don't cheap out when you buy a bar, look for good reviews and a nice warranty. prices vary a lot anywhere from $300 to lol rogue go fuck yourself. if you buy cheap plates you get cheap quality- nasty burls, cheap paint, sloppy fit, inaccurate weight. bumper plates are ridiculously expensive
decent plates are around $1.5 per lb

If you can afford rubber coated plates get them. It decreases the clinking noises that can annoy your wife or children which leads to bitching (if you live alone the fuck it and do whatever).
I got a power rack on woot.com. It's worked well. Get some dumbbells that fit Olympic plates if you need to save money.
There's a lot of DIY stuff out there. If you are handy then look up some how tos before you buy anything. My home gym was about $1300, but that's about what I could afford. I am constantly improving it; it's a process, not a one time purchase.

Hey, /fit/. I just got a gym membership, but it's just an express membership as I can't afford the full one. The express gym doesn't have a regular squat rack, it's a Smith Machine. I've heard these are terrible for squatting, and with SS I'm not sure what I can replace barbell squats with. Any recommendations?
you can squat in the smith machine, they're less effective than 'real' squats but people exaggerate how bad they are. Just don't go heavy all at once and make sure you go nice and deep you have no excuse not to... OR, start off squatting with dumbbells. Goblet squats are aight.

do what you can with what you have. google "full depth squats smith machine" youll find info on how to get a good range of motion.
The bar moves in a specific direction so make sure your form is right otherwise it'll land in an awkward position. I started at PF with their smith machines and saw results, but I had to go ass to grass to get much more than I would out of the leg press.
