budgetcore
>>9328897
What brand is that?
>>9329567
modern shimano looks awful- all edgy and contrasty and busy. I prefer the gentle lines and plain graphics of 90s shimano
i don't know my campy but i think they're probably the prettiest of modern groups
>>9329667
I still prefer campy too, and as for shimano I probably hopped on a hype train around durace (dislike all other even mtb sets)
>>9329383
my buddy has a vintage team fuji with that group
super sexy
>>9329664
Thonet. It's a $77,000 bike made only to promote the company. They usually only make furniture.
Oh boy, sure is basic in here. Stick to clothes /fa/
>>9329667
Because shiman markets to out of shape 40 year olds who wear oakleys and are super into high school football/ watching football

>good design is functional
Good design has a goal and achieves it. I like Rams but people who take his word as gospel are retarded.
>>9328868
>>9330682
I don't take rams as gospel, though I do like his style and ethos, but that tape measure really is horrible. it's pretty much useless for measuring anything that isn't at your desk, secured and under a few feet long. If you're claiming that the tape measure pictured achieves the goal it has, perhaps it should aim a bit higher.
>>9330756
>If you're claiming that the tape measure pictured achieves the goal it has, perhaps it should aim a bit higher.
I'm guessing the design of that tape measure was motivated heavily by aesthetics considering it's a blomus design and it's only like 10 feet long. I've used one before and they're perfectly functional for smaller tasks. So yeah, I think it achieved it's goal, it sacrifices some functionality for aesthetics, but the aesthetics were probably important to the company since they're known for their design.
If all product designers only valued function we'd have a bunch of shit like this.
Any Thinkpad X,W, or Z

I love these so much
>almost fucking nothing is effay in this thread
>>9331019
Your kitsch lounge from Ikea isn't effay.
>>9331016
That seems worse than a normal Lodge.
>>9331044
That's because it is. A normal round iron skillet already has a pour spout on the side of it. Shapes like that are just for show.
>>9329086
I love the defined angles on the lamp, really pleasing to see
>>9330944
And yet, you've posted a T510.
>>9330987
That's sexy
>>9329579
i hate how people with no furniture design background try to cash in
irregular sizes and heights for all of their nonsense because no proper training
>>9328875
probably has a huge amount of wasted space given that the spherical shape goes to the bottom (which should be flat with minor gripping so it's FUNCTIONAL holy shit). this is "design" with quotes at it's worst. also everything here seems to be sheet metal that is pressed, the way the case distorts with the hex screw tapping is painful, painful like a public restroom toilet paper dispenser kind of sheet metal, and the retaining tab evidently shows no tinkering or designing. *takes seat*
>>9331342
it's stamped, looks to be brushed stainless
looks to be 4 series by the hue (the one that rusts in standing water) and the magnetic kind aka just a LITTLE bit of nickel in the steel unlike the better 3 series L stuff for low carbon
also it looks like the die in which they stamped the sheet just had an inset for the screw and the horrid designer just used a standard beveled head furniture bolt rather than a machine head bolt
but lets be honest
/fa/ is filled with 18-19 year olds who have never actually drafted, fabricated, or restored anything in their life
so stuff that seems blatantly obvious to people who have hobbies that require building shit and look at it like "oh...thats just badly designed" have that experience
/fa/ does not have the experience of looking at various well designed items.
the just kind of go on flash sale sites and buy anything made in china that looks cool
in their mind if it kind of sort of looks like an apple product than it's great
who's arne jacobsen?!
>>9328886
corners, jeez, that would cause so much accidental stuff. maybe a guard slightly more than the height of the button travel for the keys around the edge would help slightly
>>9329667
i agree, ultegra 6500 & DA ~85-00 is fuckin beautiful up and close, the crank arms look cnc'd because how well they attach to the gears but looking closer inspection they're somehow forged and polished
>>9331359
>the crank arms look cnc'd because how well they attach to the gears but looking closer inspection they're somehow forged and polished
okay you're literally just throwing out buzzwords.
a cnc machine is just a mill okay.
it's a computer controlled mill
so forging, casting and billet are various methods of describing how raw material prior to milling is delivered.
polishing, painting and brushing are various pronouns that described how something was finished
it is entirely possible for something to be a forged, cnc and polished item...
here is an example:
ar-15 lower receivers are forged aluminum
here is how JD machine Tech of san diego California receives it's RAW product, an ar-15 lower receiver forging
>>9331338
when will a sheep post some of rick owens' maison et objet shit lmao
>>9331346
whats some /fa/ things to cook sieg?
>>9331371
yeah i just assc cnc with "very well fitting", ashamed to say as a person who orders random shit to order, whatever
perhaps the right phrase would have been QC because anon gets ocd pissed at irregular gaps in seams
what do y'all think about phillipe starck? attached is his most famous design frankly 'coz he is a kitsch POS
>>9331400
every brand that produces anything has been through a qc process
when you order something from a restaurant and you lift up the top piece of bread to see if they followed the no mayo request you made
you just did a QC check...
the ic!berlin hinge is fucking great in terms of getting functionality right for glasses. fixes so many solutions and doesn't break as easily as the MYKITA hinge. it's a mystery as to why two of the designers of the ic!berlin hinge decided to leave and design a hinge as shitty as the mykita hinge, which leans more on looking good (on the outside) and being able to fit on a thinner package (via the lite collection) than durability
>>9331417
you win anon, glass is everywhere on the ground and there is no firetruck in sight in the soon to be jew-less germany of 1938... do you go to cooper or carnegie mellon or something
>>9331431
i just don't like stupidity in general
there is a specific term that you're referring to but literally used every buzzword you could think of trying to discuss design/production it just made you look stupid
>>932888
how do you brake.
>>9331419
I have these goat glasses

