I don't understand "lifting for yourself".
My only motivation to exercise is to get a girlfriend. I don't care about how my own body looks, only what other people think of it. A couple years ago I lost nearly 60 pounds, going from 240 to just above 180. I didn't feel any different, had no additional energy, and girls didn't treat me any differently. Eventually I gained all the weight back.
How do I approach it differently when I try to lose weight again?

I've actually wondered about this. I bench (what I thought was) 205 5x5. But there's another gym I've been to as a guest a couple times, and whenever I go there I've actually failed with (what I thought was) sets of 185. I attributed this to the barbells being thicker, thus weakening my grip. But I'm still skeptical about it making THAT much difference.

How much should I be tipping the spotter? This spotter at my gym came over and helped me out this morning with my BP. I gave him $3 cause its all I had in my wallet and he just looked at me like he was insulted. I really don't want to be "that guy" but I feel 2-3 is a reasonable tip. 5 seems to be pushing it for me, but if it's the customary amount here in the states I'll go with it.
I would typically tip 10-15% of the weight he spotted me. If he spotted me doing 45lbs, I would usually tip $4.50 or even $5.
