Yeah I'm going to play around with it more, just didn't feel good the first time unlike squats.
As for diddys, yeah sure, was doing heavy singles so thought I'd give it a shot. Started at 70% and was like nope fuck this, maybe I wrapped too tight but just felt awful

Its not mandatory, but at some point you'll have to use hook or mixed grip. There's people who use either for their heavy sets, with their own reasons (mostly it boils down to mixed being the slightly stronger grip versus hook allowing a slightly narrower hand position that might help you get into a better starting place).
