Suit general.
Tips, brands, and recommendations welcome!

Men's warehouse had some great entry level smart fabric suits. I like their looser fit, with room to breath and move.

The stretch in the fabric makes them much more comfortable.

all you need to know is, make sure the materials are there, get everything tailored, and if you're going to wear a watch it can't be a shitty 20 dollar watch or it has to look like its not a shitty 20 dollar watch, also your shoes need to be good or your suit falls apart.

SUIT PRO TIPS TO THE TEENS AND 20 YEAR OLDS OF /FA/ FROM A 28 YEAR OLD SEMPAI WHO WEARS THEM DAILY.

FIT

-Make sure your jacket isn't too short or too long. The back of the jacket should meet roughly where the bottom of your butt cheeks are.

-Be conscious of your lapel width and your lapel-to-tie width ratio. Your lapels and tie should be of matching width. Lapel and tie width is very dependent on your size and frame. For most regular sized younger guys, go with a 2.5 inch tie and lapels to match. This is one step slimmer than a very traditional tie width, but not slim enough to really be a "skinny" tie, which is more like 2.0 inch. If you are a bigger guy, consider 3.0 or 3.5.

-your trousers will probably need to be hemmed and should have no break or a half break. It's up to you but I personally prefer no break.

COLORS AND PATTERNS

-If you are getting one suit, get solid navy. Navy suits are versatile and go with both brown or black belts/shoes. Avoid black suits imho unless it's necessary. Avoid pinstripes and other patterns, they generally look bad or like something a Boomer would wear.

-Do not mix and match belt and shoe color (black belt brown shoes) and do not wear brown shoes with a black suit. Fuck this makes my eye twitch whenever I see it.

-Shirts should be in very pale, solid colors. Do not wear a shirt in a deep saturated color.

-Have fun experimenting with ties, but generally lean toward simple and use common sense. I personally only have solid and dot ties but you don't have to limit yourself to that.

I also recommend charcoal grey if you don't want a navy suit (although navy is an extremely good choice)

navy isn't an awful choice but i have to disagree here, i'd say if you only have one suit, make it a darker gray.
>>
>>12478101
>>12478167
Personally, I think grey is FAR more versatile than blue.

I get tired of hearing people preach the brown & blue over and over.
>>
>>12477893
I live in East Asia so a black suit is actually the most versatile. I prefer black suits anyway, so I'm happy.
>>
>>12478172
youre right on that, but i tend to see an equal distribution. people dont wanna stray too far from their comfort zone so its usually black - shades of grey - dark blues

>>12478167
Well, agree to disagree I guess, I just don't think charcoal grey is as versatile as navy. It doesn't work with as many browns. In addition to black shoes, a navy suit looks good with any brown from traditional to more walnut and its the only suit color that works with a more orange/tan color shoe and belt like the picture. Grey does not work with that color.

>How do you mean?

Black suits are the norm in China and Japan, though people too mix it up more than they used to. I've never been to Korea, so I don't know about them. A lot of casual clothes are also black and white. Denim and pink are popular with women.

There are pros and cons, but you can have a fully functional wardrobe with only black and white items.

Who makes a good pair of oxfords shoes? I have a rough idea of what to look for in quality dress shoes, but not the faintest idea of any brands to start with.
>>
>>12482108
Depends on what your standards are for "good." Allen Edmonds is generally considered a "good" entry-level dress-shoe maker. They're currently having a sale on their Dark Burnished Chili colored shoes, which you can get for ~$250 USD. That's essentially factory second prices for firsts quality, but if that's still a bit more than you'd like to spend, their factory seconds are also on sale down to $195 for 5th avenues. Aside from that, Meermin offers decent quality shoes starting at $175 and Jack Erwin is a similarly priced, roughly the same quality alternative. If you're in the EU, you may want to consider Loake's 1880 line. Lower quality but slightly cheaper options are Florsheim and Johnston & Murphy.

