Stored ATP and phosphocreatine are used prior to glycolytic processes taking over as primary energy sources. As far as fat being used before carbs or vice versa, that's oversimplifying how it works. Carbs will be used (via anaerobic glycolysis) when ATP is consumed at a higher rate than oxidative phosphorolation can replace it (such as sudden increases in workload). In steady state energy expenditure contexts the ATP demand over time and the available resources dictate what gets used when. The "fat burning zone" meme is based on this. Higher intensity obviously requires more fuel at a faster rate, and carbs fill this role. The Paleo meme basically revolves around using more fat simply by virtue of there being fewer carbs available, and the occasional use of ketone bodies as pseudo carbs (by conversion into acetyl coenzyme A, which you remember from your glycolysis lecture I hope)

I always thought that I made some progress and even other people noticed me being fit. My question is, is this whole free weight thing just a meme (inb4 functional strength)? Why would it be so much better than machines if I really try to make the exercise work well?

Free weights are better than machines for a number of things including range of motion, flexibility, isolation, better customization etc.
Machines tend to be safer and sometimes offer benefits for compound movements and certain isolations.

Lift free weights.
There's a couple things about free weights. First, you're body is forced to support the weight, which means stabilizers have to be used. Second, machines (non-cable) have a fixed ROM which can be bad for your joints. For example, some people wreck their shoulders with the butterfly machine.
That said, they still aren't as terrible as they're made out to be. It's not like you won't make gains using machines. And plenty of people use machines without injuries.

So I just finished watching Bigger Faster Stronger by Chris Bell on Netflix, and it gave me a new perspective on performance enhancing drugs.
I was fascinated by the discussion of “where do we draw the line on artificially enhancing ourselves?”
Pretty much everybody uses drugs: may it be performance enhancing drugs for sports, study, rehabilitation, military, or even every day function like sleep/aid, caffeine, vitamins, etc.
Why are specifically performance enhancing drugs still illegal and so frowned upon? Why is there no open discussion on this subject and therefore further study?
Where do we draw the line? I feel like this topic eventually leads to the discussion of technological singularity. As our technology progresses, we force ourselves to change and adapt the way we view what is acceptable in our society.
If we have the knowledge to modify our genetic sequence to achieve the best possible outcome, why shouldn’t we? In the future, when we’re able to enhance our vision, hearing or even cognition, what then?
The future of sports in the next two decades is going to be very interesting to say the least.

This is a big, important question. It reminds me of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Imagine a society where every individual is optimized genetically. But, if we all have genius-level IQs and physiques like Arnie, would we miss the diversity and authenticity of our former selves? Will we be robbing ourselves of some of the mystery of life by stripping away every last bit of sub-optimal variation in our genetic code? Is perfection in this case merely a euphemism for total social conformity?
