Running. Pros/cons when already lifting 5x/week?
>>
Pros:
>lower bodyfat
>healthier heart

Cons:
?
>>
Wow that Camel Toe though
>>
>>35168741

ugh, I just want to bury my face in there like a good boy
>>
>>35168774
Cons include fucked heart, knees, shins, hips, spine and many other things. Permanent pain medication is probable.
>>
You'll have to eat a few hundred more calories a day, which shouldn't be a problem unless you're a pussy.
If you've got bad joints or something you might want to start biking/swimming instead.
>>
I used to love running until my knees went achy achy mode :(
>>
>>35168829
>cardio fucks your heart

Lmao that's enough little kid.
>>
>>35168829
Any negative effects?
>>
As far as cardio goes, I think running is one of the worst exercises. Cycling, most machines, swimming, body weight cardio and walking are all way less potentially destructive on your joints/knees/feet. It has the best high and burns the most calories arguably, but I never hear about people regularly getting injured doing any other form of cardio.
>>
>Running

Fuck that shit.
Swim.
It works more muscles and is less painful.

In the military so i'm pretty much forced to run.

Anyone else use this though. My gym has them and they are pretty good cardio wise.

>tfw 5 sets of 10 minutes
>>
>>35168963
Just do the 50 minutes mate.
>>
>>35168741
Pros
>more blood in body
>stronger heart
>>
>>35168995
I usually go pretty hard those 10 minutes then superset with other HIIT cardio.

>>35168774
fucking up knee joint; Ex: me. Just don't overdo the running and squating. Had to stop various exercises involving legs, and running for 4 months; its still not fully healed either.

The pros are you don't want to be that guy who can't run for shit.

You don't want to be stuck having to run from something and have your body give out after a few minutes.
>>
>>35169044
You ever think it was you and your form and not just the act of running itself?
>>
pros you get to stuff your face with junk food and not worry too much.

>reach my daily calorie limit, that slice of cheese cake is calling me out.
>go run 10 miles
>feels good
>come home eat cheese cake .
>everything in the universe is good again.
>>
>>35169154
Or,
just don't eat it
>>
>>35168903
with proper shoes and a proper strike.. it isn't that bad on your joints/knees/ and feet.
>>
>>35168903
Why do I get way more tired from running than biking or rowing? I'm in bad shape so like 10 minutes of running makes me wheeze, but 10 mins of rowing or biking I feel more exhausted in my legs than lungs/body.
>>
>>35169528
maybe it's because you use less muscles genius

and you probably don't row hard enough, try rowing at a competitive speed
>>
>>35168741
it will improve your recovery between workouts and sets
>>
>>35168831
I would say being able to eat more is a pro, but coming from an ex fatty that might not be the case if you're smelly skelly.
>>
Unless you're a disgusting fat fuck how does running fuck up your body? Isn't running (with proper form) kind of what the body is built for?

I run just about everyday and feel great afterwards.
>>
>>35168741
It will make you a faster runner. If your goal is actual physical fitness and not just bodybuilding or powerlifting then you should be running. Running will also help with your delts and thicken your ankles and calves more than any lift.

Other forms of cardio are fine, but running is training your form as much as your fitness. A fast cyclist or swimmer will not necessarily be able to run well when he needs to.
>>
>>35169820
>will help with your delts anymore than any lift
top kek
you're saying flailing your arms around with no weight will make your delts grow? fuck /fit/ is retarded.

also, your ankles will never grow unless maybe you inject HGH

>>
I used to love running, but my knees are not what they used to be. Choose cycling if you still like to see the scenery or the eliptical machine if you live in a bad neighborhood and don't want to be stabbed or hit by a car.
>>
Does cardio after a workout destroy your gains or is this a meme?
>>
>>35169341
But if he can enjoy delicious cake, train his legs and get a runners high then why shouldnt ge? Obviously there is more to gain from eating and running than from not eating.
>>
>>35168829
If you run like a paraplegic maybe you can fuck your spine. No, it's not a cons of running.

>>35168840
>>35170361

>knees
Change shoes and run with proper form. 99% of the faggots with that kind of aches are running with wrong shoes. Bring your old shoes (really!) to a trainer or a sport shoes seller and they will guide to a proper choice.

