Neil Degrasse Tyson squats over lmao4pl8 raw and has a higher IQ than your 1 rep max.
Why aren't you making astrophysical gains, /fit/
Well he was a collegiate wrestler, steroids wouldn't really surprise me.
Also, while he is a fucking meme now, Tyson is still really smart, you don't just get a phd in astrophysics if you're some intellectual lightweight. I just hate how he whores himself out with those talking point you're mentioning.
Yes, not smart.
Fields: Astrophysics, physical cosmology, science communication
Institutions: American Museum of Natural History, PBS, Planetary Society
Alma mater: Harvard University (A.B.)
University of Texas at Austin (M.A.)
Columbia University (M.Phil., Ph.D.)
Thesis: A study of the abundance distributions along the minor axis of the Galactic bulge (1991)
>I just hate how he whores himself out with those talking point you're mentioning.
I dunno man, guys like Tyson or Carl Sagan have probably encouraged countless people to pursue sciences.
I never used the word "smart". I specifically used the word intelligent. And yes, you need to be intelligent, very much so, to study physics successfully. If you think it's sufficient to memorize a few things to succeed at physics, then I guess you are the ignorant one. Physics actually requires you think.
This. Intelligence is like genetics in lifting. Graduating from a mid-tier college is like squatting 4 plate. Almost anyone can do it if they put enough time into it, even with below average genetics. Getting a phd from Columbia in Physics is like squatting 8 plate. You must have good genetics to do it, no matter how hard of a worker you are.
>unpublishable PhD thesis
>not even on arxiv
Fucking hilarious. And here I thought he's actually contributed something. You can stop embarrassing yourself now my child
A PhD thesis is not a paper that gets published somewhere.
But you can look up the papers he worked on. And just because I'm nice like that, here is a link: http://www.haydenplanetarium.org/tyson/curriculum-vitae#research
They can and often be published. I don't know how that works in Harvard but where I'm from that's not uncommon.
>all experimental papers on some specific cluster
>all collaborated with a massive group
>nothing new or exciting
Yeah it really does matter...There are good graduate programs and bad ones that accept mediocre students (who, by the way, are still generally smart), well funded/resourced programs and broke as shit programs. It makes a huge difference.
Never said that I'm smarter than him, just that his accomplishments are overblown.
>U of Texas
Correlation doesn't mean causation. As long as the professor that you're under is well reputed he can get as much funding as anyone anywhere else, given that you're not in a degree mill.
>work in film industry
>know that they created the plates by using foam carved by a carpenter before having it painted over by a scenic artist
>there are people in this thread that believe he's lifting real weights
Stop it you guys. I found that scene to be hilarious, but you can't possibly believe he lifted real weights.
If you're saying that poorly ranked undergraduate/overall institutions sometimes have individual departments that are excellent, then you are correct.
But that doesn't mean that the quality of the department doesn't affect admissions/instruction quality/funding.
It just means it doesn't line up with the public perception of the "best" universities. Though the big tier Ivy/Chicago/Berkley schools generally have all around good grad programs.
>hurr my community college education is superior to Harvard because hurr
stay inferior and mad kiddo, you never amounted to anything and i can see you are devastated about it lmao
>grasping at straws
Why does someone not sharing your fanboy fanaticism is so important to you?
I can use this image
If only there was some sort of correlation between high IQ and physical ability - like people who aren't beer swilling dumbasses realize that physical activity and good health are positive things to have in life than stuffing your face with cake and takeaways.
if you guys wanna call out fake brainies let's talk about this guy, when did you realize he didn't even have a real phd?
90% of elite powerlifters and strong men are fat
Do I need to say more?
To be particular this is intelligence in young adulthood and middle-aged physicality, not young intelligence and physicality.
But yeah there's definitely a correlation. Just look at the CBT+SAT threads
You faggots will spend waste your time anywhere, won't you
Your point is quite True, but I think the study holds merit and similar results would be reflected in an older population sample.
Sadly though this thread is turning into a "I went to the University: Of Life!" debate and I'm waiting on the anecdotal evidence that once in a while a NEET makes it big by dropping out of school drinking mountain dew in a basement because they can code well.
Wel Goging ta de scol mit be bad for inteligent minde becusue yo lern wot oter man tech yo not wut iz rel in world
Best lorn frim one silf. not oter man
Yes, so much this.
Talking about your esoteric field, making it relevant to the public, and in general commercializing one's field is literally the best thing an expert can do for his industry and himself. This horse shit idea that one shouldn't make money doing science, art, or other so-called classy fields does nothing but hinder progress and force talent to sell themselves to much shittier fields like law or banking
He wrestled in college, of course he was on gear.
