i want to pick up some sort of martial art. what is good?

i want to use it to workout and also learn how to fight.

i want to get ready for street fights maybe. i dont want to pick fights, but i want to defend myself, not so great neighborhood.

what do you recommend? im thinking jiu jitsu, but everyone is doing it - what else is there?

Two types of martial art: Striking (punching and kicking) and Grappling (throws, sweeps, and holds).

Most effective striking:

Muay Thai (kickboxing)
Boxing
Kyokushin Karate

Most effective grappling:

Judo
Brazilian jiu-jitsu
Wrestling


Why are these the most effective? They are competitive sports as well as martial arts. Meaning you can actually practice what you learn against people who also fight as a hobby. Thus when you fight someone who isn't used to fighting and are just picking a fight because they are drunk/angry then you probably will have as much of an edge as you can have.

DISCLAIMER: EVERY FIGHTER IS SHIT WHEN IT COMES TO BEING SUCKER PUNCHED. YOU WILL GET YOUR ASS KNOCKED OUT AND NO MATTER HOW MUCH TRAINING YOU HAVE YOU CAN ALWAYS GET SEVERELY HURT AND PERMANENTLY INJURED BY JUST A SINGLE PUNCH AND THE RESULTING CRASH.

Now, which to pick? Honestly, I am a fan of Judo. The reason being that 9/10 a street fight is essentially a randy swinging at you as much as he can before you both clumsily fall to the ground and someone gets rekt. Most fights are not a one punch knock out compilation on youtube. That being said, usually the first one to hit the ground is usually the first one to lose. Judo focuses on throwing and sweeping people to the ground. All Judo classes will also give you some training in striking. Judo is particularly effective against "tough guys" who like to shove and push you (assault you ie defending yourself) giving you a lovely opportunity to throw them to the ground. Never under estimate how much it fucking hurts to be slammed to the ground. Especially on concrete or hard wood. Shit fucking hurts and knocks the wind out of you. Essentially you can win with one throw.

Now, that being said if you REALLY want to be a great fighter you should always pair a grappling with a striking. This pair is usually called "MMA" fighting or mixed martial arts, but most trainers who teach "MMA" will usually give you a watered down version of each.

BJJ (Brazilian jiu-jitsu) is a great martial art for once you're one the ground and submitting your opponent through holds (arm and leg locks with the threat of breaking). Mix in punching and you have a ground and pound that will fuck anyone up.

If you are a fan of punch, then go with boxing. If you like powerful kicks go with Kyokushin (most people do not even know what kyokushin karate is and if you find a dojo that describes it at such more than likely they will be legit but always do research). Muay Thai is a great mixture of both. Muay Thai is in my opinion the most "dangerous" of the three striking. It is relentless and gives a feel of really getting hit. I only choose Kyokushin because it is full contact, all punches can only go to torso, kicks can go to any location but the head can only be hit by kicks. Thus you get a lot of practice in judging whether or not that sweet ass amerikick to the head is really worth it. Kyokushin also focuses a lot on leg kicks. That may seem dumb, but when I say leg kicks I mean kicking so hard your thigh or calf simply goes out and you fall from lack of mobility.

Basically Muay Thai is punching and kicking with a more boxing oriented training and Kyokushin is a Japanese based Budo training. Honestly I think BJJ and Muay Thai fit better and Judo and Kyokushin go better together just due to their cohesion in origin.

Then again this is biased as fuck since I am a practitioner of Kyokushin and Judo.

So I just turned 19 and I'm sitting here, thinking about my life. I don't have any real friends, i don't think I even know what a real friend means?.
Anyway, I'm just sitting here, smoking weed, not doing anything at all. I don't have a job nor do I care to get one, I guess. I mean, it's not like anyone accepts me anywhere? nobody did at school, nobody does at home, not even my friends accept me, so what is the fucking point?
So, anyway, I'm sitting here, smoking weed, and thinking fuck it all, I mean, it's not that I want to die or anything, but the problem is that I just don't give a fuck anymore.
I guess this is the point that I decide what to do with my life.

My one doctor looked at me when I said my shoulder hurts and I told him a few things that bother me and he said that I probably have long head of the biceps tendinitis. I accepted that but after doing more research, i can find the exact point of main and its where i circled here. This is rather far from the biceps tendon, and I havent been able to heal and ive had this problem for 8 months or so. I think it has something to do with the pec minor. Is it wrong of me to try and find another doctor that will actually do tests on me or something so I can findout the exact problem so I can rehab it? Because long head of the biceps tendon rehab might be vastly different than where i circled. I am not even sure what the problem is, but I really believe its the pec minor tendon or something.

So last night i was under my calorie goal, hit all my protein for the day, and was craving some sweets to spike my insulin before bed for maximum growth and recovery gains while i sleep.
What I discovered is, I believe, the most potent bulkan food ever

>mix butter and coconut oil (pure fucking calories - with sat fats for test and hormones)

Edible cookie dough. You can add an egg if you want.

This shit is literally pure carbs and fats, and about as caloric as food can get.

So i've been going to the gym for 1 month and do normal beginner routine but i also wanna lose weight faster
So i go on the treadmill for 15+ min, every fucking time i finish ,i get this fucking red rash on my legs and it hurts like hell

I have seen a fair amount of contradiction on this board on this subject so I want to get a consensus.

The sticky seems to act as if they are one of the same but the board seems to advocate different means for each end so i have a few questions

1. Do you lift for aesthetics, strength or health?

2. The sticky says cardio is more related to health and less to aesthetics or strength but many posts have linked it moreso to aesthetics what is the case?

3. Is there a technique difference between aesthetics and strength, people irl and this board has given me contradictory information about this. (If i was going for aesthetics would it be less weight more reps or?)

4. Is the diet bulking cutting thing a meme or what is your take on dietary limitations?

Hey man I'll try to help you.

1. aesthetics, strength and health in that order. Currently going low reps for strength though.

2. I guess low reps high weight is strength and high reps low weight is cardio, inbetween that there's the balance where you gain strength and endurance. Time-under-Tension being a word that I heard being thrown around.
From my experience though, strength ultimately makes you bigger.

4. Bulking means maximum gains, but also lot of fat gain. Cutting means lower gains but lose body fat,gaining aesthetics.
If you do a clean bulk, you could also just forgo that, raising musclemass without gaining fat, but that's not an easy thing to do. There's a reason everyone Bulks and then cuts.

Rereading my post it sounds like i have never been to the gym but in reality i am just a few months in and am looking for input mostly spurred on because i started a clean bulk today and am wondering where the memes meet the facts as far as aesthetics go, basically i dont kick over busses for a living so it is aesthetics>health>strength for me

Hey /fit/, I am moving soon and that means I need to find a new gym. There are a few gyms that will be nearby to me: The Edge, LA Fitness, and Anytime Fitness.
Any recommendations?

This is currently my diet. I weigh 220 lbs and I'm trying to bring my body fat down. Currently eating 1700cals a day. I'm eating two servings of oats (carbs), two serving of raw almonds(no sodium, fats) and one pound of chicken (protein). been doing this for about two weeks now and have noticed results. I also take a multivitamin (rainbow light) and a vit D supplement (natures way) for the micronutrients. should i continue this way or should i replace one or both supps for vegetables? and if so which veggies should i start consuming

yes replace the multi for vegetables. buy two a week. i would say any leafy green like spinach and then a colorful vegetable so red cabbage, carrots, squash, beets broccoli, cauliflower. replace the almonds with some greek yogurt and add a fiber supplement and keep the vit d.
