if you dress in expensive fitted clothes people might think youre a quirky hobbyist or something. mostly i just feel like an autist if i ever take any of mine out in public.

Only if it's like a family heirloom or maybe if you're like a serious timepiece collector. At least with a watch it's actually more convenient than checking your phone, thus breaking the phone fidget/security-blanket syndrome. This seems like it would be come another fidget and burden in its own right, and keeping it chained wouldn't work with a lot of fits.

I think it's helpful to have an actual watch for the visual representation of time. When checking your phone and seeing a number, it's not the same as seeing a physical representation of the passage of time.
A pocket watch isn't as practical, but the things are works of art and marvels of engineering. I have a verge fusee from 1775, over 200 years old and still functioning. The parts are made of gold and silver, the metals carefully heat treated to be blue and resistant to corrosion, and the movement, the pieces on the inside of the watch that are never even seen, are beautifully engraved. Nothing we produce today is meant to last a decade, let alone centuries, I find that incredible. The fact I paid $250 for this thing is even more unbelievable, when that will barely get you an entry level mechanical wrist watch these days.

I want one, where do I get a cheap and reliable piece?
Honestly, smartphones remind me of modern-day pocket watches, seeing how many people use them to tell the time.

They kind of are now that I think about it I haven't seen many people wearing watches at all lately.
They remind me of that one Hey Arnold episode...

i would go to ebay and search for elgin/waltham/hamilton pocket watch. they'll say if they're running and you'll generally pay $80-150 for a classic century old piece. Art deco pieces from 1920-40 are pretty nice looking and reliable, the newer they are the less likely you'll need to get them serviced. I bought a 1897 watch 2 years ago and it ran a bit fast, lasted years before I needed to get it cleaned. Look around and see what you like.
You could get something much newer, I think even longines and tissot have made a low end pocket watch for the hell of it but they're usually over $200 and while they'll probably function longer and more accurately without needing to be serviced, you lose out on the provenance.
