>[serger optional?]
>Is it necessary to own a serger?
In the beginning a serger isn't necessary. You can practice different seam finishes to hide raw edges or use the zigzag if your machine has that function. A serger is only necessary if you're going to work with knits, in which case you should get one with a coverstitch features. It's yet another investment, so wait until you have finished some projects. It has it's advantages. The finishing on the edges look better and you sew faster with this machine. Regard the machine as an addition, not as a replacement.

What fabrics fall under knits? What are other minimal requirements of a serger? Any spelling errors?

good stuff anon. do you plan on sticking with the rick/julius/ann d aesthetic or are you planning to branch out?
>>
Been a while since I last posted, finished this a couple of weeks ago and now I'm trying to decide what to do next.

I've got a few hanks and balls of some nice hand dyed fingering weight merino wool and some alpaca from a local yarn shop that was closing down. Should have been between £8-15 for everything individually, got everything for £2-5, but now I have to decide what to do with it all.

Got a couple of balls of aran weight arriving this week with some new needles (gave my 5.5mm 16inch circular to a friend I'm teaching to knit so I needed new ones) because I agreed to make some hats for friends, and I should have enough left from those skeins plus what I have left from other projects to make some hats to donate to homeless shelters this winter.

I need to find a project for the fingering weight stuff though.

thanks alot man :) hoping to branch out into something more of my own aesthetic but within the target market of that group. So there'll be hints of such Designers in some of my works. For now it's just trial and error of trying to copy and emulate how they make particular items such as double layered tee's, Cargos, perfect amount of drop crotch, etc. and figuring out exact measurements - and when i think i'm ready i'll start making items that i've planned to do but just haven't done due to not enough experience

So one of my nicer pairs of sweatpants, Japanese made Lonsdale pants, has a piece of canvas (I think) sewn on the inside of the pocket. Think that's there for rigidity? Like to help prevent the cotton from getting ripped? Cuz I might add that to some of my work clothes if that's what it's for

K I just bought a 25 yards roll of milspec 1.5" wide flat elastic (got it cuz it was cheap)
Think I can cut it down to .5" wide to repair my old Nike anorak? Already removed the old stretched out elastic from the cuffs and waist and it's half an inch and one inch wide respectively
>>
>>12645830
Yeah, shouldn't be too bad. Just added elastic cuffs scavenged from an old jacket onto some jeans. Added qn elastic waist too, the waist is now ridiculously high but it's comfy
>>
>>12645891
Know how could I add elastic cuffs to something I own? Do I need ribbed knit material and flat elastic or is the rib knit good enough on its own
>>
>>12645931
Rib knit should be good enough. You've got quite a lot with 25 yards, so you could sew two pieces together along one edge and fold if you're worried about the thickness of the cuffs.

same guy that just posted the dump of all his collection clothes.

I got this 1998 AW Carol Christian Poell jacket in tan off of grailed originally but the condition was much worse than i thought. lots of flaking, oil stains and just overall use. so i decided to dye it black, pretty nervous since it was my first time ever dying leather ( or anything) and pretty happy with the results

1. tfw no CCP

But, that's me.
>>
>>12652444
i did previous research of the specific item that i was buying and it was supposed to be just a solid tan without the distressing and other marks left on it. it was beautifully aged but on some parts of the jacket it was very neglected and leather just looked worn out and unpleasing - more so on the rotton side than aging gracefully.

thought process of doing so was i was thinking more so of a clean palette for myself. adding in my own characteristics as im going to make this my everyday jacket

I've been turning an old pair of jeans into crust pants by following the terminal boredom guide for a month or so now (very little free time to work on them). Did y'all sew the patches on while you were wearing the pants? Lurking StP and some other old punk forums says that's the trve way to do it but its tough ;w;
>>
>>12652478
Fair enough. I can appreciate if parts of it weren't properly taken care of and the dyeing was to cover that up -- since it's hard to make up for that cosmetically.

Do you mean that it doesn't look round? In the picture the sleeve is folded and it looks like it's straight, but there is some curve. I suppose it has something to do with the angle.

that's not a good reference, i'll post a basic sleeve block instructions in a bit
the "angle" they're speaking on has to do with the inverse relationship between the cap height and width, if i remember that correctly
the curve shouldn't deviate much from a bell curve

Will I be fine with a $20 or even $40 machine?

Should I just do it by hand?

redoing cuffs is easy, you just place the cuff where it would be on the leg, then fold it back over on itself and sew. Imagine cuffing your jeans and sewing the very bottom ring, its essentially the same thing except with two pieces. I've added cuffs to jeans as well as an anorak.

I have a few pairs of jeans that I rarely wear anymore because they are a darker wash than I usually like. Is it fair to say that I can just throw them in the washer with some bleach and they will come out like this?

