If you want recs, provide as many criteria as possible: including sex, price range, seasons/weather, occasions, other frags/notes/accords you like/dislike, special conditions i.e. can easily be found in mall department stores, other ephemera i.e. personal style/aura you want to project, etc...

Received a sample of Rive Gauche (can) in a trade with Kouros Guy. Quality barbershop scent, maybe the best I've tried. Would be amazed if Azzaro pH comes close to the YSL in terms of quality.
>>
>>12461381
>>12461384
Sup BF. Isn't RGpH great? It's a performance monster too. I rarely do more than two sprays of that stuff. Odd that I like it so much, because I generally do not care for anise/licorice as a note, which explains the fact that I cannot stand Azzaro pH. It's just so shrill and sharp to me. It's very well reviewed, so I'm sure I'm in the minority, but ecch.

Why is it that i get tired of every scent (so far around 100) to the point that i can't stand wearing anything else than CK One? Is CK One the goat scent? I know it's cheap and has longevity issues, but still there's something to it i can't explain.
>>
>>12461428
You should have experienced CK One in the 90's. It might have been GOAT if not for reformulation, but the same can be said of so many once-great scents lost to corporate greed and the nanny state.

i'm a beginner to fragrances - i've been doing a lot of reading with the help of >>12461343 but i can't seem to find anything that really suits me.

i'm looking for something masculine but also something for men under 30 - i am fascinated by the fragrances that take you to another world like Sel Marin or L`Air du Desert Marocain. i prefer the idea of a niche fragrance that tells a story. i really like cedar and leather as well as labdanum. i prefer a fragrance that's present but subtle. are there any daily use fragrances for the spring/summer i can wear for business formal or casual events?

think of the scent i'm looking for as the equivalent of an interesting jacquard weave tie that ties together any good casual or formal outfit

while i am not afraid of price, i am afraid of blind buys and getting ripped off. what's a good way to buy samples and bottles online without buying something fake or tampered?

thanks

Yes, there are people who have tried to recreate perfumes that were documented in Egyptian tombs, with most of the focus on Cleopatra. I'm sure there are middle eastern houses that specialize in traditional oils, but it's not something I've researched.

Will the inevitable Sauvage flanker actually smell like all the great visuals they attach to it? From the Depp commercial to the "making of" film, to today's cruise collection. It's all been about the desert and seeking and escaping and has this boho wandering existentialism vibe to it... but I don't get anything like that from Sauvage. But I want something precisely like that. I know there are things like bois d'ascese and laddm and canyon dreams and many others that vein... but I'm hoping the flanker brings something surprising and new to the table. I think Fahrenheit actually fits this imagery better than Sauvage does. Opinions, thoughts, etc welcome.

I wish Sauvage smelled like this video:

>>12462644 here. i am going to start out with trying samples of pic related. i will be looking forward to trying sel marin in my casual clothes - think jeans and shirts during the summer. in regards to my business formal or casual i had in mind ambre 114 and i am hoping to discover it is summer appropriate. i figure 1740 would be appropriate in intimately swanky settings, private or public. desert marocain seems very interesting to me.

I love the in-depth infographic this general always has, but it always leaves me overwhelmed rather than more informed.

Why isn't there like a top 5 most recommended fragrances for each season or something similar?

And on that note, would something like Dior Homme be too much for summer?

Thanks friendo. I'll check it out.
>>
>>12462280

My favourites are probably the Armani Prive Rose D'Arabie and Gucci Pour Homme II. Dior Homme is amazing as well.

Eau Tres Fraiche is pretty odd, one would think it's way lighter but I feel it projects even more than its other Terre counterparts.

>>12462401

No problem. I live in Finland, and we don't really have any niche houses here, so I've only bought designer frags I can try on.

The Ferragamo is a seriously nice frag. It reminds me very much of Bleu De Chanel, but some notes play a bit differently and it doesn't feel so common.

>>12462434

Edition Blanche is a very beautiful, luxurious scent. When I dress up in the summertime, it's my go-to scent. It's so light, the creamy lemon smells awesome, and the spices add some wonderful kick at the bottom. It doesn't last all that long, but it's a small price to pay.

Thoughts on these Dior Homme flankers?
Specifically for an everyday spring/summer scent.

Also how do they comapare to the Chanel Allure line?
>>
>>12464051
Huge fan of Dior Homme Eau. Smells like the original Dior Homme but without the leathery chocolate accord and with some aquatic freshness in the background instead. It can be pretty heavy if you spray too much because it will literally last forever if you don't wash it off. I'd say it's more for cooler spring days and evenings, although it does work pretty well in the heat as well if you only go 1-2 sprays.