If you're looking for something a bit nicer than those, and don't mind spending 400+ on dress shoes, then you can check out Tricker's, Crockett & Jones, Enzo Bonafe, Cheaney, Carmina, Edward Green, etc.
>>
>>12482091
Very well. There doesn't appear to be a problem. You have a pocket square and shirt-cuffs showing, as well, so you have those advantages. If you want to, you could have a tailor take in the pants a little bit, removing an inch, or more or less, for the length.

If you're wearing a black suit, you only want to wear white shirts and a solid color tie.

For that tie, and especially a wedding, you'd be better off in a different suit. A middle-grey or patterned/non solid color suit would do well.
>>
So I'm a 22 year old slightly overweight manlet looking to invest in a versatile suit. This would be my first suit that I would use for job interviews, etc. So I don't mind investing 1k into a suit & fitting.

My real question is, I'm 5'5 and around 170 pounds. Should I try to lose twenty-thirty pounds first and then go suit shopping, or just go now, get it tailored to fit, and then get it tailored again to fit my slimmer body?

Also, what's a good versatile suit for someone like me? I was thinking a suit with a small pattern that forms a charcoal gray. However, I don't know what brand to go with. The most I'd like to budget is $2000.
>>
>>12484977
Lose some weight, get a much cheaper suit off rack then get it tailored. As long as the shoulders amnd armholes fit perfect off rack and everything else is close, it'll look bespoke after decent alterations.

Especially if you've not had a suit before, you don't want to spend above $300 for everything aknd can probably get better for cheaper.
>>
>>12484977
you have to be honest with yourself. Are you really going to lose some weight? How much time will it take you?
If you are really committed to lose some weight, congrats, and then just buy a cheaper suit. 30 pounds of weight difference are a lot of changes in a suit, so it won't be advisable.
The most versatile suit depends on our hair colour and skin tone. 1K is a lot of money for a suit, you are can find a lot of options. A LOT. So again, give us some more info.
>>
>>12485015
So yeah, I'm pretty committed to losing the weight over the course of a year. I've tried to lose a ton of weight in the past quickly by using diets, etc. But I've just decided that my best course of action would be to just fast until the afternoon and eat one large balanced meal.

As far as hair color and skin, I'm a pale white guy with brown hair, but my beard sort of grows out looking slightly lighter; since some of my hairs are more of an orange in hue. My eyes are a light blue.

>>12484994
Alright, so I should just hit up a mall then and get one of the suits from a Macy's type store instead, and then get it fitted the right way?

Should I trust someone who tailors the suits in a mall to give me valid pointers on what to look for in a suit's cut for my height and everything? What should I look out for in regards to a suit?
>>
>>12485031
For your colours a light grey would be nice, or a navy blue with some details in the fabric. Not patterns, but some detail in the same fabric. Check the materials. 100% wool, no blends. Two button jacket. A standard to narrow notch, no peaks. I prefer flap pockets.
Pleated pants if your thighs are big.
>>
>>12480464
The material is corduroy. Wes loves that shit. You can find some full corduroy suits at goodwill or your nearest second hand store sometimes
>>
>>12482091
zara-core suits are alright just prepare for it to only last a year before its starts falling apart. You could upgrade it by having the sleeves taken in a little bit (not shortened, thats something else. Length is alright in your case). Also taper your pants so they rest right were you ankle begins.

Tie's slightly too thin for your body size (your angle for the picture doesn't help).

Apart from that you look good, I'd say wet your hair slightly blowdry it and then get your hairstyle by using a big round brush then a slightly smaller from the roots upwards. Your hair will have slightly more volume but still looks natural which will help as the right side looks slightly off.

I'd also go with a slightly thicker belt with a less prominent buckle.

Lastly, it'd good to see your lower half as well; shoes and where the trousers end really helps with judging the how the suit trousers look.

