>The weights should be fairly light to start with. 5-10 lbs. is sufficient. The can be performed in 10-15 repetitions and 2-3 sets. Depending on the exercise, I use either 12 lb. or 20 lb. dumbbells.
>And when and by how much should you increase the weights? Eugen says that when you reach 120 reps in an exercise, you add 2 lbs (1 kg) and start over with the beginning number of reps.
>Eugen wants you do this every day
>check his book
>more than a half of recommended exercises are curls
Sandow's book (link toward the top) and the routine taken from the book
There literally was no competition in his time. I don't mean no other people trying to become strong or good looking, I mean no one was actually competing.
>up to 43 bicep curls with 15lb dumbbell in a set before failure
>gotta get to 120 before movin on up to 17lb
And I thought I was doing well...
>Implying my body makes any difference about how Sandow looks
He has decent size but his pecs are nonexistent and his frame is shit. Totally subpar for bodybuilding, but if there's no competition then of course he wins everything.
A large chest was considered feminine in his time (like boobs).
>but if there's no competition then of course he wins everything.
He basically says in his book that there's no need for any special kind of diet, only that moderation be followed. Of course, given the time period, there would be no heavily processed foods in his diet and any meats he did eat would be organic, free range, grass fed, etc.

Cocaine was legal then and widely used. Sandow and other athletes were quite open about it. Little old ladies used coke back then for a pick me up even. Google any number of sources.
There's a history blog post here about some of it http://www.thehistorypostblog.co.uk/tag/eugen-sandow/
They didn't regard it any different to we do say creatine nowadays. It was legal, made by pharmaceutical companies and sold over the counter.
But yes we know know it's a powerful cutting agent a la ephedrine. It wouldn't have given him gains as it's not anabolic but it did very much help him cut bodyfat without catabolic effects.
