I tried to see what face my shape is so that I can pick a new haircut but depending on how much I zoom and how far the camera is my head changes from a watermelon to a sideways watermelon

Two distance make sense for this. Either have the camera at a distance someone's face recognition kicks in, which is about 3m from the subject if I remember correctly. Or have camera at a distance where you'd be holding a conversation with someone, which is a more intimate perspective.
Perspective change with distance, not with how much zoom you put in. Zoom to crop as you see fit. Selfie distance is too close.

Personally I'd go with conversation distance.