I'm having trouble finding work clothes that fit well while also being conservative due to the fact that I'm fairly slim (5'11, 140lbs.). My family and friends tell me I look good in pants/blazers that are clearly too big for my proportions in part because I live in a part of the US where a slight break/no break on trousers is considered "too trendy" and in part because they're on the heavier side of the scale. I'm trying to maintain balance between "trendy" and "traditional" but it's extremely difficult to find clothing like that at an affordable price. I've looked at J Crew, J Press, Brooks Brothers, Charles Tyrwhitt, Gitman Vintage, Gant, Club Monaco, Bonobos, Epaulet and most of the other entry-level stores but haven't found anything that fits well and doesn't go beyond my budget (~$200 per pair of pants). Is my only going to be bespoke/MTM like Luxire or Proper Cloth?

Tl;dr
w2c wool or cotton dress trousers for ~$200 that have a medium rise, and a slim but not heavily tapered leg, preferably around a 15" opening?

Oh shit anons, made a new thread because I saw this in the archive, didn't know it was active.

Alright anons, so I have a summer wedding to attend in California that has a semi-formal dress code. I'm fairly young so all I have in my wardrobe is a black suit, and I'm too poorfag to get another one right now. I'm pairing it with a light grey shirt under but still need a tie. Is there anything I can pair with it to lighten it up so it doesn't look like I'm attending a funeral? I kind of wish I went with navy because last time I used it was for prom which was pretty lax with dress code.

Originally I was just thinking a clean black tie (in cotton/wool/linen so it's flat and not sheeny and gross) because I'm obsessed with minimal looks. Or a textured tie like they stock at j.crew. Then I saw some floral ties that would lighten things up, but only found ones I like in blue, would that go with a black suit though? I'm probably going to try to thrift one first though.

You can get Calvin Klein collection/jil sander/raf Simons/z zegna/saint Laurent fused stuff for only $700-800

all the fags replying to this didn't read >>12477893. the tie width is fine. personally i would have chosen a more interesting tie but it looks fine with that solid purple-red, actually i think it's a very innocent fit that matches your face and stature. a niche floral fragrance would be good on you to bring the innocent look to the finish line. some women unironically like that. think cougars for instance

if i have a medium-ish tone gray suit, what color shoes, tie, belt, etc do i wear with it?

>I personally only have solid and dot ties

Solid ties will make you look like you're renting a suit for prom

Honestly Hermes ties are cheap, easy , maintain value and have a following where you can trade older worn out patterns for newer ones (I don't I just take my worn out ones and toss em on eBay)
>>
>>12490835
Pretty much whatever you want, with grey and navy anything can go well with them, though personally: black shoes (brown or burgundy is also good), purple tie, same leather color belt as shoes, blue or white shirt, and a pocket square that goes will with the tie (ideally the secondary or tertiary color of the pocket square should match the tie, though not a necessity). Again, all colors are good to go (theoretically), just use common sense and a bit of color theory. All that being said, it does come down to the situation you're wearing it in, darker colors and smoother fabrics for more formal settings, lighter colors and more textured fabrics for casual.
>>
>>12490847
I second this, the only solid color ties I wear nowadays are knit ones. Patterns and textures are a must for great style.

Is there any way to get a cheap chink bespoke suit without actually going to SEA?

Fused suit for $700-800? Suitsupplys least expensive stuff is only $400 and is half canvas.

I've tried and done so, but hand rolling is difficult as hell and especially on linen. Besides the wool is usually too thick to be used as a pocket square and there are only solid colors of linen, I want patters.

Jumping in, I'm also overweight - got the heaviest I've ever been in my life this semester, and I'm also trying to lose it off. However, I have an internship in about a week and a half so I had to buy an extra suit asap. I would recommend going for a dark gray, it was my first and has been my only suit up until now and it worked pretty well (business school student), thank god I still fit in it.

Considering all your factors; dropping weight within a year, young, only using suit for interviews, I would recommend you not dropping $1000 just yet. The longer you can hold out and getting a suit, the better since you're slimming down. Even if you drop 5-10, that may be a whole jacket size down, and definitely at least a pant size down (I'm an inch shorter and 5 lbs lighter than you btw). I got my first suit at Express for ~$275 after coupons, originally $400 but they pretty much give away coupons in their mailing list all the time. I got my second and most recent suit from Macy's for $300, originally $600 (100% wool), but got it on sale along with the menswear deal they had.