>>12463120
I know I'm a pleb but I fucking love Sauvage too. I've always been craving a EDT version of the legendary Axe Touch showergel thats been discontinued and Sauvage comes the closest to anything I've ever smelled. That fruity opening leading way into the barbershop peppery ambroxan is so nice, I've literally just been spraying it on right after showering. It does give some crazy olfactory fatigue though. I can spray it on my wrist, and then 16 hours later I won't be able to smell it at all but other people who haven't been around me can, and when I start to wash off my wrists I get hints of that Axe Touch vibe from the opening again. It quickly became my favorite fresh sporty scent. And I do think it smells like that video.

Yes, it has great performance but I only really like it in the fall. You might not think that "peppery lavender" works but its does and really well.

I'm not someone who really gets many, if any, compliments on fragrances I wear, even when I wear something like Sauvage, AdG Profumo, or Chanel AHSEE. But Prada LRE is so far the only frag of mine that has gotten me an unsolicited compliment from a total stranger.

Pick one, friendo. You really need to start using a trip, your "designer versus niche" autism is such an embarrassingly obvious case of confirmation bias.

See pic related from >>12461343 for the definition of "niche". There is exactly one place in Los Angeles where I can go to purchase Bois d'Argent. In most parts of the US, the Collection is simply not available at retail and must be ordered. The product itself is hardly Sauvage or Fahrenheit, regardless of the name on the label.

nothing but it will cost a bit of money for trial and error purposes. lots of wasted materials. i am thinking of just taking classes instead. clay sculpting is the easier aspect to me though, i might not need classes for that. but i would also need enough materials and room to make my own foundry without using any modern methods or tools. so i would have to constantly fan the furnace, for instance. a lot of work for 1 person
>>
>>12465433
the furnace is the most important aspect of the project -- if i make one i would also use it as a foundry for casting metals into moulds using the lost wax process
>>
>>12465437
i also considered making the tools needed myself as well which would require some level of smithing and leather working. this is primarily where my problem comes in -- i would have to buy most of the raw materials i need when i would prefer to just go out and hunt or mine it all myself

>>
>>12465506
while the ingredients may be basic in terms of modern fragrances, i wonder how their creation and storage have an affect. maybe it'll just smell better to me because i made it. they're also a relatively pure connection to the past and the people who lived in those times which i find fascinating

BdC is my favorite of the three but I feel like it'd be drowned out by others in a clubbing environment. Sauvage would work pretty well. Personally I hate it but I have gotten compliments on it and it does project better than the three. It's getting to generic douchebag levels nowadays. Versace Dylan Blue is very nice imo.

Abdul Karim Al Faransi, his private collection is lowkey groundbreaking but he unfortunately doesn't get recognition on account of the Muslim name.
Other one that comes to mind is AL Muhib, his California Sunrise does Aventus better than the current Aventus formulations.
>>
What's the deal with the "private collection" lines from almost every major house? Like if they are so good why are they not the main collection ot it's just the price making peaople believe it's something better? Or are the ingredients actually better quality?

Don't buy Bleu de Chanel. Judging by the batch code I have a bittle from 2016 and it smells amazing but performance-wise it's a waste of money.
Recently someone at work literally asked me why I'm not wearing anything after I've been using it for about a week. Even on clothes you can barely smell it after 2-3 hours.
>>
>>12470087
I'm talking about EdT so maybe EdP would be better in this regard.
>>
>>12470092
Different dude here, but I just bought a bottle of the EDP at duty free a month ago when I was on vacation, and it's basically a skin scent on me after 2 hours, tops. After even an hour, all the citrus notes are completely gone and I basically just get a woody, ambery scent.

I'm pretty disappointed with it desu, smells very nice initially, buts gone way too fast.
>>
>>12470194
Yeah, the only upside I noticed is that when I'm at the gym a start to smell it again after only a couple of minutes on a treadmill even if it's late afternoon and I sprayed in the morning. What's interesting is that the opning notes are coming back as well not just the drydown.

I'm gonn put it away for a month and try again when it;s hot and Im sweating more cause right now it's as you said - gone after 2 hours.
>>
>>12470087
I own a 5oz bottle of the EdT with a batch code from 2015. It lasts for eight hours easily, confirmed by coworkers and friends. I don't get you EdPfags and your issues. EdT for life.

>>
>>12470309
I mean, it's a fashion house. They can afford to do whatever, but that event wasn't explicitly fragrance related. The "sauvage" theme seems like something they're pushing out and marketing beyond the fragrance line.

