Post boots and stuff.

I'm looking at these four boots (from left to right, top to bottom: wolverine 1000 mile courtland, thursday captain, red wing iron ranger 8086, red wing iron ranger 8114)

thoughts? will the shiny finish on the thursdays wear down nicely? are red wings played out as fuck?
>>

I have the waterproof version of these, they're bretty gud. Almost as light as tennis shoes, intended to be worn by cops so you retain a lot of mobility but still get that nice boot protection feeling and I think they look pretty slick if you blouse your pants.

Also has a bloodborne pathogen resistant membrane so you can safely stomp on AIDS-ridden nigs.

Doc Martens are horseshit.

I got a pair fo 1490s in October, I kept them up with oiling, waxing, polishing and all the methods I found. I swapped the insoles, used a different pair of shoes around 3-4 times during the week, the whole ordeal. You know what happened a month ago? A hole. A fucking hole split up behind the toecap. After 6 months of usage. I got that place stitched at a local shoemaker, but just a month ago, another one split up right above my heel. I went to the shoemaker again, and I also ordered him to stitch all the other areas behind both toecaps to avoid further splitting. Altogether, the leather around the toecap, the sides, the ankles and heels is all crudded up and now, patched and stitched shut. The leather around the leg of the boot is nice and shiny, because I've kept it that way and it doesn't bend that much during normal usage, but nothing has seemed to help. I live in the city, I don't do long walks or anything. I'm gonna keep this pair, and I even copped a pair of 1460s at a local bidding-site for around 30€, but fucking hell. Is this what these people are confirming as "quality" nowadays? Were Docs ever durable? Do I need to splurge more on my Docs like with the MiE-model or should I just get a pair of memeboots next?

Pic related is the stitched are behind the toecap.

Taiwan, what do you fucking expect? AKA the boots that 99% stores here sell. I think there's one or two stores (online only too) that sell the British-made models, otherwise it's online or the official stores around the world. This pair was ""just""" 150€. Pic related is the damage after just one month (November, I think) into the boots, after around 2-3 weeks after I had broken them in.

for what it's worth, I bought a pair of 1k miles probably 6-7 yrs ago. Mine had no quality issues and are still holding up great even though I wear them in all the elements. I'm not aware of the control issues you're talking about, maybe it's relegated to their newer production. Just based on my old pair id recommend them though.

>>12478141
I don't have tornadoes but I have guidi pigskin backzips with a double stacked heel and they're so outrageous that I literally never wear them. I'd probably have the same experience with tornados. I'm not home but will try and remember to post a pic of them later today, they're beautiful boots.

Obviously a force was applied to the leather for it to just separate. Those kinds of things don't happen spontaneously, perhaps you just got the wrong width of shoe judging by the fact it split at where the toes would be.

Also chink quality.

As for the leather soled model, from what I've read they can be slippery if you don't wear out the leather sole on eg. concrete, bitumen first. I would expect them to be slippery on ice, however.

IDK man I want to believe this but brown is a lot more versatile. Black looks dressier and is more slimming but for every day wear I'd probably stick with brown.

I used to have a pair of tan Coach split toe boots that I couldn't wear with shit. They literally looked like wearing a pasty white dudes skin on my feet.

I got the boots sized at the Doc-store in SoHo. I normally wear a 43/44 and they didn't have half-sizes. Should I go 44 with good insoles (I'm thinking like Jalas FX2 from Varusteleka) from now on when buying these boots? When I tried 44 in the store, the shoes felt less painful to wear but also jiggled a bit when they were gently laced up and I was just walking around.

>meme pic inserted just for the sake of it.

Also possibly off topic but anyone know where to cop good derbies? I was thinking of visiting the redwing store in london to see if they have bigger sizes.

yes, they're typically benchmade- most English goodyear welt shoes branded as Ralph Lauren are made from Crockett & Jones, Edward Green or another equivalently high-quality shoemaker. Better than the corrected-grain leather Solovairs, MiE-Docs, and standard Asian-Docs are made of. Greasy leather is like nubuk, but it's closer to full-grain.
>>
>>12484688
I have about 6 leather shoes/boots from different makes and price brackets and have owned many more in the past, I never bothered studying the types of leather they've used which in a way is a bit lazy but it also means I don't really have a bias when I tell you these Solovairs are some of the best value (build and material quality wise) for money boots that I've had.

I only provided them with the most basic of boot care and the leather still looks and feels good, holds up great, remained stiff where it should have and imo so far only looks better as it gains mileage.

