I've been to both PureGym and TheGymGroup, and they both serve the purpose of being a cheap gym with heavy things to lift and drop.
They don't have saunas, pools, or other fun extras, so be warned of that. The ones I've been to don't lack much in the way of equipment, but they tend to only have 1-2 of any machine or rack. Loads of dumbbells though. The PTs are pretty nice, and willing to help if you ask.
Well worth the money, assuming you really don't care about the lack of pools/saunas etc.

I've never worked out before in my life, I lost 30lbs doing a cut, and a friend of mine convinced me to go to Planet Fitness with him the other day.
Holy shit you guys memed me, there is literally nothing wrong with PF. Its a no judgement zone so I felt great working on the machines and lifting some lighter weights.
Other than the lunk alarm, which didn't even go off, there's no reason not to go here.

Yes. Ontario Canada class of '11. Food pyramid/nutrition stuff was taught all throughout elementary school and in highschool gym (mandatory credit) they took us to a weight room and made us bench (with a smith machine) as well as some other exercises.
