As for the gross-factor, it's just a matter of getting used to it. Sorta like having sex with a girl who has pubic hair. It's a natural thing that feels weird at first, but becomes normal in time.
Best advice I can give is break the habit of licking your lips or stroking them if that's one of the reasons. Keeping it trimmed down to stubble or just shave your upper lip every day if you hate it that much.
Mustaches aren't that important in enhancing your looks. If you don't like it, don't keep it.

But it'll just grow back in uneven patches like it always does. And then the question is how do I maintain the stubble without having to completely shave it off and start from zero after it reaches a certain point
