Is there a purpose in lifting for strength (getting your max up) when you don't want to compete at all?
>>
>>35139625

Yes. It's fun. You on the spectrum op?
>>
>>35139625

Yes. Setting goals for yourself and achieving said goals. Builds discipline, makes you not a god damn softy, etc.
>>
>>35139625
No one ever got big benching 135. Fluff and pump stuff isn't worthless, but you're not gonna make progress if you never get stronger.
>>
>>35139625
For fun
>>
>>35139625
>stronger muscles
>bigger muscles
>better aesthetic
>???
>prophet.
>>
>>35139655
I don't talk about lifting Progression which is of course key to muscle gain.
I'm talking about lifting always max weight and high intensity.

Depends on where you are in your lifting career. Many elite level lifters do most of their training in 70 - 85% range. If you're a novice or early/mid intermediate, you don't need to think about this.
>>
Lifting for strength is for STEMtards. It's like hard numbers are the only type of milestone they can comprehend.

Meanwhile, more creative people lift for aesthetics. They don't need numbers on the bars to motivate them, they get motivated by the changes in the mirror.
>>
>>35139722

Faggots and homosexuals lift for aesthetics.

>>
Does it matter if you read a Harry Potter book if you're not planning on going to Hogwarts?
>>
>>35139722
It's more like STEM people know that knowledge matters, performance matters. Aesthetics is for liberal arts majors that neither care about knowledge, performance nor being useful in general.

Command over your environment. Carrying four bags of salt to the car.

Seriously, your command over your environment is limited literally by your ability to manipulate it. Physical strength, mental toughness, and confidence are all things you learn when lifting.

Mental toughness: Strength training, and overall fitness for that matter, requires time, dedication, discipline, routine, focus, and above all, consistency. Perseverance through a demanding routine builds the skills you need to be mentally tough in all aspects of your life.

Confidence: The ability to overcome an obstacle or achieve a goal is strengthened by overcoming obstacles and achieving goals. Lifting is a great way to challenge yourself in an environment where your coney competition is yourself. As you grow stronger and lift more, you can feel yourself becoming more confident in your ability to eventually accomplish any task, given time, dedication, consistency etc.

Physical strength: It's disheartening and demotivating to be physically weak, let's be honest. Not being able to run as far or move around the way other men do shames you. Being physically strong, you can lift and move in your environment the way other men do.

I was morbidly obese for 30 years, and I credit getting thin and lifting weights and running with all the positive changes I've made in my life over the past year and I will continue to push the limits of my new body next year. Pic related.

Heavy lifts make me feel alive. I've got some heavy ass deadlifts I leave set in my garage. I just haphazardly go pull some weight through out the day, maybe a rep or two before work, may a rep or two before dinner, maybe a rep or two before bed... The weight continues to climb and it makes me feel great throughout the day.

progressive overload in compound lifts will thicken the back, chest and legs. do it for the density if you don't care for the numbers, but i guarantee you will love it once you start.
>>
>>35140078
It's called a mixed grip, nigger. It's stronger than double overhand for reasons you can google.

What major/career should I go for?

I have high marks in everything, but would prefer a degree that is actually related to my interests (i.e. lifting)
I don't want to just throw myself into engineering to only come to regret it
>>
>>35140211
Whatever you do don't let a bunch of idiots on the worst fitness forum on the internet affect your choice.
>>
>>35140226
Very good advice t.b.h.
>>
>>35140226
Well it's either this, or my parents. And I'm not really wanting all that pressure
>>
>>35139625
You can't build muscle fast enough to see significant changes in the mirror, so it's not as motivating to lift just for aesthetics. It's a lot easier to add 30 lbs to the bar than 1" to your arms.
>>
>>35140211
Fucking nursing at the master level. Like a nursing undergraduate with a master in public health. Your job will literally be public policy to be fit and make people fit.
