I'd like to start meditating, but I can't find any guides that aren't full of hippie/new-age bullshit.

Does this count as a /fit/ topic, and if so, can y'all point me in the right direction?

"Waking Up"
By Sam Harris
>>
>>35186633
i've seen the same post so many times. you don't need a guide to meditation. you just sit there, focus on good posture, focus on breathing. from there you can either
>let your mind wander and observe where it goes
>restrain your mind and keep it from wandering, focus only on breathing
i prefer the second, crazy relaxing once you have some success with it

The "Headspace" app/website

>>35186662
no
>>
>>35186633
headspace app is great, after 10 free sessions there is a monthly charge, but its worth it imo

smiling mind is basically the free version of headspace. Same info/techniques, just not executed as well as headspace. but its 100% free so thats nice

happy thinking, OP
>>
>>35186686
i was the guy that shit on having a guide but this infographic is very good
>>
>>35186685

letting your mind wander freely is the opposite of meditation

i kind of agree but i've had people claim "that's how i meditate". fugging internet
>>
>>35186741
Meditation means you let everything roam free. You yourself should stop existing as an actual being and instead become an observer. Also meditation have nothing to do with sitting, breathing and concentrating. Those things merely help you achieve the state.
>>
>>35186779

as far as I'm concerned, you should be able to observe your toughts while gently pushing them away to return your mind to a state of stillness, or being able to put the focus on stuff you want, like initially the breath
>>
>>35186820
You focus on breathing so you silence your inner "voice". When you focus on breathing, you arent narrating your thoughts. The idea is to let your thoughts be visual. So shutting off these visuals is the opposite of your goal.

Just to be perfectly clear. The voice I am talking about is when you think to to yourself "well, tomorrow I have to go and buy new shoes, hope they have some nice ones" while visual is what happens when somebody screams "watch out" at you. You dont think "oh, somebody think I should be aware of my surrounding, I really hope there isnt a fucking log falling on me or something" but instead you duck or something.

and then following the normal course, the thread devolved into people telling each other how to meditate properly, thereby becoming useless to all

-Pick an exercise, anyone
-Start performing it
-Focus, but really focus, on form
-Focus on what happens to your body while you perform it, how you breath and the feel of the muscles that are being worked

Congrats. You started meditating.

Here is the thing anon...

All of Life is in a constant state of meditation, the only thing you do when you "sit down to meditate" is realize this, you aren't actually doing anything other then realizing your state in the universe

In reality everything you do is meditation, Lifting, fucking like a deranged beast, reading, shitposting, its all part of the ether

So stop trying by sitting down and breathing like an autist and just....enjoy it

Meditation and focus drills have health and fitness benefits. Cut the shitty "presence in the universe" shit and get dat grey matter going.

>Meditation and focus drills have health and fitness benefits

AKA taking it slow and breathing correctly have health and fitness benefits

no shit

I'm talking about the consciousness breh, the inner self reflecting against the pool that is our universe, obviously healthy activity is good for you but "Meditation for the mind" is a waste of the precious minutes we have in this human form m8

brah why the aggression? are you ok? whatever it is that's wrong its not your fault brah but you can share it with us
>>
>>35188713
And I'm saying it isn't faggot. Meditation, regardless of what general camp you're pulling the definition from, has clear health and neurological benefits moreso than "just breathing" or additional sleep.
>reduces stress and anxiety
>improves sleep
>improves functional focus and concentration outside of meditative periods
>improves circulation and gives framework for proper breath
>the results from shit I already listed like lower blood pressure, improved heart rate, improved mood and attitude, improve athletic performance
Whether you won't to entertain the spiritual and metaphysical side is up to the individual, but telling people not to do shit because you're some weird pseudo-nihilist is up to you.