>>35168903
>I think
I think you should educate yourself before expressing an opinion.

>>35170361
It's a proven meme. There's this thing called internet, search for publications on this matter.
>>
>>35170088
Have you never seen a sprinter? Yeah, if you swing your arms hard and fast a lot they will grow. That motion is basically why your delts exist.

>your ankles will never grow unless you inject HGH
Or, you know, work the muscles that stabilize your ankle when you run.
>>
>>35171179
>Have you never seen a sprinter? Yeah, if you swing your arms hard and fast a lot they will grow.
please tell me this is bait.
sprinters do some heavy weight lifting, especially in off season. thats the main reason why their muscles are so developed, not because of the actual 10s run.

>>
>>35170361
It's a meme. The opposite in fact, cardio increases the effectiveness of lifting.
>>
>>35171101
>Change shoes and run with proper form
trust me I did all of that. i use asics now and also spent $300 on custom made orthopedics

Can't go running on hard cement like i did as a kid anymore
treadmill or grass thats it. or when I get home my knees achy and hurt like a motherfucker all night
>>
Anyone else love to run/jog? I can see how alot of people would outright loathe cardio, but once the endorphins kick in, the pre workout takes effect listening to some Judas Priedt or something else that has a fast tempo, im on cloud 9.

>Heart feels fantastic
>easier to relax
>Your fucking lungs feel alive again
>You get into relaxing thoughts and even forget that you're actually running.
>Sex. Oh God. The sex gets hardcore.
>enjoy living long if running in moderation
>softer skin from rejuvenating it with the sweat.
Cons:
>It takes time
>You might want to leave your boring, mundane life when feeling the freedom when you get good technique and pace.
>>
>>35173371

"correct" shoes are what makes you run wrong, subsequently destroying your knees if you ever switch shoes.

We have learned to run completely wrong, due to the shoes we wear. There's a tribe in Africa that hunts by literally out-running their prey. The prey escapes, but they just keep jogging, eventually catching up and tiring the animal down slowly. I'm not sure about the exact distances, but they can run entire days on rocks and sand with no shoes and rarely have knee injuries.

>We have learned to run completely wrong, due to the shoes we wear.
No.

We learned to run wrong because we never run.

For 99% of the population, a proper shoe is necessary to transition into higher volumes of distance running (from their weak sedentary state).

After gaining efficiency and losing weight, less shoe tech is necessary.

Don't be so polarized about it. The shoe companies aren't out to "get" you.

I did bodybuilding for years and got bored, so I decided to train for a 5k that my work was hosting. I did it and had fun so I decided to train for a marathon. It was like physically impossible to retain any weight that I had, I lost 20 lbs in the 6 months leading up to the marathon. Thats the only con I would say, running burns calories that you really dont need to burn if your goal is just looking good
>>
>>35169154
THIS!
>>
>>35176524
This. This is the only thing that's making me hesitant about picking up endurance running. I want to get up to 10km three times a week.

http://breakingmuscle.com/endurance-sports/endurance-training-is-bad-for-your-heart
>According to a study presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress in Montreal, regular exercise reduces cardiovascular risk by a factor of two or three. That, of course, is a fantastic benefit. But the vigorous demand of running a competitive marathon increases cardiac risk by seven-fold.
>>
>>35177415

there is a HUGE difference between running 10km a few times a week and running marathons

honestly you could probably run 100km a week without damaging your heart like that. Running 40km at a time is a huge strain on your entire body - you deplete all your short-term energy reserves and have your heart working hard for 3-4 hours at a time.

There's a reason why people can barely walk the day after running a hard marathon. Running 10km is easy for your body to do - if you build up to it over a couple months you could do that every day with no problem. 40km is much more than 4x harder on your body than 10km is.
>>
>>35177506
Okay, thanks anon! Assuming that I run tuesdays, thursdays, and saturdays, what do you think would be the longest distance I could work up to safely? 20km?
>>
>>35177521
Per week or per day? Because per week you can easily do at least 25-30 mi, minimum.
>>
>>35177608
Per day, so 20 km for every tuesday, thursday, and sunday. 60 km total weekly. Should have clarified that, sorry.

