform a limited, well-defined function, with a unified filesystem as the main means of communication and a shell scripting and command language to combine the tools to perform complex workflows. The C programming language was designed around the operating system.

>Name of the Game
There is a bit of confusion, even among users of the operating systems, regarding naming. In general, UNIX is an operating system that was created by Bell Labs and is a trademark of the Open Group. UNIX no longer properly exists. A Unix is an operating system that follows a strict set of guidelines known as POSIX. Finally a *NIX, or less commonly *nix, is any operating system which is not POSIX-compliant or is partially POSIX-compliant, that still follows the Unix Philosophy. GNU/Linux is the most famous example.

How /g/ store video and music? Do you even do it?
Don't know what codecs/format use to do it.
FLAC for audio, that's obvious, but what about movies?
Is 720p in matroska enough? For me it's right - small size up to 5GB, good video quality with nice bitrate and often it contains DTS audio.
>implingy I can hear the difference between DTS and 192kbps mp3

What about you?

Bluray remuxes from private trackers are the only correct answer.
>>
>>42501831
192kbit/s mp3 probably isn't surround when it comes to movies, while DTS probably is.

I download 1080p encodes done by good groups from private trackers. Usually at least 10GB per movie, more often than not 15GB per.

FLAC music from what.cd obviously.

Build a piratebox:

A PirateBox is a portable electronic device, often consisting of a Wi-Fi router and a device for storing information, creating a wireless network that allows users who are connected to share files anonymously and locally. By definition, this device is disconnected from the Internet.

Today, I was out from morning till evening, and used the opportunity to carry my piratebox with me. The result was not overwhelming, just got a few messages, most nonsensical, in the shoutbox. I should probably use a less suspicious SSID, like that of an actual local network, or "free wifi" next time.

>RollerCoaster Tycoon
>Scottish game developer Chris Sawyer originally wanted to create a sequel to his highly successful Transport Tycoon, but after becoming obsessed with roller coasters, he changed the project into RollerCoaster Tycoon. Sawyer wrote RollerCoaster Tycoon in x86 assembly language, which was rare for a game published in the late 1990s. Some functions were written in C for interaction with the Windows operating system.[1]
>Some functions were written in C for interaction with the Windows operating system.[1]
Any else find it comical that he had to move from assembly to a higher-level language just so he could interact with the OS?

How close are we to true Virtual Intelligence or Artificial intelligence?

For those who don't know, VI's are programs used to make the interface of computers and the like easier, allowing voice commands with scripted responses and actions. The problems encountered with this is that it cannot learn like human intelligence can. They can 'learn' by getting more scripting done to improve their collection of answers, but they cannot take initiative or solve problems, and above that they have to be 'taught' by a user.

AI is something I believe we haven't even come close to yet. At NASA and Google, they have been experimenting with quantum computing, but no real results can be seen yet when it comes to Artificial Intelligence. Judging, thinking, decision-making and taking initiative are all things a true AI should be able to do, and that's extremely hard to mimic.

Hopefully you guys have more insight in this than I have, and I was wondering what your opinion was.

1. What exactly is an A.I. according to you?

2. How close are we to accomplishing A.I.?

Look to Google. They're the ones building huge neural networks and cannabilizing robotics companies. I'm sure it's mentioned often during blue sky meetings.
>>
You said "What exactly is an A.I. according to you?". Is this correct?
>>
True A.I.? If you assume that Google/NASA has the funds and time, we could probably see it in out lifetime. I think that people would get buttmad though. Like people who'd seen too much I, Robot and the like. They'll try to stop the research or force some law against it. Still,

I'd piss myself if I'd have a computer program ask me: 'Who am I? Why am I here? Do I have a soul?'

I'd freak the fuck out. If they do accomplish it though, we have to be careful as fuck with it. Hackers would become the most dangerous criminals in the world. If you tamper with an A.I. that has the processing power to spread itself across the internet it could turn into a digital apocalypse.

OKay. So the introduction to this page shows a tutorial in how to install Gentoo on your machine. However it seems like the majority of the Linux users here uses Arch Linux.
Is Gentoo just so comlicated that it needs its own tutorial or is Arch just the preferred Linux distro.
