Appreciate the feedback. I only had a telephoto on hand, so there wasn't much avoiding there.

How would you suggest I improve on the composition? Going full manual (lens) was tricky since I didn't have much practice on using it.

anytime dude, its good you take criticism fairly well, thats a good indicator of someone who really wants to learn this stuff. Now, im working on bare minimum here to try and fix anything, but PIC RELATED is how i wouldve cropped and edited. Its ok to have a color/tone to dominate your photo, but on the left, you are going overboard and str8 into instagram land, just avoid filling your blacks with in your face colors.

Now, for composition, the only thing i could see helping any of this was to crop very tightly right onto the device, that being the subject of the photo. "but why crop square? isnt having your subject in the middle of the frame bad?" not if you can balance and justify it being in the center. You see, since the dudes hand is right over the device, there is no need to showcase the rest of him and i cropped him out. that and his arm leading out of the bottom right corner attempts to create some sort of composition, again, its a very dull photo to begin with so i tried my best in under 4 minutes to fix any of it

I can see the difference (aside from the obvious, I mean I can see what difference your edit makes). Much appreciated.

I definitely notice I tread towards instagram land quite often and I do want to try to avoid it (it's such an easy way to lap up "artistic cred" with people who don't focus on photography as intently).

As for the crop, I haven't even considered the fact that the dude himself wasn't necessarily the subject, so it was okay to crop him. My justification was "Well, he's the DJ here, so...", but you raise a valid point and I'll keep that in consideration for the future.

At the very least, I don't have anything against cropping or composing into the center, so long as its justified.

(for the part of the "dull photo" or "boring subject" thing, of all the photos I took this one felt the best to critique since I want to photograph along this vein of people and modern technology. I have a thing for that "techno aesthetic". Might as well practice with garbage than not practice at all lol)