What's the ideal length/time to run every day?

I use to run 7 minute miles every other day (so around 3 miles a week) for around 2 or 3 years until a year ago. I would also do some lifting and miscellaneous exercises as well.

How well does biking affect cardio and your heart compared to running? Will i still get long term health benefits to my heart if I decide to use bike machines instead of running?

Also, le running is unhealthy meme is the cardio equivalent of saying that squats will fuck your knees.
It's only true if you're a fucking moron and you didn't learn proper form. Fit thinks that it can spend 2 years learning proper squat form but can just start running with perfect form without having to get educated first. Fucking morons.
Google front cycle running.

And studies showing running is bad are performed on people who run too much for their level of fitness (people doing marathons without the proper training, only barely "being able to run for that long" while fucking their shit up). It's exactly like taking a curl bro and having him snap his back on deadlifts and knees of squats, then blaming squats and deadlifts. I have bad news for you.

Of course; that thought was constantly on my mind. I forced myself to always make sure to not strike with the heel while running and kept an upright position. Then for squats, always analyzing my squat and deadlift forms, just to make sure that my lower back and knees weren't out of line.

The real problem was that I overdid it as a beginner. Running (literally sprinting) 5k+ 6 days a week under 24 minutes is not very good on your legs if you're a rookie like me. I should have started out slower and with less distance.

>>
>>35179640

>lifting != cardio

>>
>>35179640
Your heart is weak and can't get blood to your muscles and brain fast enough for you to do one of the most basic human activities. You're as weak as a fat person. The size of your leg muscles is almost irrelevant to how far or fast you can run.
>>
>>35179426
Running is definitely healthy in some quantities, but if you're running more than a few hours a week, it really is bad for you. Chronic inflammation is a thing, and the constant, steady stress that that sort of exercise puts on the body doesn't do any favours to the cardiovascular system (without even talking about joints or bones).

People who run a few hours a week are healthier than the general population, but people who're constantly doing marathons are actually less healthy in general than sedentary people.

Interval training is also more efficient for improving health, especially in terms of time used, but if you like running then there's no reason not to do it in moderation.

Just make sure your form isn't causing excessive impact on your joints. Run on the side of the road/grass/dirt whenever possible. Trails a best but not everyone has forests in their backyard
Swing your arms straight rather than across your body for best results

I used to be a decent mid-distance runner (17:30 5k, 4:36 mile) and I swear, my lungs just wouldn't quit.
My biggest limitation was leg strength, but lifting and running will mitigate that for you anon
>>

long walks and short sprints actually.

As long as you're not doing Long distance runs then you're fine just do HIIT otherwise you WILL fuck up your lifting.

Biking and rowing use muscle strength as well as cardio, running is the most cardio-y of all the exercises, with the exception of racewalking.

>running more than a few hours a week is bad
Literally retarded. Running isn't like lifting, you can do it almost every day with no negative side effects. Running a few hours is like nothing.

Also HIIT is a fucking meme too. I have no idea why people circlejerk to it here, it's for ATHLETES trying to improve racing times, not for fat people trying to lose weight. HIIT will hurt your recovery and burn you out unless you're a dedicated runner. I swear the people who say tabata/HIIT in every thread probably don't even do it or do it correctly.

YOU do not do HIIT correctly and you are clearly not allowing enough recovery time if you're burning out.
I do HIIT 5 times a week and have only improved all across the board, especially endurance. Not everyone is a weak bitch like you, anon.
I've been doing HIIT on and off for the last year.

>You cannot be a runner and be strong. Just does not work that way.

Yes you can, and yes it does.

You won't be a 250 lb mass monster and run a 5K quickly, which is true.

However, you can be aerobically fit and very strong.

Olympic middle distance runners or decathletes are good examples. Great stamina, and lifts that would put 99.9% of /fit/ to shame.
>>
>>35179640
>How can it be that my legs so good at squatting but so bad at running.

No aerobic fitness.

You probably run too fast for your fitness level (VO 2).

