wash hair twice a week, also only shampoo your roots and scalp (massage to stimulate growth) and put conditioner on your length/tips. Your scalp is the greasiest, just let the shampoo slide down through your length. Doing a hot oil treatment once a month or so is also good for your hair

Know when you need a maintenance cut. If you're not sure, make friends with a decent hairdresser (not your local chop shop), or at least a model with good hair.

Experiment with not doing anything to your hair (no product, no poo) at least once. It'll help teach you your hair cycle, so you know how to make it look best at each day within that cycle.

On that topic, don't wash your hair so much. You don't need to go no poo, but no one needs to be washing their hair more than once a week outside of peak summer.

Sea salt spray is good for styling, but bad for your hair's health. Don't overdo it, and make sure you're balancing it out with some leave in conditioner, and a treatment every few washes.

When it comes to which specific products to use, I find that hairdressers are surprisingly bad at recommendations. Listen to what they have to say, but don't necessarily buy the shit they're pushing. I've been sold some extremely average products in the past because it worked well for someone else's hair.

With regards to pulling the bun tight, just be careful about the tension on your scalp. It should be tight towards the back, near the tie, but not at the roots. Constant pulling of the scalp will cause your hair to thin, and, eventually, your hairline to recede.

actually here is something that is like the "before." Just a layer of frizz over my hair anytime it was up... didn't look as bad when I wore it down so I just wore it down like 6 days a week. The difference in this chick's hair is what I mean though. Nasty frizz before, "normal" hair after.
