I've been lifting for about a year now and at this point it's the only thing that makes me happy, the only feeling of accomplishment that I get is from lifting. I'm majoring in Criminal Justice rn and my desire to follow that career is slowly winding down. I'm pretty much thinking of becoming a professional bodybuilder but I don't even know where to start.

Any tips?

Help me understand insulin in the context of fitness. I am not a biologist and would like to make sure that I know what I need to know with respect to gains.

My current mental model is as follows:
- A special kind of protein (NOT a growth hormone, or any kind of hormone at all)
- Absolutely necessary for any sort of anabolism
- Does a whole bunch of other important shit that I don't want to think about or care about just as long as it works I guess

When fed or satiated, insulin is secreted into the bloodstream and tells the body "ok food has arrived let's start doing stuff with it" (packing on pounds and/or building/repairing muscle depending on what you ate)
When hungry, you are on low on insulin. The lack of insulin is the signal that means "start burning fat or cannibalizing muscle if the shit starts hitting the fan" (fat burning and catabolism)

So the proper time to get the high GI carbs is immediately before, during, and after a workout? For some reason...

Please explain.

basic food: high quality sausage, beef, lamb, chicken wings, bacon, high fat cheeses. eggs, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts

for condiments use butter, full cream, cheese spreads, coconut oil

also check out ruled.me for some fancier recipes and keto desserts that will keep you sane

good luck, stick with it and you're gonna feel amazing. I started 3 months ago and on top of feeling high energy all day long i've dropped bf% and carb/protein bloat and have never looked more solid.

Look up those keto pancake recipes. Fucking delicious. I sometimes make them even off keto (cream cheese and cinnamon/stevia based).

That said, I'm not sure how I feel about artificial sweeteners in general. It will certainly keep you in keto, but I always found that over the long term, faking sweet flavors eventually led to craving something sweet and not artificial. Idk. Personally I think it better to just eliminate sweetness altogether, and then if you're really craving, "cheat" with an artificial sweetener.

Other than that, heavy whipping cream is your friend. And the first week or two might be rough (I shat like a garden hose), but keep with it. It's worth it.
