What are some basic things to have in my wardrobe to start building it?

I'm a former fatty who's gone from a size 34 waist to a 28. My calves are huge from lugging around an obese body for years, so finding slim pants is a chore. The only cut that I know of that works is Levi's 508, which they stopped producing, and I can't find any with my inseam and waist size anywhere online.