And Harvard doesn't just give out BAs in the sciences, nor do Texas or Columbia. He's legitimately smart, but he's a massive media whore and shills himself instead of doing research.
As a genetics PhD I really don't blame him tbqh pham
Publishing your thesis? Never heard of that.
Sure, just about every thesis (from STEM at least) is based on publications the grad student worked on during their career as a grad student, but I can't say I've heard of anyone putting their thesis through a peer reviewed publication. I can't even think of a journal that accepts publications that long.
The man is a legend. His academic achievements were very significant for a black person at the time. He was a black person that the news turned to as an authority figure which was incredibly uncommon at the time, as they'd usually just interview some black guy to get the scoop on "the black reaction to event X/Y/Z." And while he wanted to pursue astrophysics, he was getting heavily guilted by his peers to not pursue that education and instead just fight for equality. The dude is incredibly intelligent, been an invaluable member to the black community, became the director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York, influences multiple generations to value/pursue science. And what the fuck do you do? You post pictures of anime bitches on a fitness board.
So the majority of his merits didn't stem from his academic achievements. You just proved my point. He can be the blackest and the most oppressed goy there is, doesn't make his contributions to physics any more impressive
I'm not the original poster of that comment chain, I just butted into the convo. I frankly don't know jack shit about his academic achievements, nor do I about fucking... Bill Nye, either. That said, the other dude said he was alma mater at Harvard which is a hell of an achievement. If you want to sit there, dig your feet into the ground and say he's all teacher no researcher, then I'll yield that only on the account of I don't know if he contributes or not. But you sure sound like an annoying edgy fagnaught in this thread here desu sempai
Oliver Sacks is pretty much my goal body. Dude looked EXACTLY like my dad did (who has weightlifted regularly since high school).
"honorary Phd" like kanye west, just because he's famous not because he actually went to college and got it.And I'm pretty sure kanye deserves it more since he has actually give something to music and fashion while dawkins just argues with creationists and explains high school biology again and again.
This is what you are conditioned to believe so that you dump hundreds of thousands of dollars into the same thing you could learn at a "mid-tier" college. It's all about what you're willing to put into it. 2+2=4 at Harvard and your local community college.
>It's all about what you're willing to put into it.
lol no it's not clear you never been doing any respectable degree, plenty of people who put in far more hours than a regular working week has and barely get through the bachelor/master
Do you know what it takes to get a physics degree alone? And he has a fucking PHD. You'd cry your little ass to sleep trying to understand half the shit he's been tested on. Fuck off.
undergrad is basically high school
it doesn't matter where you get your foundation, nobody is going to care about it after 2 years.
masters does matter where you go to school.
he's not a physicist he's a tv clown
he doesn't actually do physics, he repeats science memes with faux-passion because it earns him money and keeps him famous.
he has met up with astrophysics PhDs and gives them the same watered-down schtick he gives the layperson because he doesn't seem to actually have much depth of knowledge
>goal is not muscle size
>leg press kek 325
I thought space monkey was smart
This "talking point" always makes me laugh.
Doesn't matter what he does now, he must be pretty fucking intelligent, otherwise he couldn't have achieved his PhD at fucking Columbia. Physics is not the kind of subject that allows you to get a PhD by making some study on some completely irrelevant shit.
That's fine, because he's entertaining and inspiring hundreds of thousands with Science. There are plenty of heavyweight scientists doing great work, and they're all weirdos. People like Bill Nye, Carl Sagan, Niel Tyson, they're all charismatic and important in their fields.
As an adult I don't really like Bill Nye, but as a child he was a corner stone of my interest in science.
He's really smart and sort of funny. But do you really think he's that strong? People who are smart don't always do everything right, I know plenty of brilliant scientists and engineers who are still bad at weightlifting because they don't mind cheating, or don't have the dedication to the weights, etc.
I only ask this because I mean, look at him, he looks like he's just kind of fat. His arms are tiny, he has a little gut, there's no real evidence of strength looking at him. I'd be very surprised if he squats that properly, based on how he looks.
He is really smart though.
>grades measure obedience
in high school and in social sciences they do to an extent. You'd have to be retarded to think that you can get through a decent STEM program without being intelligent.
>Lifts more by outsmarting gravity.
>First to discover "hamplanets"
>Weightlifting nickname "dark energy".
>Squats for the sunspots...
>Deadlifts for the space time rifts...
this guy makes me beleaf that lifting isn't just a waste of time that i could be spending studying
he must have been so chill in college, holy chit. i'm stuck in a low entry req computing course with a bunch of unambitious mopey nerds. where was neil when i needed him?
