Have any of you quit smoking? How'd you do it, how much of a bitch was it? I'm not a heavy smoker. 1 pack every 2-3 days, but I'm about ready to knock it off so I can get back in the gym regularly without fucking wheezing my lungs out.

I realize there's tons of info out there, but I'm looking for personal anecdotes and it seemed this would be a proper place to put it, given my motive.

this is pretty much the best way. If you want to you can choose to use nicotine replacement therapy (lozenges, gum, patch etc). I've quit using lozenges twice now. It's not that hard quitting. The real battle is staying quit.

Switched to extra strong snus for a while, then down to regular strength, then nothing mostly. I still keep a can in the fridge to have one with a beer if I'm in the mood. Pretty rare though. This is after smoking for 12 years. Gotta get the Swedish stuff though. The American snus is shit.
>>
I was never a regular smoker, but I used to crave cigarettes when I drank, which was usually 2-3 a week. What I did, was literally just guilt myself into quitting. Every time I thought if a cigarette I bitched myself out.

I managed to make it a week, when my friend offered me a cig, and I was just about to take it, when my other friend who didn't smoke asked if I had quit. That was it. I said yes, refused the cig, and never smoked again.

So that's my advice. If you're a social smoker like I was, tell all your friends that you quit, and stay off for them. Don't let them down.

was a pack a day smoker for about 3 years. missed it for a few months but i was broke as fuck. cold turkey is the way to go
>>
Fuck this is relevant. Can't seem to shake the habit. That is what it truly is for me at this point, just a habit. When I wake up I have a smoke. Finished a movie, have a smoke. On a 10 minute break? You bet your ass ill try and cram in as many as I can before it's over.

Fuck
>>
>>35176642
Sounds about like me (op). I don't crave them per se, but often I'll find myself having one instead of going and grabbing a bite to eat and almost always have one before anything else in the morning. Also when in cars with others who smoke. Such an annoying thing, cause I know I can. It's just so, so easy to let yourself have "just another one. start tomorrow."

I was at least a pack a day for over ten years (I'm 28 now). I got hypnotized about a year and a half ago and it fucking worked. The first couple of days were mildly physically uncomfortable, but then it was smooth sailing.

If you don't wanna shell out the money to do that (although remember having spent some money is a decent motivator, and cigarettes are the hugest waste of money ever), check out Allen Carr's Easy Way to Quit Smoking book. A friend of mine quit after reading it. I read like half of it and I could feel myself not wanting to smoke anymore. I put the book down because I was legit afraid of quitting. Cigs are fucking evil senpai.

If this is any help to anybody, I can't overstate how good it feels to be free of those fucking things. You'll notice all these wonderful effects. For example, improved circulation makes your erection harder and bigger. You'll be fucking like a porn star. Probably my favorite thing though is I'll never again have to put on clothes and go out into the cold late at night when all I wanna do is go to bed just so I'll have cigarettes for when I wake up. It might feel like you'll always want them and you can't picture life without them, but once you're a confirmed non-smoker, that becomes the normal. You'll be astonished you ever smoked at all.

Good luck muthafuckas.
>>
>>35176539
I'm not pushing the "vaping" fad.
However it's a useful tool for quitting.
Right off the bat your cardiovascular system begins to repair itself even while vaping.
You can carefully control your nicotine intake.
>day 1 quitting dropped to 10mg nicotine for a 35 ml bottle.
>less than 1 cigs worth of nicotine.
>little to no side effects other than moodyness
>every two weeks drop 2mgs of nicotine
>when you get to 4mgs you can pretty much quit with no side effects or addiction other than your mental desire to put shit in your mouth.
Since your lungs filter out a good % of the nicotine right off the bat, around 4mg people begin to only get the tiniest amount into their system.
You are pretty much not even smoking at that point, just up to you to quit.
>>
>>35176539
As a former heroin addict it was a fucking breeze, I hear people say nicotine is the mot addictive substance. Reminds me of the fatties that say that about food.

It's more of a compulsion, a habit, than a real physical addiction. Keep your mouth busy ... Get a cheap ecig. That's how i did it.

If you must buy cigss, buy a brand or flavor you hate. Radially helps.
>>
I'm fighting it as well, I smoke around 30 a day nowadays because I developed a type of neurosis+ NEET lifestyle and so on.

I went cold turkey a couple days ago, caved in at 45 hours because my sleep schedule was all fucked up and I had constant headaches even before I quit. I told myself I need to fix sleep first again before I go for another run. Not angry at myself, should have just fixed sleep first before I put such a heavy load on my body. Oh well.