- Do I need to worry about ruining them?
- How do I know how much bleach to use?
- Is it possible for them to turn completely white? (I wouldn't want that).
- Is there anything I need to do in order to ensure that the color is distributed evenly across the jeans?
- Do I need to worry that the bleach will "lift" the color out and it will rub off on chairs, other clothes, etc after the jeans are dry?

I want them to look as close to [image attached] as possible. They're not selvedge denim.

pretty good, a bit off on the collar but man is it hard to stay within the seam allowance around the neckline
i'd shift the band's seam to one of the shoulder seams rather than the center back

for the hemming of the sleeves and body, are you serging the edge and then sewing it with a regular machine? it's looking like it's giving the lettuce effect

if using an overlock with a coverstitch, i'd recommend adjusting the differential dial
if using a lockstitch machine after serging, the lack of stretch from the lockstitch is causing that, and the only way to combat it this way is to use a little bit of interfacing
>>
>>12682302
I know that the neck band has to be shorter than the neck line. I don't know how good an impression a tshirt, lying on the floor without a body in it, gives of the fit of the collar. The collar doesn't stand straight up. I put the neck band at the center back so I know what the back of the t shirt is. Yes, I serge the edge and stitch it afterwards. Can't you iron that out?
>>
>>12682321
i wasn't speaking on the fit of the collar, but the actual sewing
there's a few spots where you strayed from the seam allowance between an eighth and a quarter inch
not that odd, i still notice that in my sewing, and tech packs in general give a tolerance of +/- 1/8"

for knowing which is the back and front, see the rough sketch i attached of how knits are notched

no, you can't iron that out
the lettuce is caused by the lockstitch pulling, since it has no give
coverstitches are used to hem knits because they allow for stretch by way of the overlock

So i actually bought some black straight fit jeans from sandro (they were cheap) because i wanted to start wearing wider pants. It looks not too bad overall but the biggest issue is the fabric that is too thin, it causes some horrible stacks around the knees and fucks it up.

Do you think this could save it?

Pretension means dishonesty. Maybe religion was not the best word to describe the feeling. Profoundness sounds like a better word? I'm not a native speaker. Looking at photographs from the earth taken from outer space or looking at the night sky while lying in bed, I ask myself how significant I am and what I'm going to do with my life. Is that odd to ask? Looking for direction, that's the idea. I don't see how capturing that feeling and other interests that amplify that, in fabric, is far removed from making your own clothes.
Rudi Gernreich designed the costumes for Space 1999. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09BzitMkUCw The costumes featured a coloured collar and sleeve. Willem Koopman was a hobo from Rotterdam. He was a promising cyclist in the sixties, but got caught with doping. That ended his career. He got heavily into drugs, suffered a psychosis and started to believe in aliens. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNZrTgadxiM On a more practical note, I want to carry more stuff, that doesn't fit in a small cycling bag, while cycling.
As for the embroidery, simple geometric figures. There is a book called Celestial Scenery by Thomas Dick that has some nice drawings. Regarding the human face, construct it from constellations?

What you mean like with traditional sewing techniques?

Depends on what you'd want to do, but the issue generally is it'll end up bulky if you're adding things like darts, or you can risk it unravelling.

Usually heavy knits are best altered by knitting.

Planning a new jumper, of the autumn/winter weight this time, and I've bought enough lettlopi to knit one up. Pretty excited about it, I've heard good things about lettlopi and I've also heard it's common to find twigs and grass that were in the sheep's wool when they were roaming the fields in Iceland.

I'll post pictures when I'm done, but it's not arrived yet so it won't be yet.
Haven't knitted anything too interesting recently (just a couple of hats) so I'm looking forward to doing another jumper.

Nah lettlopi is actually really decently priced which surprised me. I'd heard good things about it and assumed it'd run in a similar price bracket to Rowan yarns, turns out it's much cheaper and mine was on sale so it actually didn't come to much at all. Plus I'm short and skinny so I don't need as much to make a jumper that fits.

It's the hand dyed sock yarn that does you in so I have to limit myself on that or I could easily spend hundreds.

No shit anon. I mean literally no seems on the entire thing. Tube style. I don't know. I hate that I can't grab an image of exactly what I am thinking and show. Fuck it. I'll figure it out.

Tell me know. If I had a dark aubergine first layer long sleeve that colors would be decent for outwear? I am currently thinking a light or dark brown.

Functionally impossible.

You'd have to have seams where the arms join the body.

As for a seamless glove integration, it would have to be knit into the sleeve on the machine, and have fun paying out the ass to have that tooling set up and troubleshot.

Just like that was the idea. I figured. Thanks anon.

I'll check that out.

Working on some pants, will be finished tailoring soon. I took them in from a 10 to ~2, and chopped a few inches from the bottom.