What is the general opinion on biker/engineer boots here? I tried a pair of brown, low-cut boots at a thrift store today. They fit me well, they felt really comfortable to wear but I wasn't digging the heel which was angled downwards, and I consider brown shoes to be reserved for a more "suitier" style. I already wear Docs, would adding a pair of black biker/engineer-style boots look out of place?

I'd love to own a pair of boots like these;
>flat sole, or atleast minimalistic in the design
>straight and flat sole, maybe with a normal tread
>no curved tips and downward angled heels
>round or a very neutral toebox, not spiky or boxed

Pic related, yay or fucking gay? They're a handmade pair (Finland) of boots. I know they're not as """"biker"""" as I've described but I'd pair them up with my moto-jacket and some black jeans.

I don't "dress up" with boots like those. My Docs are really shitty now, I keep them polished and I oil them but otherwise, they get the shit used and kicked out of 'em. I've fucked a girl bareback against some trash-cans in them, went to a ton of gigs and pits, ran away and fallen down a hill while drunk and in every way just lived in them. I still wear and take care of them, even when they've had around 4-5 patches stitched at a shoemaker to keep the cracks on the leather shut (two holes opened up, behind the toecap and over the heel-part). It just sucks that all this damage has occured just after a few months of use. Neverthless, I'll keep them up and shiny until the stitching or the sole craps out, but I'd like a second pair of leather boots and black engineer/motorcycle boots just make the inner-bootfag in me horny.

If I can't comfortably wiggle my little toe, should I exchange for half size up? They fit so perfectly for the rest of my foot, but I'm really not sure about my little toe. >I just wish the 1000 miles came with rubber soles instead of leather
Mostly a non-issue. Take them to a decent cobbler (though finding one is no small feat these days) and get a topy rubber sole protector glued on them.

It's what most people do (or should do) with shitty leather soles, as it's not as if they're oak bark tanned soles on a fiddleback waisted bespoke masterpiece.

Before the topy wears out in 5 years of hard wear, get them peeled off and replaced. Rinse, repeat. Means you can avoid total resoles for a time which is good since goodyearwelted footwear only has so many resoles and rewelts in them.

That being said, wolverine suck ass and are shitty quality in comparison to RW heritage (it's a matter of quality of materials). If you like the design of th 1k's more then whatever, but purely on quality of materials and construction RW's heritage line wins on this front.

When did the Wolverine quality issue become a thing, though?

/fa/ just months ago seemed to love these boots and no one ever spoke of poor quality. Is it a new production wave that has poor construction or something? Genuinely curious

Cuz if it is, Red Wing seems to have some boots (Blacksmiths and Beckmans) that I could get otherwise with really similar designs

>When did the Wolverine quality issue become a thing, though?
It's always been a thing.
I've not been on /fa/ for at least a year so perhaps standards have slipped since I last was here, or newfags have just gotten less discerning.

Wolverine 1k's are made with a cheapened method of construction that RW do not use (synthetic insole), preferring the tried and true traditional method that virtually all quality manufacturers use (full leather insole).
Also, RW owns its own tannery, and thus has final say on the quality of whatever leathers it uses. Wolverine buy their leather from elsewhere, and their horween chromexcel is inconsistent (as with all cxl, especially if the maker you get shoes from cheapens out on the grade and clicking): if you got a good batch with good clicking, then fine, all's well. If not then oh well, too bad so sad you'll suffer from potential longevity issues. That's how it goes with that particular leather.

Basically, if you don't notice the corner cutting or potential quality issues, or just don't care, they're a good enough boot. I also disagree with leather sole on that boot (I disagree with cheap leather soles anyway, it's either oak bark tanned or just use dainite), but I suppose it allows them to have a thinner sole profile for aesthetic reasons (and you can just topy it anyway).

Nevertheless, RW heritage line are objectively a better built boot. If you prefer the wolverine 1k's looks, then whatever, that's up to taste.
>>
>>12495153
>they're a good enough boot.
I'll add to this that they're a good enough boot provided you take care of them. You should take care of all your footwear, and that includes brushing after wear to get rid of microgrit that can contribute to cracks long term; maybe a wipe down if very dirty; trees to keep shape, help with drying and help to mitigate creasing (and thus, the inevitable cracking); conditioning every once and a while when needed; and of course: rotation. Not wearing the same the same pair day in day out, 12hrs days/7days a week and rotating a pair with anything else will prolong the life of the shoe and safeguard the health of your feet.

Even the shittiest shoes can last for ages if you care for them well, it's just that having something well made gives you greater leeway in this in my experience.

