I'm a 170 lb, 5 ft 3 female and want to lose weight as fast as possible without completely starving (though I might do a little of that too). I'm getting mixed results when I try to figure out how many calories I should be eating a day to lose 2 lbs a week. One source says 500, another says 1000. That's a huge difference, which one is correct? I'm confused. I've been eating 800-1000 calories for a little more than a week but I'm wondering now if that's too much. I'm extremely sedentary and I want to lose weight before I start working out. I know everyone's going to recommend I work out, but it's so much easier for me to just not eat and then once I lose weight I'll feel more like working out.

Eat a 500 calorie deficit. There is no quick way to loose weight other than surgery or fasting. Both of which are stupid.

Also you don't want to work out when your fat?

You're not going to make it.

I'm a novice lifter (2ish months). I just hit 60lb on my squats and I'm getting pain in my left knee. What's wrong? I don't have any history of knee injury and I was fine squatting lower numbers.

Try stretching your quads or foam rolling them. I was having similar knee pain, especially going down stairs and sitting down in chairs, and I started to feel fine after stretching.

Could also be form (not getting deep enough into your squat) but likely is tight muscles.
>>
>>42216883
But this is a sharp pain in my joint though. Its not the muscle.

It may be bad form putting too much weight on my knee, I guess.
>>
>>42216892

Do you stretch your quads? If not, try doing that first before diagnosing yourself with some sot of ligament injury.

If you do stretch and you don't think it's a muscle problem, you should probably re-evaluate your form. Make sure your feet are turned out 30 degrees when you squat as well, which is the best on your knees.

Honestly though, if you are new to lifting in general then the problem is likely the fact that your muscles are not used to lifting and you need to stretch. You're not doing much weight at this point so I wouldn't worry about a serious injury of any kind.

Hey /fit/brehs, it has come to my attention that you guys are very health conscious, and like to stay away from chemicals in your food. One of the most common chemical substances found in food is dihydrogen monoxide.Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO) is a colorless and odorless chemical compound, also referred to by some as Dihydrogen Oxide, Hydrogen Hydroxide, Hydronium Hydroxide, or simply Hydric acid. Its basis is the unstable radical Hydroxide, the components of which are found in a number of caustic, explosive and poisonous compounds such as Sulfuric Acid, Nitroglycerine and Ethyl Alcohol.
For more detailed information, including precautions, disposal procedures and storage requirements, refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for Dihydrogen Monoxide.

Many of your favorite mass gainers, protein shakes, prepared meals, pre-workouts contain this extremely common and potentially poisonous chemical. Right now, chances are you have a concentration of DHMO in your body that is 3/4 of the lethal dose. Tread very carefully and always read the ingredients list on your supplements/food/nutritional implements etc. and learn as much as possible about them.

Hey, /fit/. Could I trouble you for some help? I've read the Sticky, though I can't say that I understand it that well yet.
I'm not particularly fat, at least relative to others I've seen, and I'm still fairly young. (I'm 20 and I've been 105kgs for a few years. Mostly fat, can't run up a hill without being out of breath. Terrible posture.)
Was wondering how you all got started, and what motivated you to take that step. I can't seem to bring myself to start, let alone work up the courage to actually do it in public. It's like writer's block, only pathetic and it doesn't make any sense.

Tl;Dr I guess I'm looking for inspiration, or reaching out for beginner help. Maybe a little advice from someone else who had something like a Social Anxiety Disorder and got fit through it. I don't know man, I don't have anyone to talk to this about.
Pic unrelated, though I guess it is loosely.

You start when your desire to improve yourself becomes bigger than our desire to stay the way you are. We can't give you this. You must create this within yourself. Being /fit/ is a lifestyle change, not something you do once or twice.

One piece of advice that helped me is this: No one cares. No one cares about what you're doing. You think that people are judging you for the amount of weight you're doing? They're not. That's you being self centered. The truth is that most of the people there probably started at where you are. No one is born fit. If you put in the work, you'll get the results. The people who intimidate you at the gym just put in more work than you.