Is Dior Homme EDT fine for summer? I really like the smell of it but I'm wondering if it'll be too much for summer when I start sweating outside.

Mini-reviews ahead:

DH: Surprised at the performance of this. Very safe date/work scent because of the focus on cocoa. My dislike of this is more personal than there being an objective flaw with the fragrance; I just don't want to smell like cocoa. It is definitely wearable in almost any situation that isn't in extreme heat. The iris/leather are easily distinguishable if you focus on the scent but in passing the cocoa is what most people seem to get.

DHI: I hated this when I first tried it, but after several more wearings I realized it's because I oversprayed. The "makeup" vibe in DHI is directly proportional to how much you apply it. This leads to a bit of a paradox with the scent: you want it to grab people, but if it grabs people it likely means you've sprayed too much and it's cloying. As opposed to something like La Nuit which doesn't perform as much but you can literally do 20+ sprays and still offend fewer people. DHI is a masterpiece if applied with restraint, and I find it is one of the best "under the clothes" fragrances. Spraying on exposed skin is risky because of just how powerful it is, but if you're willing to use the scent only for intimate situations, it's second to none.

DHP: I get what people mean when they say this works best with a suit, but I think people drastically overstate how limited its purposes are. I think this can be used in almost any situation as long as you adjust the number of sprays accordingly. The reason for this is that, unlike something like Chergui or Tobacco Vanille, there isn't a cloying sweetness that becomes exaggerated in warmer weather. Also, unlike Tuscan Leather or one of the Amouages, this is a very smooth scent despite being a powerhouse. This means it's much safer to spray on exposed skin than DHI. Out of all the frags here, this is the one I've gotten the most unsolicited compliments from. This works in any situation except the most casual, warm days imo.
>>
>>12470881

Valentino Uomo Intense: This is about 75% similar to DHI. However, the addition of vanilla serves to offset the influence of iris and make this much safer to wear. If I smelled this blind, I would say this is a vanilla-based fragrance as opposed to an iris one, even though its composition is so similar to DHI. That 25% difference drastically changes the impression you get. This means it's safer to spray on exposed skin, but I would still be cautious because it is gourmand-ish. Probably not safe to "grab" people with except in very cold weather. Performance is good but less longevity and projection than DHI. To be honest, I kind of feel this fragrance is superfluous to DHI, because even though they do smell different, if you're in a situation where you could wear this, DHI would also be appropriate and it smells more unique/seductive if applied responsibly. The only time I think this has an edge is if you're trying to get noticed by a girl from a distance.

Overall, DHP is definitely my favorite here, and I think it is the most versatile/easy for a man to wear, despite most reviewers saying the opposite. It is firmly masculine and because of that has the most consistently positive reactions from girls. It has the best performance by far, and it is a safe scent to grab people with, meaning you can actually use it the way it was intended to be used (to be smelled by other people more than a foot away). Any of these fragrances works in cold weather, and none of them are bad. The only difference is how unique they are comparatively, and how frequently they can be worn.

Yeah, nowadays you're better off treating EDPs as flankers instead of just stronger versions of EDT and also shouldn't expect something to underperform just because it's an EDT. >Yeah, nowadays you're better off treating EDPs as flankers instead of just stronger versions of EDT and also shouldn't expect something to underperform just because it's an EDT.

Also better off sampling.

Some EDT's are weak as shit while intense flankers and EDP's are only marginally better, like pic related.

In my experience, anything focused on citrus (like dior eau sauvage and armani eph) and other fruits, like pic related again, won't last long no matter what kind of skin you have.

Greens and anything heavy on spices, tonka bean, and lavender will have some decent, if not beastly, longevity.

The original is just a sharp vetiver frag that lasts a good while.

I used to buy this but production stopped since Luna Rossa Carbon is taking over. I like it quite a lot, so it would be nice to get some recomendations. Before LRE, I used to get L'homme.

I quite like that kind of scent, as they are pretty similar. What is it called? Something without patchouli please. The fragrance also does not stick to me for long, what am I doing wrong? I don't get tobacco stinkiness either, can it be because of me?
>>
>>12474471
Totally. It's not a prominent note at all, but it's there in the background. It's mainly a "very close to Le Male, but actually better imo" powdery vanilla/lavender.
>>
>>12474596
I'm with you. Fuck vetiver. I'm okay with it's inclusion in a fragrance if it's blended in imperceptibly and used to achieve an effect. But I will chuck a fragrance I otherwise love if I wake up the next day and the remaining skin scent is straight vetiver. And anything that's sharp vetiver from the top goes straight into the trash.

Mugler Pure Havane.

Parfumerie de Marly Herod if you want to go niche and have a decent budget.