If you want wolverine 1k's or whatever, buy two pairs and rotate. Don't just buy one and wear them to death over 6months (6months being about the average amount of time it takes for those leather soles to need replacing, taking into account perhaps a fortnight's worth of rainy days of course).

When you wear boots/shoes with a high heel do you need a snug fit?
Like, if there's lots of room for your toes wouldn't you run the risk of sliding down into the toe box and the heels of your feet not resting in the heel of your boot?
I'm talking a slip-on boot.

i spent like 3 or 4 months putting 40 bucks in an envelope every monday til i had enough to go buy these. im wearing them right now. i love them. now that i have them all other chelseas look like shit. ive gotten a ton of compliments on them from a wide variety of people. my roommate is Australian and had his for 10 yrs before they got stolen from a locker. said they are the most comfortable things hes put on his feet, and after having mine for only a couple months i can see what he means. i spent all winter looking for other options, especially allen edmonds liverpools since there was an AE store in my city (philadelphia) and they are american made but the reality is there is very little to compare these to and its likelyto do with their shape from the one piece of leather construction. just keep saving. the only thing i can say that sucks is access to them is awful. i measured my foot multiple times and from all the online resources assumed id wear a 9. i ended up getting 6s - which i bought only after traveling to NYC to their only store in america. money is only money and saving causes no harm. the only reason i would say dont keep saving and buy these is if you have virtually no access to one of their stores and are ordering entirely online. call a store, tell them what you wear in other shoe sizes, etc. i cant express how gay i am for these shoes, friend. end of blog post

I didnt choose MTO when i went in NYC. I went with the comfort craftsman with rubber sole im black leather, which the store had in stock. i tried on decreasing sizes and when i found a pair that fit, i went even one size smaller just to be sure (id never gotten chelseas before and was OCD about them feeling right).

my roommate was hesitant about the rubber sole and insisted leather is "nicer" but i really put miles on shoes and whenever i get them resoled i can choose leather if i feel like it.

one thing you should note - the more expensive screwed on sole models look great, but from what i read back in the winter when i was doing research, screwed on soles are very annoying to have replaced by most shoe repair shops. i chose goodyear welted because shipping my shoes to AUS to have them resoled is out of the question for me.

if you're in aus go find a DFO
depending on what city you're in, the DFO might have an RM's outlet. when I was stuck in canberra, I must've bought 3 or 4 pairs for cheap. all functional with no structural issues, just cosmetic shit so they're 2nds.

I've bought another 4 or 5 pairs new from retail (for me and gifts) and the 2nds from the DFO don't compare all that badly compared to new.

only ever bought new pairs at a store in melbourne called "bootsnonline/stitching horse bootery". dunno if they're still a thing; once upon a time they were one of the go-to places for overseas cunts ordering rm's for way below boutique prices, tiny shop nowadays, helpful staff

NB:
after their total buyout by the great whore, lvmh, rm williams has gone down hill.
prices gone up beyond their worth imo
quality and range gone down
more and more shit made overseas
gone was the awesome MTO program, and in its place some way overpriced shit that's a shadow of its former self - seriously you could order any combination and there was like a mild premium (maybe 40 bucks?) - now it's a very limited range of shit for way more

no longer worth it
buy asap, buy cheap as you can, because under the new foreign ownership it's only going to cost more (more than they're worth desu) and quality and range will drop - this is what LVMH do, they ruin brands.

I'd be kicking myself for not ordering a bunch of non-standard combinations when I was still in oz but I discovered that, unfortunately, the RM's lasts don't fit my feet after walking differently significantly changed their shape (toes).

so much for the pairs I accumulated lol - none of that shit's comfy anymore for me which is a fucking shame as they're the best travelling boots you could own
miss my tanbark kangaroo craftsman; I had gotten those to patina just fucking right, too.

I've still got a chestnut, black, rum, sandstone, black nubuck moldering around in storage in oz.
probably should've tried to sell them before I left lol

When i was at the shop they sized me up well, 8F... I am leaning to a tighter fit because i expect they conform to my feet better... also I think I'll go for the rubber sole as leather is apparently slippery when wet plus I do heaps of walking so dont really want to deal with resoling too often

>>12504950
Cool, I'm actually in the capital at the moment studying so I'll check out the DFO when I can

What do you mean by non-standard combos? outside yearling black/chestnut craftsman? In an ideal world I would love to get a pair of kangaroo craftsman
And yeah i've been looking at forums from only a few years ago and they were complaining about the prices going up to 300 odd, they are now retailing at $545 so fuck

What soles did you go for?
>>
>>12505184
Lol not really, lots of slim chelsea boots around before slp
>>
>>12505247
I dunno how it is now, but during my tenure in that suicide-inducing city the Canberra DFO probably had the largest range (models and numbers) of Rm's outside of their factory outlet shop in Adelaide.