Imo half assed cessation is not worth it, it's psychological hell and kills your confidence. You want to really quit. I quit for half a year before, then 6 weeks. The most successful quits for me always coincided with really wanting to quit, nothing else. It's a gut feeling.Physical withdrawal won't be nearly as horrible (because you accept that it's just something you have to go through rather than panicking) and after 5 days or so it's all mental games which comes down to how well you can convince yourself. Allen Carr never convinced me unfortunately, too many flaws in his logic (without even citing research)

Also funny anecdote. Girls have ignored me sexually since... last october I think even when I was being all cool and hip and top dog social. I go 40 hours without nicotine and the cashier 6/10 jewess starts flirting with me. Coincidence? I think not.

btw FUCK it was nice to get female attention again LOL
>>
>>35177414
Oh yeah several years were spent smoking a pack a day, 30-35 only recently (maybe 2 months). Definitely more challenging to quit now.
>>
I quit with Swedish snus, it was easy as fuck and I was a very heavy smoker.
My blood pressure went from being about 160/90 to 120/80 in a month of switching.
I save a ton of money too.

>>
I smoke a g a day of weed. Am I gonna get cancer or anything? I was thinking about stopping.
>>
>>35177208
Yeah it's definitely just a habit. I smoked for a year, quit for a year, smoked for a few months, quit for a few months. Picked it back up again last month when back home visiting friends, about to kick it again.

Honestly quitting sucks but once you power through the physical shit, it's just a matter of mental willpower. I always miss the social aspect of it, mainly because my friends back home all smoke so when we go out drinking it sucks not smoking with them. But like I said, it's a habit or compulsion more than an addiction.
>>
I'll tell you how I did it, but you probably won't believe me. I tried quitting many times, arguing how expensive it was to smoke, and how it didn't do any good for me, but then I smoked a cig that tasted absolutely disgusting. It was the same brand I had smoked for years, but this particular cigarette tasted like absolute shit. In that moment I realized how disgusting the whole idea of smoking is and I just stopped craving it. I was lucky, I guess. Best of luck on quitting, bro.
>>
>>35177529
Smokers get cancer because tobacco develops cancer causing chemicals when its cured.

Cannabis is not cured so it doesn't get these chemicals, you should be OK.

Breathing in hot smoke and tar every day is still bad for your lungs though.
>>
>>35177208
>As a former heroin addict it was a fucking breeze
Not to invalidate your experiences but theres a german ex junkie on youtube who claims the opposite actually

I agree with you though. It's a habit that's tough to break because it's so damn HABITUAL. Cigs go with everything. That's the issue. I think killing the triggers first is the best idea. e.g. DON'T smoke after morning coffee, don't smoke before a round of league and so on.

I dunno, I'm still addicted right now

And LoL sucks without cigs. (Been trying to quit both ofc.)
>>
I smoked about the same as you (a pack every 2-5 days) and just one day quit.

People say quitting is hard, but I think it's really only hard if you don't actually even want to quit. If you really want it, it's the easiest thing in the world.
>>
>>35177662
>People say quitting is hard, but I think it's really only hard if you don't actually even want to quit. If you really want it, it's the easiest thing in the world.
Legit.

>snus

It's far easier to switch to one of these far safe alternatives and then quit than do cold turkey.

Also big pharmas quitting products have a lower success rate than cold turkey so don't bother with them.

>>35177691

I used to smoke two packs a day and it was pretty much the same story for me. It was hard but not impossible. I just cold turkeyed it. Any replacement products prolongued the cravings so I didn't use them.
>>
>>35177692
I can't stand the thought of still putting nicotine in my system though. When I go cold turkey my face transforms in a matter of 2-3 days, I get that healthy glow back, my eyes turn white again and so on. I care a lot about being attractive. And yet here I am still smoking. Argh
>>
I don't smoke but i work in a head shop that carries ecig vapes and people swear by vaping. It's helped a lot if people quit smoking.
>>
>>35176539
I quit one year ago today. I decided I was too old to be doing this shit, so I stopped. Just do it®.
>>
Is it easier to quit once you get out of college? I literally crave nicotine whenever I drink so I smoke cigs on the weekends and stick to dip during the week.
>tfw my teeth are turning to shit at the age of 20
>>
>>35177777
If you want more incentive, smoking staunches bloodflow to your scalp, causing hair to thin and fall out.
>>
You guys are smarter than paying someone to slowly kill you. The minuses grossly outweigh the (tiny) pluses.
>>
>>35177706
You are both right desu.

