Usually if I just have it on as background noise, it doesn't really do anything.
Though the more I actively try to relax and calm myself, the better reaction I get from ASMR.
Comfortable clothing, get the room at a nice temperature, get rid of as many outside noises and distractions as possible, etc.
For the ASMR uploaders out there who actually use a quality mic, a good set of headphones can make a huge difference, too.
Headphone guide from /g/. I personally own ATH-M50's. Can't imagine I'd get anything from this if I was listening to these vids via earbuds, or especially just speakers - which ASMR videos aren't really meant to be listened with, anyway.

Strangely enough I just got into ASMR stuff this summer.. Some of it is... well admittedly even a little much for me in terms of kinda creepy. But a lot of it is really relaxing.