I left in 2014. Dunno if it's all dried up.

By non-standard I mean all the stuff you could find in the earlier pages of that on SF rmw thread (you know the one). They had more leathers, more soles, more potential combos than you could shake a stick at, and for such a price!

Wandered past a boutique in London when I was last there and saw that they had gutted the range (for men and women), and the price they charge for what they call their "bespoke" service was ridiculous (fucking lol, how dare they call that piddling excuse for what used to be their MTO program, "bespoke"? Not a day before that I was perusing John fucking Lobb St. James, Cleverly, Foster and Son - that's bespoke).

I would avoid the brass screwed soles, as awesome as they might appear. I always wanted a pair though.

Problem: the leather RMW use for soles is medium fare junk leather, ie. not worth bothering with leather soles over. If you want leather soles, you must insist on oak bark tanned shit. That is costly, time wise, to produce, so they don't do it. Mind you you have to go upper middle to upper tier men's footwear to get it at all anymore, but whatever.

Secondly, there are only 3 machines left in existence that can manage brass screwing; two of which are in the RMW factory and one is broken I think. The other works when it works, but no one living knows how to build them or fix them properly so they fiddle with it until it works again. There are periods of time when they suspend brass screwed sole production and resolves - this is when the machine is fucked.

If it breaks for good, you can be sure as shit that the new LVMH overlords would not spend the money to try to have it repaired; they'd sell it for scrap.
>>
>>12505507
So there's an issue of potential longevity with these things. I prefer a sure thing, and if the company hadn't gone the sell-out to conglomerate route, perhaps I could advocate this neat and unique sole type that provides a very sleek and light boot, almost effeminate perhaps. As it stands, with leather soles that last not very long at all (oak bark lasts significantly longer under similar wear and conditions) I do not recommend.

Stick to the standard composite/rubber sole. It's sleek enough for dress or casual and it'll last 6 years rather than six months.

The few pairs of leather soled rm's I did buy for myself or others I had topied (had a cobbler glue a rubber sole protector on - when the thin rubber wears, it's peeled off and replaced, better to do this than resole as goodyearwelted footwear had only so many resoles and rewelts in them before they fail).

Another quality issue I have is that they seem to have done away with the full leather insoles in lieu of this bullshit "comfort insole". It makes the boots like a sneaker almost, for a while, but like all synthetic insoles it becomes suckier over time and after a year or two loses it's cushion and becomes almost as hard as leather, but not as comfy, as the leather moulds to the shape of your foot, bringing its own kind of comfort. A traditional full leather insole is the long time standard for a reason. All the traditional makers still use it. It is superior for something that is to last for many years. You don't fuck with the insole of a shoe; it's integral and when that fails the thing is fucked.
>>
>>12505510
Last tip: I recommend kangaroo over cow (yearling) because roo's aren't farmed. If they aren't farmed, they aren't injected with growth hormones to swell them up in 6months. This makes for shitty leather (compared to the past).

Rm's standard yearling may be better than junk from lesser brands, but it still suffers from this systemic, industry wide problem. Basically, I only trust a the few decent european tanneries for fine calf leather anymore. My relatives have rm's that are over 20 years old, and they fare better than the new ones I bought for them, with the same amount of meticulous care. Leather just isn't up to scratch anymore, bit that's a tannery problem, and it's everywhere now - big bucks for decent shit.

The manger of the DFO used to tell me (I was there a lot, trying shit on) about how the leather for the soles and uppers has become progressively shit in the past couple of years.

Maybe LVMH gets them from a different source nowadays? I doubt it though.

A boot I would've wanted to buy before leaving oz but held off because of last fitting issues is:
>Dark tan kangaroo
>Blaxland (leather insole) (brass screw in an ideal world)
>composite rubber soles
>(maybe) bone elastics

Alas, it was not meant to be, and my feet are sufficiently fucked that it seems only real bespoke will satisfy me, hence my visit to St. James and Jermyn Street amidst other places.

Shame, as Rm's really were super. They were an absolute fucking bargain before, and if you went to a DFO? Amazing value (550 now? lmao), dependable, comfy and versatile: if you were an antipodean you could get away with wearing them with a suit to with chinos or jeans.

Buy whatever you're gonna buy now, before LVMH bumps up the price even further. Don't buy leather soles, and if you like the look and feel, go Roo
