Swinging an axe all day, while lifting a heavy fir shield. It'll tire you out and the only way to cope would be to grow stronger. As I understand it, the best way to win in a hack and slash Shield wall is to be stronger than the enemy. That way you can stay standing and push and take blows with the shield. Get strong or die trying. They had to be muscular. Chris Duffin's shoulderok is based on ancient Indian club swinging to build strong shoulders and mobility. Swinging and axe or sword is not very different.
They ate dairy, bread, eggs, fish, peas, beans, meat, fruits. Good food for gains.
Also from rowing all the time and eating like this they would have monster sized backs. And if you have a good base like a strong back, then it's way easier to build up the rest of the muscles, in my opinion. Like building a house on a stable ground, big back leads to more gains all over. They would grow traps, lats and probably deadlift strength from putting their legs into rowing. Shield wall pushing is a great chest builder. All kinds of swings develop the triceps. I heard also from a chiropractor student that one builds muscle the best way using not time under tension but explosive movements, like jumps. And all combat sports are explosive. No doubt did the vikings do a lot of fist fighting, wrestling and tests of manhood.

I work as a Preloader at UPS, a little like your job.
I unload trailers, which means I lift a few thousand packages of the ground or stacked in top of each other and slide them down a roller conveyor. Most are bit too heavy but I get my fair share of ugly shit and heavy crap.
I feel like it does me good for a basic workout. Honestly its really just a series of squat, grab, lift, set, with a lot of turning around and walking back and forth. Its not so bad.
Just always always bend with your knees, back straight, opposite corners and all that shit.

Grappling is great in 1v1, kicks are excellent in open ground. Grappling will beat boxing in a fight in a car if boxer doesn't knock out in first few strikes or sucker punches. Grappling arts often have strikes too.