Roja Enigma if fuck it, you're getting married, you need something fancy, and don't care about dropping 500.00.

Also Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, of course, but I find it a bit boring and overpriced for what it is.
>>
>>12474643
I now just got this and I'm digging it a lot. The smell up close is kinda whatever almost sickening soapy/spicy but the sillage is phenomenal... and it lasted longer than a lot of my frags.

Didn't know it stopped, you can get it at Sephora for 70 bucks (but I chose notino for that sick shipping time)
>>
>>12474505
The only real difference between that and "vintage" is the design of the bottle. The juice has remained relatively the same.
I have the original Jazz in the original plastic splash bottle which has to be close to 30 years old if not more and its still fine, albeit the top notes are weaker

opinions on armani cedre? I tested it at Myer and I thought it was really nice, fairly sophisticated. Should I cop?

Thanks compadre, gonna jump on it. If for some reason I don't care for it or, worst case scenario, it doesn't work well on my skin, I can always resell since it's a slightly used bottle anyway.

Try to cop a good sized sample to wear it for a couple days.

The Eau Pour Homme line is notorious for top notch scents that perform like shit.

Whatever, I would take BdC with its shitty performance over Suavage any day.
And I'm not even trying to be contrarian but I seriously don't get it. I don't like 95% of frags I sample but I can see why others might like them but with Sauvage it's like a fucking giant joke that I'm not in on. I would rather just wear Axe and I'm typing this as someone who when deciding between what I like and what's "crowd pleasing" leans heavily towards the latter

Bruh, you keep throwing around "I" like it matters.

It's not a frag for men. It's a frag for women, but not for women to wear.

Same with pic related.

When she wants you to wear it, you're a Ken doll.

I got this set. It's a good price for a usable amount of sauce. The trouble is I'm pretty sure you won't like all of them. And then you're stuck with a 5ml sample you don't want and overpaid for.

Although if you can pawn them off on friends as a gift, that's a win.

You should know they're all more traditional/barbershop/"soapy" type perfumes. They have a more floral scent and wear lighter than most new perfumes. They're inoffensive to the point of bland, but they're not bad.

If you're young and you like flashy scents normally i doubt this is for you.

>i will be looking forward to trying sel marin

This was an odd duck for me. It's exactly what it's described as. It smells like standing on the ocean; salty, a slight unpleasant tone of seaweeds overtaken by a fresh citrusy scent.

But while it's perfect at capturing that sense of being near the ocean I just don't see how that translates into something you'd wanna wear. It's more of a room type scent when you want to evoke that feeling of being at the beach. Smelling like the ocean was just odd. Reactions were more a confused "yeah it really does smell like that" than "wow that smells great".

I bought Volume 2 at Primark for $8, the frag is pretty good but it has no staying power. I doubt anybody's tried it, but can you rec me something with similar notes:
>Blood Mandarin
>Peppermint
>Cinnamon Bark
>Tonka bean
>White Wood
>Amber ketal

I have my good days and bad days, but I certainly am unobservant and didn't follow the chain back far enough to get your comment. I'm not the same guy you were talking to about LL btw, just noticed the bottle every month comment and am fascinated by oversprayers...

Thinking of sampling Le Male and Wonderwood for a casual and night out scent for the colder weather. Anything else I should try? I'm 24 and am willing to spend up to £60 for a large 100ml bottle, though I'd have to love a fragrance to spend that much...

Yes, blind bought it. I don't know if it's just me, but I missed out on the rancid smell completely, it lasts about ten seconds and then a citrus bomb drives it out. I would say that you should spray it about 10 times outside in your garden or something when you first buy it though, it has an absolutely disgusting first few sprays, like a gas station.

You've obviously never sampled either of them then
>hurr durr but they share similar notes
>2017
>believing the notes listed are what you actually smell
Notes breakdowns are just a way for perfumers to colloquialize the different chemicals they use to formulate fragrances. If they were to tell us exactly what goes into a frag, no one other then chemists and molecular biologists would understand it.
>>
>>12478097
I've always wondered how they decide which notes to list and which ingredients to leave out entirely.

I've been using Spicebomb for fall and winter and it worked really well for me. Always got compliments with it on.

Now I'm looking for a spring/summer scent that might be a complimentary opposite for it. I tried Spicebomb Fresh and it's just not nearly as good as regular Spicebomb and what I had hoped it would be.

Anyone have anything that might fit what I'm thinking? I don't even know what I'm thinking though desu; I'm new to this whole thing.

When you buy a fragrance new, it comes in a box. I wouldn't say it's more important than the bottle, but it's what you see on a store shelf.
