Abs are a muscle and like any other muscle will grow by working them (as in heavy squats and deads of course)
However, since they don't get very big, even at a low skelly bf% its possible to not have defined abs

I train like a bodybuilder and my upper chest never grew as much as when I used a smith machine.
Slightly higher incline than normal. Really pull your shoulder blades back. Have the bar so it touches just below the clavicle and a narrower grip than your flat bench. Arch back and then really slow down the eccentric.
You won't move much weight but it will burn across your clavicle.
Also use it for behind the neck press following OHP with a barbell.

I started going at it a month ago. Not sure if I should continue. gym dude told me to do machines and exercises that use as many muscles as I can. Training with some podcasts is fun so that's cool, but the issue is eating, I can't eat for shit. Nothing tastes good and I can't force myself to eat. I bought protein supplements so I'm making shakes every night, should I continue with them?

Where do you buy your clothes and what kind of clothes do you wear? I want something that looks nice but still shows off my gains.
I ask because over the last year I've outgrown literally all of my "nice" clothes. The only shorts that fit me are my gym shorts and my chest is too big for my button-up shirts.
If I don't get some new clothes soon I'll be wearing ragged old band t-shirts and gym shorts all summer.

just change your long-term diet to eat 300-700 calories below maintenance until you're at your desired weight, then eat at maintenance