I'd tell you that I hope you succeed, but honestly, I don't care. In fact, I don't want another newfag in the gym, cluttering everything up. It's up to you to work past your weakness.

That's fair enough, I suppose. I think I'd prefer someone not caring at all over the other two alternatives anyway.
I wasn't talking about the gym specifically, in fact I'd never be able to stomach going there. I was looking for something like examples or advice. Personal stories of overcoming your insecurities or things to avoid, stuff like that.

Let's just say in theory then. What if your desire to improve dwarfs the desire to stay the same, but an outlying and personally insurmountable factor prevents the improvement regardless? Whether directly or indirectly, consciously or subconsciously.
What advice would give someone stuck like that?
>>
>>42216737
What factor are you talking about here? Why wouldn't you improve yourself if you want to?

Yeah it doesn't, nofap is fun and horny for the first 7-10 days but after that you stop feeling horny and your dick becomes quite weak and even after you fap its just a bit meh, you have to start fapping a lot to get it back, so i wouldnt recommend it.

How do you guys keep your ass/upper thigh/crotch area smelling fresh? Hard-mode: no Gold Bond, no Febreeze, and no antiperspirant.

Those areas never technically smell for me, but I sweat a lot down there, and after a day or two my jeans smell really sour in those areas. What's the best way to combat this?

Recent highschool graduate here, got kicked out and am living on my own so am a poor fag atm. Despite this I would like to start going to the gym. There's a place right next to my work that charges five bucks for two weeks membership. If that sounds too good to be true, that's because it is.

It's one of those gyms that tries to rope you into contracts and shit, there's a 44 dollar sign up fee if you don't want to commit for a whole year, and theres no squat rack because "it's a 24 hour gym and we can't have people hurting themselves when there isn't any staff in".

However, since I'm just starting out I'm thinking of biting the bullet, paying the 44 dollar sign up fee, and just squatting in a Smith machine. I've heard that Smith machines are bad since they don't train muscles in stabilizing free weight, but is this of utmost importance for a beginner? Would it be reasonable for me to use this gym as a starting off point?

I really wanna start hitting the gym but I can't afford that much. What do you think /fit/?

You've got bigger fish to fry than getting a gym membership right now, if $44 is a big expense for you then I would strongly recommend getting your financial situation in a better place and just do calisthenics / bodyweight stuff until you can comfortably afford a real gym, not some bullshit chain.
>>
train your legs by walking 5 miles each day. along your walk, walk into each store and ask if they are hiring. if they say no, continue your walking exercise. if they say yes, then take a break from your walking exercise and apply for a job right then and there. repeat this until your wallet starts making gains, then you won't have to ask stupid fucking questions
>>
>>42216128
If I were in your shoes I wouldn't give up on the idea of working out, but I'd definitely forget about the gym for the time being. Focus on things you can do for free, running, calisthenics, fixing your diet. Get a better handle on your financial situation before dropping money on the gym.

If some smaller muscle groups are not optimally trained by compound movements, does that mean they don't contribute to strength in those movements?

do you have big, manly hands? or small girlhands? also what barbell do you like to use.

http://www.choosehandsafety.org/choosing-hand-tools/hand-tool-size

"A person's hand size is measured by the length of their hand. A British Study found that hand sizes for males range from 6.25" to 8.1" with an average hand size of 7.44".[1] Female hand sizes overlap, but are generally somewhat smaller, with an average size of 6.77". Hand tools are frequently designed for the "average male" hand.

To figure out the length of your hand, measure the distance from the fold in your wrist below the palm to the tip of your middle finger when your hand is flat. In this photo, for example, the hand length is about 7.25" (or 7-1/4").

You can use your hand size to determine your grip size."

Having broad/thick hands is a lot more important than having long hands. Although ideally you would have both.
