I blame popular media for this. They take a warning against doing absurd things and use it against normal amounts. They aren't a garuanteed improvement, especially if you don't have much trouble staying upright. After two years of owning them I still prefer low bar squatting in chucks (sorry rip), but they definitely helped with front squatting and high bar squats. Tried deadlifting in them for a few months but wasn't feeling it.