Honestly, if you're just doing interviews in your suit, normal people don't look for a certain brand. Definitely always look for good material, but I think you should find an entry-level suit, save some money and put it towards a new suit once you drop the weight.

yeah but suit supply's cut wouldn't be as clean as a z zegna

yeah made in mexico, yeah fused but doesn't look like a drop shipped piece of shit from china

general rule of thumb, avoid startup companies most of them are scams

meaning avoud "random clothing subscription" boxes, avoid "bespoke suits for $19.99 shipped!"

avoid that stupid app where you take a selfie and they claim to make a bespoke shirt for you
>>
>>12492783
I adamantly disagree, I own two of Suitsupply suits and I couldn't be happier. Their classic line is far more traditional and conservative than Zegna and I because it's actually canvased the quality is far better, not to mention will look better. Also, they are not longer a start up company and what's with the "meaning avoud 'random clothing subscription' boxes, avoid 'bespoke suits for $19.99 shipped!'" comment? I've yet to see any of those in their advertisements.
>>
>>12492798
do you own a high end suit to compare?
>>
>>12492798
things like trunk club

and that bonabos stuff

that run youtube ads and tv commercials

i can assure you that your half canvassed suit does not look as good as a zegna suit

i specifically compared z zegna to it as it's an entry level brand

but still shown

May be posting in a ded thread but fuck it

I've got a wedding in 2 weeks or so (UK) and it's relatively formal but not morning dress or the like. I don't have an appropriate suit that fits and am uni poorfag, so am going to wear a smart navy blazer and some smart grey chinos (sort of a nice very small grey/black blend) with a pale blue dress shirt, decent brown brogues and a white pocket square. However, I'm running into problems with the tie- I was thinking something navy with a slight pattern, maybe white polka dots or similar? I'm not sure if this would be too much blue with the shirt and blazer?

No, but we are not talking about high end suits, we are talking about entry level suits. Regardless, you can get MTM suits for that price range that are half canvased suits from a plethora of companies that aren't Suitsupply. All in all, I am saying you can get a lot more suit for $700+ that aren't fused, I just pointed to one company. Also, canvased suit do and will look better than fused, it drapes better and is more flexible, thus creating a better outline. Not to mention will last longer, as the glue will deteriorate faster than the wool and horsehair.

>>12494134
Small world eh? I used to bike all around the TWU campus, nice place, shame about the golf course though, was the only place I golfed at. Nice to see another Texan who's interest in suit fashion, makes me feel a little more comfortable.

>>12494993
It can work, but I like having a bit of color to make the ancient combination of a navy blazer and grey slacks a bit more interesting. Perhaps purple or burgundy? Check out the Tie Bar, their ties are quite nice considering the price. A quick tip to add, ideally your tie should be as wide as your jacket lapel width, makes it all proportional (you could add in your shirt collar width to that as well, it makes it /fa/ as fuck).

>>
>>12484840
i don't think that works on that jacket as the buttons close under the waist. i hate that style of double breasted jackets, still thankfully it isn't one of those 6x1 jackets
>>
>>12497449
It works, you're just taking away fabric from the sides and back, doesn't matter what style it is. It's also even more important on a double breasted jacket, as the extra fabric add "weight" to your waist (since it's not as streamlined as a single breasted jacket). By giving your silhouette more of a figure it mitigates that drawback.

I would say your choice between navy/gray depends more on what you're going to be using it for.

For me, I'm in law school and navy is a notch more formal (imo), so it works better for the industry. This isn't to say you can't wear a gray suit in a law firm, but the navy is more versatile for the job if you can only have one or the other.

But as for business, banking, and really anything else except for politics, I think navy and gray are interchangeable per taste.

Are all dress shirts near transparent or is it just because I'm not spending like 200 dollars for mine
>>
>>12500002
It's the latter, but you don't need to spend that much. Good quality shirts are usually either double layered thin fabrics or just thick. You can search around to find a good company, but I've found Suitsupply's stuff fits the bill perfectly for me.