You need to slow down.

this. middle distance is the key. marathoners etc are skellingtons but most milers are decently muscular. not by /fit/ standards of course

I do HIIT correctly because I'm a RUNNER, not some fat powerlifter trying meme cardio workouts because he can't run a mile without stopping. If you do HIIT 5 days a week you're literally retarded, or a college sprinter.
>>

>I'm a RUNNER, not some fat powerlifter

Watch it.
>>
>>35187276
I'm just saying most people that do HIIT/tabata are precisely the people that shouldn't do it, at least initially. It's the same problem with Crossfit, casual fitness enthusiasts trying to tackle an intense athletic training program, it will only end in injury. Nobody thinks you should squat bodyweight on your first day at the gym, so why do people recommend a sprinting program to people with zero cardio experience?

>humans are made for running
>running fucks up your body
I don't understand.
>>
>>35187444
>I don't understand.
Humans aren't "meant" to run.

We're meant to procreate and pass on genes successfully.

Being able to run well was an advantage, in most climates/regions.

If you couldn't run well, you weren't "meant" to live.

Now, because of civilization, we can run if we choose.
>>
>>35187662
But wouldn't it work like this?
>natural selection only allows those who can run constantly to live
>running is unhealthy
>some humans born with healthy traits for running strive more than the others
>so humans today should have no problem running
Seems weird to me. Maybe it's the way we run? I heard that you're not supposed to step with your heel but with the ball of your feet because that puts pressure on the knee.
>>
>>35187759
Yeah, most people run "wrong" when they start out. Hitting the ground with your heel will kill your knees, mainly because heelstrikers tend to extend their legs out in front of them too far, which causes a braking effects. Essentially you're moving forward, but your foot is pushing backwards towards your knee and will fuck your shit up. Make sure you land on your midfoot with your shins almost perpendicular to the ground. The goal should be to let gravity do most of the work.
>>
>>35187662

the only purpose in life is to procreate good meme kiddo :^)
>>
>>35187759
>so humans today
Humans today have been dodging natural selection for many thousands of years.

Agriculture, the industrial revolution, and a sedentary lifestyle have left us ill-prepared to run like our distant ancestors.

>Maybe it's the way we run? I heard that you're not supposed to step with your heel but with the ball of your feet because that puts pressure on the knee.
The fact that people don't "know how to run" just shows how removed we are from our roots.

If I mad you run every day and you could keep your injuries at bay, you would eventually settle into an optimal gait.
>>
>>35187868
>good meme kiddo :^)
I've passed on my genes to a son.

There is more to life than just that, but the universe doesn't give 3 shits about meaning.

I'm guessing you haven't procreated.

May your genes die away, leaving mine to inherit this Japanese fish trading forum.

Eh, I don't think squatting ~200 lbs is impressive. Chasing that 600 mark is where you start to earn respect. Plus, that is legs, those kids could not deadlift or bench worth shit.
>>
>>35185747
We have different ideas of strong then. You can be decent at both, or great at one.
>>
Just run 1-3 miles a day/every other day, trying to get a better time on a nice route you enjoy. Great for overall health benefits, practical if you're ever invited to play soccer, basketball, ultimate frisbee, whatever, and keeps the fat off. Switch between a steady pace and HIIT style sprinting.

Or better yet, play a sport with a lot of running, and push yourself.

When I was lifting, I played basketball every Tuesday, and my cardio shot up to respectable levels in 3 weeks/sessions, while my lifts kept going up. We finished off a game with 1v1, 1 shot wins, the winner keeps playing, so he gets gassed and eventually loses and someone else plays until he loses. Eventually, we could all play nonstop for at least an hour.

In other words, I hope you have friends.

Nah.

I was a 4:20 miler, now turned powerlifter (1510 lb total).

I just like both disciplines.

Keep generalizing, because I'm sure you've achieved neither feat.

Explain a realistic modern situation where an adult man needs to run 4km at a moments notice where a car/bike/razr scooter couldnt be used instead

Real men run toward things.

Jumping up and running four kilometers is as useful of a skill as a four plate squat to an accountant. Not doing something and not being able to do something are two different things, and he's right, you should be able to run a decent range at any point. If you can't run lmao4km at whatever point during the day, you are by definition not a man.

If running a mile a day is going to destroy your joints, you're out of shape, period. Fuck, in middle school in the 80s we ran a mile every day as a warmup before we started class, which was sometimes fucking running.
