I'm an older student as well and get most of my stuff from nordstrom rack, jcrew, br, marshalls etc. I mostly try to wear things like casual slacks (often sold as "5 pocket pants") or chinos, and jeans. For tops I like to do something more than just a t shirt, so like I'll wear henleys with a t shirt underneath, I have a heavy knit thermal I love, sweaters, polos. I do wear some button downs, but I try to keep them on the informal side so I have a couple large pattern plaids that I like. So basically jcrew core.