ramen from scratch
middle eastern food
venison with foraged berries and mushrooms
>>9332242
ramen is a low end food item in japan
konjac natural based noodles in sometype of fusion dish would be good
but honestly /fa/ doesn't seem to know much about anything since they're on the college kid diet
>>9332242
what makes ramen /fa/ but not other pasta?
>>9332264
>ramen is a low end food item in japan
>this guy
idiot
>>9331406
No, bad. Put it down.
That thing is almost non-functional. Form over function creates beautiful, useless art.
It's not a goddam product it's a statement to place carefully in your kitchen.
Phillippe starck wants to be Christopher dresser and alessi sucks big stylised testicles.
Disagree and il fight you irl.
Swear on me mum.
>>9334154
People value different things in their products. Starck clearly values form and play more than function. There's a time and place for both approaches. The sooner you accept that the sooner you'll stop getting your panties in a bunch over people liking things you don't like.
>>9332264
fucking hell sieg why are you an incompetent autist
>>9330636
>sharperimage-core
>>9328868
You should pick up, "Usefulness in Small Things" by Kim Colin and Sam Hecht. It's a collection of essays and photographs on a collection of mass produced objects that are particularly interesting in design. It has a lot of beautiful content and some cool perspective. Plus the introduction by Paul Smith gives it some fashion design perspective.
>>9334154
>useless art
>>9331406
so you purposefully post a celebration of poor design in a good design thread?
and expect us to pat you on the head and tell you good boy
One of my surprise favourites
>>9330878
dieter rams valued function over everything and his designs are beautiful thanks to that
the sacrifice of functionality for aesthetics -especially in the case of that tape measure- isn't necessary, nor beneficial, imo. the tradeoff you describe that's exemplified in the tape measure wouldn't have been necessary with knowledge of or experience with a tape measure, imo
form without function is literally useless garbage

Old logos vs. new logos.
>>9343067
It's easy to overlook them, but the little things make all the difference.
>>9343069
It's interesting to see how designers adapt old logos to modern design trends.

picked up these original Knoll Bertoia chairs over the summer. Got 4 of them for $200

Fuck, that's beautiful, I want it but can't justify spending $155 on it right now.

W2C used /fa/ furniture?
Or would I just be better off building my own since I like rough minimalistic design anyways? I have access to a ton of workshops with woodworking and metalworking equipment, also have a bit of welding experience too.