Less than 20 a day is nothing. Addiction also isn't as simple as "just quit lol", that's ego masturbation.

But I also believe there exists a really deep gut feeling that can tell you it's time to quit, I have had it every time I quit for longer than a month so far. It makes the "impossible" first 3-5 days a piece of cake. It's those attempts at quitting where you say COME AT ME BRO and it actually works. Those times when you want to throw away that last pack 4 hours before the deadline you set for yourself etc. etc.

Trying to quit smoking really showed me I have no clue how my mind works but it's fascinating nevertheless. I think I'm going to start believing in jeebus or something soon just for the mental benefits of spirituality.
>>
>>35177816

Stop buying them.

That was it for me - I couldn't decide not to want them; I could decide not to buy them. Went cold-turkey. Smoked 6-10 a day for 4 years. Have quit for two.

I miss it socially desu senpai

But it's worth it.
>>
Honestly just get a vape. It's a good alternative until you can get off nicotine for good, and you'll save your lung capacity in the meantime.
>>
How much do/did you guys spend smoking a week? 80-90 dollars for me. I could probably buy steroids for that amount and kill 2 birds with 1 stone lol

>>35176539
Cold turkey is really the only way to do it, I tried tapering off but that just seemed to make it a lot harder.

I actually quit after getting my wisdom teeth out because I got some codeine and wasn't allowed to smoke due to risk of dry sockets (when the blood clot comes out of where the wisdom tooth got extracted).
>>
>>35176539
Replace it with coffee/tea. I bought quite a lot of high quality tea leaves (with tons of caffeine), and whenever I got the urge to take a smoke break, I would re steep the tea leaves and have a cup of tea.

I just replaced an addiction (I drink 5 cups of tea every day now), but it's a lot healthier to drink tea than to smoke.
>>
>>35178074
They're still terrible for your dental health, a risk of cancer, and will make you reek.
>>
>>35177795
yeah but then you're still stuck with a nicotine addiction, i guess that's still heaps better than smoking though.
>>
>>35178106
It's called brushing your teeth. The risk of cancer via cigars is still very low, only slightly above the general population. I don't fucking light one up before a date you sperg lord, but otherwise cigars smell awesome. Fuck off faggot.
>>
>>35178118
Regular cigar smokers and cigarette smokers have similar levels of risk for oral cavity and esophageal cancers.
>>
>>35178131
The risk for oral cancers is low for both, lung cancer via cigarettes is the much higher risk. Stop being a massive pussy.

A year versus 10-20 years is a whole lot different. Hell you're not even a smoker a year in. You're just trying it.
>>
I was a little over a pack a day. Started smoking when I was 17.
Quit last May. It was getting old, lots of money, etc.
I just said fuck it, no more. And the first month or so the cravings suck. Like damn they're the worst. But it goes away slowly and slowly.
A huge motivator is after you stop coughing up shit in your lungs and can finally breathe. That's mainly what keeps me from smoking now.

this. my dad got hypnotized 5 yrs ago and hasn't smoked since. idk why people talk about how hard it is to quit when it literally takes a one hour hypnotize and you're done
>>
oldfag here (37). i smoked about a half pack to a pack a day since i was 16. quit a couple times cold turkey, each time lasted about a year. eventually i went back because i hung out in smoky bars, shooting pool etc.

then about a year ago i went 6 months or so having trouble keeping an erection. like i'd pull some fuckin college slut and she'd go to give me head and i'd be semi at best. i couldn't trace it back to any other cause, and it turns out smoking destroys the capillaries in your dick and causes ED. i quit cold turkey the next day and i've been off for months now and no way will i ever smoke again.

that was my motivation. for someone else it may be getting winded going up stairs or something. it may be the way it makes your clothes/breath/car smell. but basically it's a matter of finding a reason to quit that outweighs the pleasure you get from smoking.

other tips: quit when you're sick. you already feel like ass, so you won't even notice the withdrawal. couple days later, profit. also if going cold turkey grab a bag of candy, sunflower seeds, jerky, gum, whatever and stuff your mouth with it for the first couple days, like back-to-back. this will make your brain think you're eating so you won't want a cigarette.
>>
>>35176539

endurance sports. smoking and being a cardio warrior is like being into performance race cars and shoving socks in the tail pipe.

you really need a reason to quit. the problems are so far in the future that when you really start noticing symptoms, its likely too late to easily break the addiction without gum/patch.

youre stronger than needing a substance to feel normal. you know this.
>>
>>35176539
like any kind of training see it through to the end. you started smoking, so any time you think about quitting remember why you started, and see it through til the end. :)
>>
>>35176539
Hypnosis can change your whole attitude towards smoking.

