For practical military purposes. Old school military uniforms and equipment were "olive drab" in color because - camouflage. Blend in with the background, ya know. (if ya inna desert you had desert khaki). It's all carried forward into the psuedo-military style for civilian fashion. Add a few rando patches and you're good to go.