Alternatives to hypnosis include judicious use of shrooms and meditation, particularly in a float tank.
>>
>>35176539
When you're out of cigs, there's going to be a voice in your head that basically will tell you anything to get you to buy a new cigarette. It's completely fucked, every part of your body and mind telling you to do something that you don't want to do.

Just remember, if you don't buy a new pack of cigarettes, you win.

Stop smoking cold turkey. I did 5 years ago, after having smoked for 11 years 1 pack a day. The first 3 days will be kind of hardish, but you will see that you hold and that will make you feel good.

The next 3-4 weeks are where your willpower will be tested for real. You will have to try very hard to remember that you indeed want to stop smoking, you will have to apply all of your efforts just into trusting the person you were a few weeks ago and the decision that you made then. Because you will not "see it" anymore. By that time, your addicted brain will do everything it can to make you smoke again. seduce you into hedonist ways of thinking. But you are stronger than that, and you will succeed as long as you trust in yourself.
>>
>>35176539
>>35179237
Imagine that you have to cross a portal to go do something important on the other side, but crossing the portals makes you a literal moron and makes you forget most of what you know. The only way for you to proceed is to write on a paper what you have to do, and to tell your future self to trust you. When you cross the portal, all you have for you is this little piece of paper of something you can't even remember you wrote, or why you wrote it down.
When you stop smoking, after a few weeks that's what will happen. So you have to mentally write your note on your little piece of paper for your future self. Tell him to trust you, you know better than him. The lack of nicotine makes him stupid.

Like a fatty who lost 150lbs, I rediscovered basic functions of my body that I had forgotten it was capable of. I can't even tell you all the profits I made, because I forgot them. Because they are now natural to me. But what I didn't forget was the bliss period, for the first 18 months, where gradually everything came back and every day I was surprised at how well I fell.

And don't even get me started on the confidence boost. Only 3% of non smokers who try stopping dead turkey can do it. yes, exactly like the 5% of fatties who can remain thin after losing weight. Prove them all wrong, senpai. The fatties and the others. Be the living proof that all they need is discipline and willpower

Was a lot back and forth, starting snusing to cut down on the cigs, ended up doing both. After many times trying to quit for over a year, it just clicked. I was going to Basic Training in a few months, and so i quit. Felt soooo fucking relieved when I got there and saw all the guys snusing like no tomorrow, some even smoking.
My gf held me on a tight leash those last few months, and it helped me stop smoking immensely. You just gotta find a real reason you want to quit and you make it.
>>
I switched to snus since it has no real health risks and nicotine feels fucking great.
>>
>>35176539
Smoked for about 7 years in varying degrees (1/2 pack to 1 1/2 packs/ day). I tried all the stop smoking aids; vaping, e-cigs, nicorette. none of it worked. Tried quitting for girlfriends cause they wanted me to stop, never really worked. Dip use is pretty prevalent in my family so I decided to give that a shot to help the cravings and allow me to still use tobacco but not in as destructive as a way. Dipping actually helped me out a lot. you cant dip nearly as much as you can smoke. And because its pretty disgusting t.b.h., you tend not to use it in public and shit. After a while I just quit the dip too. Been pretty good ever since.

In the end you gotta quit for yourself and only yourself. you gotta believe in what you are doing, cause otherwise once you hit your first craving, you will crumble.

>protip: you will never stop getting cravings. you just get stronger
>>
>>35177208
Kind of this. Recovering alcoholic here. Quitting smoking is tough but not dangerous. Just go somewhere where you don't have access to smokes for a week. Done. When I quit drinking, I had the cravings and the life threatening withdrawal. Relax OP, go live in a barn for a week or something.
>>
>>35176539

> inb4 just do it pussy

As a former smoker this is the best option sorry mang. I quit completely cold turkey one day when I decided it was hypocritical of me to laugh at /fps/ threads while I had an expensive and cancerous habit.

The first week was pretty awful and I wanted a cigarette so badly I nearly cried. The trick is: every time you want to have one, make the decision not to have one. It's simply an exercise of willpower. Also whenever I drank alcohol I became a lot more tempted so watch out for that.

Good luck.
